The most useful keyboard shortcuts to learn first are copy, cut, paste, undo, and find. From there, add save, print, select all, insert link, and text-selection commands for the apps you use most. Shortcuts vary by operating system, application, browser, and keyboard layout, so treat the combinations below as a starting point and check the app’s own shortcut reference.
Essential keyboard shortcuts to learn first
These common editing commands are a manageable starting set. “Windows / ChromeOS” shows the usual Ctrl-based pattern; macOS uses Command. Check the specific app when a shortcut does not behave as expected.

Select all, basic text movement, and text selection are also useful once the first five commands feel familiar. Their exact combinations can depend on the app and platform; use the app’s reference rather than assuming one pattern applies everywhere.
How Ctrl and Command differ
On Windows and ChromeOS, many familiar commands use Ctrl. On a Mac, the corresponding common editing commands generally use Command. macOS also uses Option and Control as modifier keys, each with its own role; the keys are not interchangeable in every shortcut. If you connect a Windows keyboard to a Mac, Apple documents keyboard substitutions: Alt corresponds to Option, while Ctrl or the Windows-logo key corresponds to Command under the stated conventions. Shortcuts in Google Docs and Microsoft Word
Google Docs
Google provides a keyboard-shortcut list within Docs: press Ctrl+/ on Windows or ChromeOS, or Command+/ on Mac. The list is a convenient way to verify commands in context. Microsoft Word for the web
Word for the web publishes separate shortcut tables for Windows and Mac. Check the table for your platform instead of assuming a shortcut from another application will carry over. Microsoft Word for the web keyboard shortcuts
Find shortcuts when you do not know them
Use the app’s own reference
For Google Docs, Ctrl+/ or Command+/ opens the shortcut list. For Word for the web, consult Microsoft’s separate Windows and Mac tables. An application-specific reference is especially useful for commands such as redo, which may not use the same combination everywhere.

Use PowerToys Shortcut Guide on Windows
Microsoft PowerToys includes Shortcut Guide, which can show shortcuts for the foreground app. Its default activation is Win+Shift+?. Press Ctrl+F to move focus to the guide’s search box. The utility includes built-in manifests for Windows, Microsoft 365, browsers, communication tools, developer tools, and creative apps; Microsoft notes that the supported-app set can change between PowerToys releases. A simple way to build the habit
- Pick one environment: start with the operating system and main app you use most, such as Windows with Word or Mac with Google Docs.
- Practice five editing commands: copy, cut, paste, undo, and find. Use them in ordinary tasks until you reach for them naturally.
- Add commands as you need them: next try save, print, select all, insert link, or text movement and selection.

- Verify unfamiliar commands: browser, app version, language, and keyboard layout can affect behavior. Confirm the combination in the app rather than relying on a memorized list from another program.
Keyboard shortcuts and accessibility

Google also documents keyboard navigation among the menu bar, side panel, and main landmarks in Docs, Sheets, and Slides, with different combinations for macOS and Windows/ChromeOS.
