ESPN’s U.S. 4K HDR rollout is real, but a 4K HDR badge in the ESPN app does not prove a Google TV is receiving smooth 4K HDR video. In an early, anecdotal report, a TCL Google TV owner saw the labels but said HDR did not activate and playback looked choppy. That report does not establish how common the problem is, which Google TV models are affected, or what causes it.
What the Google TV reports actually say
Android Authority reported on October 6, 2026, that Google TV users were seeing 4K HDR labels in ESPN and relayed complaints about choppy playback and HDR not triggering. The report cites Reddit posts, not an independent test of Google TV devices.
In the Reddit discussion, one TCL television owner said an ESPN app update added 4K HDR program badges, but the TV did not indicate that HDR had activated. The user described the image as choppy. Another participant reported similarly poor playback. These are individual observations, not a representative survey or a published failure rate.
One commenter said HDR activated on selected ESPN content on their Roku devices. That is also an anecdote: it does not establish that Roku works better overall or provide a guaranteed fix for Google TV.

ESPN’s rollout is underway, but device support is not uniform evidence of 4K HDR
On September 8, 2026, ESPN Communications announced that ESPN and ESPN2 would begin rolling out 4K HDR in the United States that week. The announced programming included ESPN productions of Monday Night Football, NBA and NHL coverage, selected college football and US Open tennis events, and marquee events such as Super Bowl LXI.
ESPN said iOS and tvOS would support the experience first, with additional connected-TV platforms to follow during the fall. It also described distribution through traditional and digital pay-TV providers and on Disney+ in the United States for ESPN Unlimited subscribers. The announcement describes a broad rollout, not confirmation that every Google TV model has working 4K HDR.

ESPN described coordinated investment across the signal chain and said its architecture was built in partnership with Evertz. In ESPN Communications’ words: “The new architecture, built in partnership with Evertz’s Mediator/Overture/Magnum and VUE products, is IP-based and endpoint agnostic.” An endpoint-agnostic architecture does not by itself confirm that a particular device, app version, event, and account are delivering HDR correctly.
ESPN’s device support page, updated October 5, 2026, lists Android TV devices and Roku among TV-connected platforms. That general listing does not certify 4K HDR on a specific Google TV television or streaming device. ESPN also says access to all streaming content requires a current subscription with an eligible package through an affiliate partner. ESPN’s supported-device information

Why an app badge and the TV’s HDR indicator can differ
An in-app badge identifies how a program is labeled in the service; it is not a measurement of the signal reaching the screen. The more useful observation during playback is whether the television itself reports HDR activation, alongside whether the picture is smooth and visibly consistent. Even a TV’s HDR indicator confirms only that it is receiving an HDR signal; it does not independently measure resolution or prove that playback is trouble-free.
The Reddit account describes a mismatch between the ESPN app’s program labels and the TCL owner’s observed TV playback. The available reports do not establish whether the cause is the app, the device, a particular event, network conditions, or another part of the delivery chain.

What to check if ESPN 4K HDR is not working
ESPN’s general troubleshooting guidance, updated August 21, 2025, is not specific to this reported Google TV issue and does not promise to resolve it. It provides a sensible sequence for ruling out common playback problems:
- Check ESPN’s supported-device listing and confirm the device is running a supported operating-system version.
- Check that the internet connection is stable. ESPN Fan Support recommends at least 25.0 Mbps for 4K UHD content; this is a recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular ESPN event or device will deliver 4K HDR. ESPN’s connection-speed recommendations
- Force-close and relaunch the ESPN app. If playback remains poor, restart the streaming device.
- Check the internet connection and HDMI connections, then try another app to see whether the problem also occurs outside ESPN.
- Reinstall the ESPN app and, if available, try ESPN on another device.
- If the issue persists, contact ESPN Support.
How to compare results without confusing the variables
If you test another setup, keep the comparison tied to what you can actually observe. Record the television or streamer model and its Google TV or Android TV version, the ESPN app version, and whether the event is labeled 4K HDR. During playback, note whether the TV reports HDR, whether the stream stutters or pauses, and how the picture looks. You can also note connection stability and whether the same event and account behave differently on another supported device.

ESPN lists Roku as a supported TV-connected platform, so an existing Roku device can serve as an optional comparison. The single positive Roku report in the Reddit thread is not a platform-wide result, and buying another device is not an established fix for the Google TV issue.
