The easiest way to start learning Logo is to make the turtle move, use REPEAT to simplify a drawing, and then turn the repeated instructions into a procedure. The free FMSLogo “Where to Start” guide teaches that progression with a square. For a browser-based option, Logo Trail describes a workspace where guests can enter commands and see drawings without logging in. Terrapin Logo’s Learning Center is useful alongside either one as a command reference with examples and practice prompts.

Start with a turtle, then learn repetition and procedures

FMSLogo’s “Where to Start” guide introduces Logo through visible results. You begin by entering commands that move the turtle forward and turn it, then build toward shorter, reusable instructions.

  1. Enter forward and turn commands to draw the sides of a square.
  2. Replace the repeated commands with REPEAT 4 [FD 100 RT 90]. The turtle repeats the forward-and-turn instructions four times.
  3. Define a SQUARE procedure so you can call the drawing again by name rather than re-entering its instructions.

This one exercise connects three useful ideas: a sequence of instructions, a loop that repeats them, and a procedure that gives a set of instructions a reusable name. The guide is for FMSLogo, so use its directions in that implementation rather than assuming every Logo environment has identical commands or behavior.

Use a command reference to keep exploring

Terrapin Logo’s Learning Center is a guided tour of commonly used commands. Its entries pair descriptions with examples and things to try, making it helpful when you want to understand a command or practice an idea rather than follow one continuous first lesson.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Terrapin says the Logo programming language includes over 600 commands. Its Learning Center focuses on common commands, not every advanced feature; the site points readers to its full Logo Manual for broader coverage. When consulting any manual, check which implementation it describes. For example, the Berkeley Logo manual available through Debian Sources documents UCBLogo 6.2.5-1, not every version or Logo environment.

Try Logo in a browser if you want to avoid installation

Logo Trail describes a browser workspace for entering simple Logo commands and seeing turtle drawings. It says guest drawing does not require an account, which can be convenient if you want to try the basic idea before installing a program. Its feature and privacy descriptions may change, so check the site’s current terms and details before relying on them.

Know which Terrapin materials are free and which require a license

Terrapin’s Getting Started page distinguishes its learning materials by purpose. Logo Works: Lessons in Logo is described as a step-by-step digital book covering common graphics commands, new commands, and variables. The page says it is available with a Terrapin Logo license, so it should not be treated as a universally free tutorial. 101+ Ideas for Logo offers project ideas rather than teaching programming from scratch, and is also described as available with a Terrapin Logo license.
