Endless OS 6 is a strong candidate for learners and schools that value offline access and ready-to-use educational and creative software—but the available evidence does not establish it as the best Linux distribution for every school. Its fit depends on the school’s required apps, hardware, storage, connectivity, support capacity, and need for centralized device management.
What Endless OS 6 offers learners
Endless OS describes its system as free, multilingual, usable offline, and supplied with open-source apps. Its product overview lists LibreOffice for schoolwork and productivity, plus creative tools including GIMP, Inkscape, Blender, Audacity, and Godot. It also promotes Endless Key, an app with curated educational resources, games, e-books, and videos. Endless OS says Endless Key is aimed at grades 5–9, has English and Spanish content, and does not require student accounts. The OS 6 announcement also highlights TurtleBlocks and educational games such as Aqueducts, Dragon’s Apprentice, Fablemaker, Frog Squash, The Passage, and Tank Warriors. Endless OS presents these as ways to explore coding concepts and game development. Kolibri for offline learning content
Kolibri is another possible component of an offline learning setup. Endless OS 6.0.1, released June 11, 2024, brought a newer Kolibri version and described simpler setup and access to resources from remote Kolibri libraries. Support documentation says Kolibri comes preinstalled in some versions and can also be installed through App Center. Is Endless OS 6 suitable for schools?
Endless OS has an institutional deployment path: its documentation says deployments commonly take place in schools, libraries, and community centers, and provides material on customizing images, USB-based mass installation, automatic reflash, and offline metrics. That makes a managed image or school pilot a credible use case. The existence of deployment tools, however, should not be mistaken for centralized fleet management. Endless OS support says parental controls can restrict apps, prevent further app installation, and apply age-rating restrictions to browsing and app installs. It also says there is no remotely managed parental-control or device-management solution. Questions to resolve before a school rollout
- Connectivity: Will the learning activities and resources students need be available offline, including any locally stored content?
- Applications and peripherals: Do required web services, classroom apps, printers, cameras, accessibility tools, and other peripherals work on the exact devices?
- Onboarding: Can students, teachers, and support staff use the interface and install or access the software they need?
- Storage: Is there enough local space for the chosen edition and any educational content the school plans to keep on-device?
- Operations: Does image customization and deployment suit the school’s workflow, and can it operate without the remote device-management features it may expect?
- Support: Are local IT skills and ongoing support available for the hardware and software mix?
No independent benchmark or controlled school comparison in the cited official materials establishes that Endless OS improves learning outcomes, reduces support costs by a measurable amount, or outranks competing distributions. Schools should base a decision on a pilot with their own hardware, applications, staff, and management workflow.
What’s new in Endless OS 6, and what is the latest release?
Endless OS 6 launched in May 2024 with a dark style, a redesigned screenshot and screen-recording flow, updated apps, hardware and Bluetooth audio improvements, and better behavior in low-memory situations. As of September 30, 2026, the latest official Endless OS 6 point-release notes identified here are for version 6.0.11, released May 8, 2026. Those notes report Linux kernel 6.18, updated firmware, NVIDIA graphics driver 555.59.02, and Mesa 25.0.7. They also describe an updater change addressing limited EFI system partition space on some older installations. Hardware, editions, and storage
The direct-download documentation targets standard 64-bit Intel or AMD PCs and offers Basic and Full editions. It also lists Raspberry Pi and other ARM-related images, while stating that ARM platforms are beta and not formally supported. Compatibility can vary by model and peripheral, so verify the exact device rather than assuming every PC will work. Endless OS download options.

For Windows installer side-by-side allocation, Endless OS recommends at least 16 GB for Basic and at least 32 GB for Full; it says preinstalled Full apps take up to 20 GB. These are edition-specific recommendations on the installer help page, originally dated 2021—not universal minimum hardware requirements. The official installation documentation distinguishes two routes: “Try Endless OS without formatting your computer” and “Reformat your computer with Endless OS.” A bootable USB flash drive is needed to create installation media; the operating system itself is free, and no particular brand or capacity is specified in the cited guidance. - Choose an edition and download: Use the Endless OS download page to select the appropriate PC image and Basic or Full edition.
- Create a bootable USB stick: Follow the official installation guide to prepare the installer. USB-run performance may be limited, so treat it as a way to test compatibility and the experience, not necessarily as a performance benchmark.
- Try without formatting: Choose “Try Endless OS without formatting your computer” to test the system without wiping the computer. Check Wi-Fi, sound, display, input devices, and any school-critical peripherals.
- Install only after safeguarding data: The “Reformat your computer with Endless OS” route reformats the computer and removes the existing operating system and data. Back up anything you need before proceeding.
- For Windows side-by-side installation: Review the installer’s edition-specific allocation guidance and confirm that enough storage remains for both systems and any local content.
Who should consider Endless OS 6?
Endless OS 6 is worth evaluating for households, learners, and selected school deployments that want a free desktop with offline-capable educational and creative tools, and for institutions prepared to test and customize deployments. It is a less straightforward choice for organizations whose essential applications, hardware, or accessibility requirements have not been validated, or whose operations depend on centrally managed devices. A pilot on the actual target devices is the practical way to resolve those questions.
