1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo retain a skill without brain stimulation, build practice around delayed, unaided checks—not just a session that feels fluent. Interleave task variations when it suits the learner and setting, use mental rehearsal as a supplement, and use feedback to identify errors before trying the skill without prompts. These methods are not equally proven for every kind of skill: much of the direct evidence concerns motor and procedural tasks, and the best schedule depends on what you are learning.
Measure retention, not how practice felt
Doing well at the end of a session does not establish that a skill will last. Performance can improve temporarily through repetition, cues, or a recent warm-up. A delayed attempt at the target skill, without intensive review immediately beforehand, is a more useful check of what remains.
- Define the target. Choose an observable outcome, such as completing a procedure accurately, playing a passage at a specified tempo, or performing a movement with consistent form.
- Record a starting benchmark. Note the conditions and measure that matter. If speed and accuracy can trade off, track both rather than treating faster performance as improvement by itself.
- Practice, then wait. After a meaningful interval without intensive practice, repeat the same task under comparable conditions. Avoid a long warm-up that effectively turns the check into another practice session.
- Use the result to adjust. If accuracy has fallen, return to the weak components; if performance is intact, test a variation or a more realistic setting.
A 2016 review of motor-learning principles in physiotherapy and medical education cautioned against treating immediate post-acquisition performance as proof of learning. A 2025 meta-analysis of procedural skills also noted that separating retained ability from relearning is a measurement challenge. BMC Medical Education review (2016); Psychological Bulletin review (2025).
Interleave variations when the task and learner fit
Blocked practice means repeating one task or variation several times before switching. Interleaved practice mixes different tasks or variations, requiring the learner to choose and retrieve the appropriate action more often. That added difficulty can make practice feel less smooth, so judge it by delayed performance rather than by how polished the session looks.

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis included 54 studies and found a medium beneficial pooled effect of high contextual interference overall. Its results varied by setting and age: random practice benefited retention in laboratory settings, while the effect in applied settings was almost negligible. The pooled effect was large for older adults, medium for adults, and negligible and statistically insignificant for young participants. Those differences do not support a rule that every learner should always practice randomly. See the 2024 meta-analysis.
- Try interleaving when the goal is to distinguish among related tasks or perform flexibly, and when the learner already has enough familiarity to attempt each variation.
- Keep practice more blocked at first if switching among variations prevents a beginner from understanding the basic action. Then introduce mixing and check whether delayed performance improves.
- Compare fairly. Use the same delayed test for blocked and interleaved practice, and track errors as well as speed. Do not infer retention from immediate fluency alone.
Use mental rehearsal as a supplement
Mental practice means rehearsing an action cognitively without physically performing the movement. It can be a useful adjunct when physical repetitions are limited, particularly for procedural learning, but it is not established as a replacement for hands-on practice or as a guarantee of long-term retention across skill types.

A 2016 review of 15 randomized trials involving 695 participants found an improvement in post-acquisition performance with mental practice (standardized mean difference 0.43; 95% confidence interval 0.01 to 0.85). The authors judged every included study to have a high risk of bias, and the result concerns post-acquisition performance rather than a clean demonstration of durable retention. Review details.
Use feedback to reveal errors, then test without it
Augmented feedback is information from an external source, added to the learner’s own sensory feedback. It might indicate whether a movement reached a target or where a procedural step went wrong. A practical use is to focus feedback on a specific error or outcome, then attempt the skill without continuous cues so the delayed check reflects what the learner can do independently.

A 2022 review of gross-motor and sport-specific skills in healthy adults included 24 studies and 895 participants. Most studies reported improved learning, but findings on the best feedback frequency, timing, and duration conflicted; retention-test timing and methods also varied. Eighteen studies were at high risk of bias and six raised some concerns. The evidence does not establish a universal feedback schedule or show that constant prompts are best. Read the 2022 review.
Space practice, but do not assume one universal refresher interval
Spacing practice over time and retrieving information from memory are well-supported learning strategies across domains. However, evidence about academic grades or declarative knowledge is not automatically direct evidence about retaining a physical or procedural skill. A 2024 systematic review in health-professions education covered 56 eligible articles and 63 experiments; 43 experiments found significant benefits of distributed practice and/or retrieval practice over comparison conditions, with academic grades as the outcome. See the health-professions education review. A broader account of spacing and retrieval practice is available in Nature Reviews Psychology.

For procedural skills, a 2025 meta-analytic review analyzed 1,344 effect sizes from 457 reports and estimated that half of initial acquisition gains were lost after about 6.5 months for accuracy measures, 13 months for speed measures, and 11 months for mixed measures. These are pooled estimates, not individual deadlines. Decay varied with task type and complexity, intermittent practice, instructions, and the outcome measured. Use them as a reason to schedule occasional checks, not as a timetable that applies to every skill. Read the 2025 review.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to combine the methods
- Set a measurable target and record a baseline for the skill you actually want to retain.
- Practice the basics enough to perform them, then consider mixing related variations if flexible selection is part of the goal.
- Use targeted feedback to notice an error; include some attempts without prompts.
- When physical practice is unavailable, mentally rehearse the action as a supplement rather than treating it as equivalent to performing it.
- After a meaningful gap, repeat the target task without intensive warm-up. Use that delayed result—not session smoothness—to choose what to practice next.
This approach is a practical framework, not a validated universal schedule. The evidence is strongest for specific motor and procedural contexts, and a music, workplace, or cognitive skill may need a task-specific test and practice design.
