Engineers from the University of Glasgow and Japan’s Kyushu Institute of Technology plan to send whisky-making materials into space aboard a CubeSat, currently targeted for launch in 2028. The proposed experiment is not a report of whisky already distilled in orbit: it is a future engineering and chemistry study, with a nanophotonic sensor intended to track changes in a small fluid sample and a separate test of whisky-cask wood.
What the Glasgow–Kyushu project plans to do
The University of Glasgow’s James Watt School of Engineering is leading the work with Kyushu Institute of Technology. Dr Gilles Bailet is the project lead, and seven final-year Glasgow mechanical engineering students are working with Japanese colleagues on parts of the system, including its battery, radio and onboard computers.
The university’s 2026 announcement describes a planned CubeSat payload containing 10 ml of fluid, a fragment of whisky-cask wood and a nanophotonic chemical sensor. The sensor, technology previously developed by Dr Alasdair Clark, is described as an artificial “tongue” that will detect changes in the fluid’s composition. The announcement gives 2028 as the planned launch year and says the investigation could last up to five years. These are project plans, not completed mission events or findings.
The announcement describes the payload as directly exposed to the vacuum of space, unlike earlier whisky-related work conducted inside the International Space Station. It does not specify the final payload configuration, containment details, launch provider or approval status.

Two strands of the experiment
Monitoring chemical change
The sensor is intended to track chemical changes in the sample as researchers investigate how whisky-making processes behave in a space environment. The project uses whisky as a familiar model for studying chemical and biological processes, and its stated ambitions include learning how such processes might be monitored and controlled in orbit.
Testing a piece of cask wood
A separate part of the experiment will monitor a whisky-cask wood fragment as it encounters orbital temperature swings. The university announcement describes rapid hot-and-cold cycles of about 90 minutes and says the team expects the wood to respond differently in that environment. That is an expectation to be tested, not a measured result.

Why study whisky-making processes in orbit?
In the project announcement, Bailet calls whisky “a very recognisable, very well-understood model for studying and monitoring biological and chemical processes in microgravity.” The familiar material gives the team a way to investigate chemical evolution and sensing in a setting where physical processes may behave differently.
NASA describes the International Space Station as a long-duration near-weightlessness research environment, where forces other than gravity can become more influential. That general context helps explain the scientific interest in space-based experiments; it does not establish how this particular sample will change.

The university also says the project aims to demonstrate how ethanol could be produced or extracted in orbit. Bailet forecast that the work could provide insight into monitoring and controlling fermentation and chemical evolution in space. The announcement connects this longer-term research interest to orbital chemistry and biomanufacturing, including possible applications involving high-value pharmaceuticals and cancer therapeutics. Those are potential future applications, not demonstrated medical benefits or therapeutic results.
How this differs from Ardbeg’s earlier space experiment
Ardbeg’s earlier project, described in a 2015 project white paper, examined maturation chemistry using Scotch malt distillate and charred oak in MixStix containers, alongside a terrestrial control. Its aims included studying naturally occurring terpenes, the extraction of flavour-active compounds from oak and microgravity’s possible effect on a model maturation system. The samples returned to Earth on 12 September 2014, after 971 days in microgravity, according to the paper.

That experiment was a study of distillate and oak as a maturation model; it was not whisky distillation in orbit. The Glasgow–Kyushu project is a planned CubeSat mission with onboard chemical sensing and, according to the university, direct exposure to space vacuum. Its results remain unknown.

What is known—and what remains open
The project announcement establishes the collaborators, planned research aims and broad payload elements, but it does not report a launch, measurements or experimental outcomes. It also does not establish that a space-flown whisky product will be made or sold. Distillery-design consultancy Allen Associates is reported to have provided a grant for the initial Japan visit and to support development; the announcement does not describe a broader commercial sponsorship arrangement.
