Neither store has a blanket advantage on refunds or cloud saves. For eligible PC purchases, both use a headline refund window of 14 days and less than two hours of play, but their eligibility checks and request routes differ. Cloud saves are available only for games that support them on either storefront, and sync problems can leave you with missing or conflicting files.

How do Epic and Steam refunds compare?
The headline thresholds are similar, but neither is an unconditional promise of a refund. Check the specific purchase’s status, how much it has been played or run, and the store’s current terms before relying on the standard window.
Epic Games Store
Epic’s US English policy covers purchases made through Epic checkout on PC, Mac, and mobile. For PC and Mac, the product must be marked “refundable” or “self-refundable”; a request must be made within 14 days of purchase (or within 14 days after release for a pre-purchase), with less than two hours of runtime. Mobile products with those labels have a two-hour-from-purchase window. See the Epic Games Store Refund Policy for the applicable terms.
The label determines the route: self-refundable purchases can be requested through the account’s Transactions page, while other refundable purchases require contacting Player Support. Items marked non-refundable—including many consumables, virtual currency, subscriptions, and gifts—may not qualify under the policy. Purchases made through another store follow that seller’s rules, and local statutory rights may apply.

Steam
Steam’s general rule for a title is a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. Steam counts online, offline, and shared-library play. The rule is not a blanket guarantee for every DLC or in-game purchase; Steam directs customers to submit requests through Steam Support. It says requests outside the standard conditions can still be made and will be reviewed.
If a game drops in price after you buy it
Epic says a recent purchase that goes on sale can be refunded and repurchased at the lower price if it remains within the 14-day window and below two hours of playtime. Epic says this does not count as refund abuse; see its sale-price refund guidance.

Which store supports cloud saves for your game?
There is no universal cloud-save coverage on either store, and the available official information does not establish which catalog has more supported games. Check the individual game rather than assuming that cloud saves are included because the storefront offers the feature.
Check Epic Games Store
- In the Epic Games Launcher, open your Library and use the Cloud Saves filter to find games that support the feature.
- Alternatively, open the game’s Epic store page and look at its Features tags.
Epic describes Cloud Saves as automatically storing supported games’ save files online so they can be used across devices. Its instructions are on the Epic Games Store cloud-save support page.

Check Steam
Open the game’s Steam store listing and check whether Steam Cloud is listed. Steam Cloud can store saves, settings, profile statistics, and other user-specific data, but game developers configure support at the game level; it can also be disabled for an individual game. A cloud-save badge does not guarantee that every sync will succeed or that a service can restore a lost file. If a game offers its own backup or save-export option, use it before changing devices or troubleshooting. When comparing a local and cloud copy, check their timestamps and progress carefully before choosing one.

Epic Games Store
Epic says conflicts can occur after Cloud Save has been disabled and then enabled again. For the specific offline-sync problem described in its support article, Epic tells players to select the file marked “NEWER.” Treat that as guidance for that scenario, not a rule that the newest file is always the right one. Follow the steps on Epic’s Cloud Saving troubleshooting page.
Steam
Steam warns that a recent save may be missing if synchronization failed or an older version was uploaded. Its support page states that Steam Support cannot recover lost save data or resolve cloud conflicts. If progress matters, keep a separate local backup where the game makes that possible before deleting, overwriting, or syncing files.

Platform and regional details to verify
Epic’s FAQ lists the store on PC, Mac, and Android worldwide, and on iPhone and iPad in the EU, subject to availability; compatibility is product-specific, so check the individual listing. Those statements do not provide a like-for-like platform comparison with Steam. Refund eligibility can also depend on where you live and where you bought the game, so consult the policy for the relevant store and your local consumer-law rights.
