To use Evernote on iPhone, create a note with the green New note button, add text or other content, and use search to find it later. You can also scan paper with the camera, attach files, and download specific notes or notebooks for offline access.
Install Evernote and sign in
Install Evernote from the App Store and sign in with the account you use on your other devices. Evernote’s installation guidance says using Evernote on more than two devices requires a paid subscription. Check your current account plan if you need to use the app on several devices, since account rules can change.
Create, organize, and find a note
Create a note
- Tap the green New note button.
- Add a title and enter your content.
- Choose a notebook if you do not want to use the default notebook.
Evernote saves a new note to the default notebook unless you select another one. Notes can include text, checklists, bulleted or numbered lists, images, audio recordings, and files. See Evernote’s note-creation guidance for its current mobile workflow.

Use search from the Create page or above the note list. If a note is hard to find, try a distinctive word from its title or content, or browse the notebook where you saved it.

Find the app’s other sections
The mobile navigation can include Create, Notes, Notebooks, Shortcuts, Tasks, Calendar, Tags, Shared, Templates, Spaces, widgets, and More. To choose what appears, open your profile menu and go to Settings > Navigation > Customize navigation. Labels and available sections may change as Evernote updates the app.
Scan a document or handwritten note
Capture directly in Evernote
- From the homepage, tap the Camera icon.
- Choose Photo or Auto.
- For Auto, hold the iPhone steadily above the paper and keep its edges visible in the frame.
- Review the capture and save it to Evernote.
Evernote says the camera can detect, focus on, and capture a document in Auto mode, and that saved printed or handwritten text can be searchable. This is useful for items such as receipts, business cards, notes, manuals, and whiteboards. Consult Evernote’s camera instructions if the controls differ on your version.

Use Scannable for review and sharing
Evernote’s separate iOS Scannable workflow lets you point the camera at paper, review and edit the scan, approve it, then save it to Camera Roll or Evernote, send it, or share it with another app. Its Scannable guide says single-page scans default to images and multipage scans to PDFs. Choose the in-app camera for a direct Evernote capture; choose Scannable when you want its review and export options. The available guidance does not establish that either workflow scans faster or produces better results.
Attach a file to a note
- Open an existing note or create one, then enter edit mode.
- Tap the blue plus sign above the keyboard.
- Select Attachment and choose the file.
The file must fit within the note-size limit for your account. Evernote’s attachment instructions provide the current steps; check your account’s limit if an upload is rejected.

Make notes available offline
A temporary mobile cache may contain note titles, tags, short excerpts, and system data without storing the full note. Download the specific content you need before you lose connectivity.
- Open the note or notebook.
- Tap the three-dot More Options menu.
- Switch on Available offline.
- Check the download status and wait for it to finish before relying on offline access.
Offline edits sync after the iPhone reconnects. Downloads use device storage, and you can remove them under Account > Settings > Offline. See Evernote’s offline-access instructions for the current controls.

Understand syncing and refreshes
Evernote states: “Evernote automatically saves and syncs your notes across all connected devices.” Automatic syncing depends on the devices being connected; it is not a substitute for downloading notes you need offline.
