An ESP8266 can control a compatible air conditioner over Wi-Fi by sending the same infrared commands as its handheld remote. With ESPHome’s IR Remote Climate integration, the board acts as a network-connected IR remote. The key limitation is that sending a command does not prove the AC received it or changed state; feedback requires an IR receiver, and state tracking is supported only for select AC platforms.
How an ESP8266 AC controller works
The ESP8266 connects to Wi-Fi and runs ESPHome. Its IR transmitter sends commands that the air conditioner’s own remote would send. ESPHome describes the integration as controlling compatible AC units “by sending an infrared (IR) control signal, just as the unit’s handheld remote controller would.” See the ESPHome IR Remote Climate documentation for the current integration details and supported platforms.
This is an infrared control path, not a direct electrical connection to the AC. The controller must be placed so its transmitter can reach the unit’s IR receiver. Home Assistant can then use the ESPHome climate entity to expose controls over the network.
Check compatibility before choosing parts
ESPHome lists supported AC platforms including Ballu, Coolix, Daikin, Fujitsu General, LG, Midea, Mitsubishi, and Toshiba, among others. The list is protocol-dependent: support for a manufacturer does not establish that every model from that brand uses a supported protocol. Check the current ESPHome list against the specific unit or its remote before purchasing hardware or building around this approach.

Also check which controls the integration exposes for your protocol. Climate entities can represent features such as mode, target temperature, fan mode, swing mode, preset, and action, but the available controls vary by integration. ESPHome’s climate entity documentation explains these possible states and controls.
Understand command sending versus state feedback
With only an IR transmitter, the controller cannot tell whether the AC received or acted on a command. The integration therefore assumes the state most recently requested, which can differ from the unit’s real state if a signal is missed or someone changes settings with the original remote.

An IR receiver can help track state when the original remote is used, but ESPHome supports this receiver-based tracking only for select platforms. Verify that the specific protocol supports receiving before adding a receiver or expecting the displayed state to stay synchronized.
Hardware you may need
- ESP8266 development board: Runs ESPHome and connects the controller to Wi-Fi.
- IR transmitter module: Required to send commands to the AC.
- IR receiver module: Optional; useful only where the AC platform supports receiving and state tracking.
- Temperature sensor: Optional, depending on whether your intended automation needs a temperature measurement from the room rather than relying only on the AC’s own controls.

Plan the build without assuming a universal wiring diagram
- Identify the AC’s protocol. Check the exact model or remote against ESPHome’s current supported-platform information.
- Decide whether feedback matters. If you need to account for commands sent by the original remote, verify that ESPHome supports receiving for the relevant platform.
- Choose compatible components. Confirm your board, transmitter, optional receiver, and sensor meet the voltage and GPIO requirements of your particular circuit.
- Plan transmitter placement. The IR signal needs a usable path to the AC’s receiver; choose a location accordingly.
- Configure ESPHome and connect it to Home Assistant. Use the integration documentation for the supported platform and configuration details, then verify that the resulting climate controls meet your needs.
The cited ESPHome integration documentation establishes the software route and the need for a remote transmitter, but it does not specify one universal board model, circuit, pin assignment, or electrical rating. Those details depend on the ESP8266 board and circuit you select, so do not treat any example build as a guaranteed wiring recipe.

An ESP8266 IR controller is a practical option when the AC accepts a supported IR protocol and you want to control it through ESPHome and Home Assistant. It is less suitable when your automation depends on confirmed device state but the protocol has no receiver support, or when the exact AC protocol is not supported. Compare options by protocol compatibility, feedback capability, exposed climate controls, and whether a separate room-temperature sensor is needed.
