Choose an error-tracking API by checking whether it can retrieve the events your team needs, how long your plan retains them, and what the service does when you reach event or API limits. Sentry documents a project error-events endpoint with time filters and pagination; Rollbar publishes plan-based retention and configurable submission limits; BugSnag describes saved-event search and daily quota behavior. Those are different capabilities, so verify the exact plan and account settings before deciding.
What to verify before choosing an error-tracking API
Start with the investigation you need to perform: which errors must be searchable, how far back they may occur, and whether you need event summaries or full payloads. Then confirm that your plan retains those events for the required period and that quota or rate-limit behavior will not prevent them from being saved.
- Retrieval: Check the API’s query scope, filters, pagination, payload detail, and authentication requirements.
- Retention: Confirm the period for the specific plan and whether the setting is configurable. Expired data may be permanently deleted or made inaccessible.
- Limits: Identify whether the relevant cap applies to API requests, event submissions, or daily event volume—and what happens when it is reached.
Do not treat an advertised retention window as a guarantee that every event will be captured. A service can retain saved events for a given period while rejecting, rate-limiting, or discarding events before they are stored.
How the three APIs differ
| Service | Event retrieval and search | Retention stated in vendor sources | Limit behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sentry | The project events endpoint lists errors with time-range controls, cursor pagination, and an optional full-payload mode. [Sentry project events API] | Not stated in the cited sources; confirm the current retention terms for your organization and plan. | API request and concurrency limits apply. Responses include limit, remaining, and reset headers. [Sentry API rate limits] |
| Rollbar | The pricing page lists Analyze with RQL and the Metrics API on paid levels or as an add-on; confirm the exact query scope available to your plan. [Rollbar pricing] | The pricing page lists maximum retention of 30 days for Free, 90 days for Essentials, 180 days for Advanced, and custom for Enterprise. Documentation says actual defaults and available settings depend on plan. [Rollbar retention documentation] | Configured project-token limits can cause POST item calls to return HTTP 429 until the next window. [Rollbar rate limits] |
| BugSnag | The Data Access API exposes organization, project, and error information; saved events can be searched and segmented in the dashboard. [BugSnag API overview] | The pricing page lists 7 days for Free, 60 days for some paid tiers, and custom retention for another tier. The cited page result does not establish the exact mapping for every tier. [BugSnag pricing] | Daily quota choices include capturing every event or rate-limiting. Rate-limited events are not saved. Sentry: retrieve project error events with time and cursor controls
Sentry’s API documentation describes its web API as a way to access the platform programmatically, manage account-level resources, and manage or export data. The project error-events endpoint accepts either a statistics period or explicit start and end times, supports cursor pagination, and can return full payloads. The full-payload mode caps each page at 10 events. Calls require bearer authentication and one of the listed project scopes. See the endpoint documentation for the supported parameters and scopes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Sentry calls its current public API v0 and notes that beta endpoints may change. It also provides region-specific domains, which it says generally reduce latency for calls to an organization’s region. Because the cited sources do not establish a current retention duration, confirm that separately for your account rather than inferring it from the endpoint. API request-rate and concurrency limits are separate from event retention; inspect the response headers and rate-limit documentation when designing polling or export jobs.
Rollbar: compare query access with plan retention and submission limits
Rollbar’s pricing page lists maximum retention periods of 30 days on Free, 90 days on Essentials, and 180 days on Advanced, with custom retention on Enterprise. These are vendor-listed plan terms, not an independent measurement. Rollbar’s retention documentation separately says free-plan defaults are 30 days and paid-plan defaults can be up to 180 days, while noting that available settings depend on plan type. Retention settings can therefore differ from the maximum shown in a plan comparison: confirm the applicable value and configuration for the account. Data older than the configured period is permanently deleted or redacted and becomes inaccessible. See pricing and retention documentation.

For retrieval, the pricing page lists Rollbar Analyze with RQL and the Metrics API on paid levels or as an add-on. That listing does not by itself establish whether the query scope meets a particular investigation or export workflow; verify the product access and query capabilities included in the selected plan. Separately, a configured project-token limit can make POST item calls return HTTP 429 until the next limit window. That is a submission constraint, not a retention setting. Details are in the rate-limit documentation.

BugSnag separates its Data Access API, which provides information about organizations, projects, errors, and more, from its Error Reporting API, which sends error notifications to BugSnag. The distinction matters when evaluating an “error tracking API”: reporting an error and retrieving information about reported errors are separate jobs. The API overview describes those interfaces.

BugSnag says incoming events may be saved, rate-limited, or discarded. Saved events are available for dashboard search and segmentation. Its billing guidance defines an event as an error reported by an application and describes daily quota strategies that include capturing every event or rate-limiting; a rate-limited event is not saved. The vendor’s usage guide and billing documentation explain the quota behavior.
The pricing page lists 7 days of retention for Free, 60 days on some paid tiers, and custom retention on another tier. The available listing does not fully establish the tier mapping, so confirm the current plan’s specific duration and whether the Data Export API or other access is included. Consult BugSnag pricing for current plan terms.

Do not confuse the different kinds of limits
Limits act at different points in the data path. A request-rate cap can slow or block retrieval calls; a submission cap can prevent new events from arriving; and a daily quota policy can mean some incoming events are never saved. Their effects are not interchangeable.

- Rollbar: Configured occurrence limits can reject item submissions with HTTP 429 until the next window.

Run a plan-and-workflow check before committing
- Write down the investigation window. Decide how far back engineers need to search and whether they need complete event payloads or only event-level information.
- Map that need to documented retrieval. For Sentry, check the project endpoint’s time filters, cursor behavior, full-payload option, and scopes. For Rollbar, confirm the exact RQL or Metrics API access offered by the plan. For BugSnag, distinguish Data Access API retrieval from Error Reporting API submission and confirm what saved-event search or export covers.
- Confirm retention on the actual plan. Treat published durations as vendor plan terms, not a promise about your organization’s settings. For Sentry, the sources cited here do not establish a retention duration. For Rollbar and BugSnag, validate current plan mapping and configured retention directly.
- Trace what happens at each limit. Ask whether the service delays, rejects, rate-limits, or discards data, and whether a blocked operation can be retried. Account for request limits separately from event-ingestion quotas.
- Check the organization’s operating context. Confirm region-specific endpoint needs, account configuration, and any contract terms that affect access or retention before relying on the API for incident investigations.
