The Elephant Robotics myAGV 2023 Pi is a compact, omnidirectional robot base for learning ROS, mapping indoor spaces, and prototyping mobile-manipulation projects. Its 360-degree LiDAR, camera, Raspberry Pi 4B, and mecanum wheels make it a capable starting point, but confirm the generation before buying: an earlier myAGV is listed with a 2 kg payload, while the Pi 2023 specification lists 5 kg. The manufacturer’s specifications are not independent performance tests, and the available product information does not establish industrial certification or outdoor ruggedness.

What the myAGV is designed to do

The myAGV is a small mobile robot base built around four mecanum wheels. This wheel arrangement allows the robot to move sideways as well as forward and backward, and to rotate in place—useful behaviors for indoor navigation experiments in tighter spaces. Elephant Robotics pairs the base with 360-degree LiDAR and a built-in camera, giving developers integrated sensors for mapping, obstacle-avoidance, and computer-vision projects.

The Pi 2023 platform uses a Raspberry Pi 4B with 2 GB of RAM and a customized Ubuntu MATE 20.04 environment. The manufacturer lists Python development, ROS simulation, graphical and visual programming, and gamepad and keyboard control. It also describes 2D and 3D mapping and navigation. The older documentation names gmapping and Cartographer as built-in SLAM algorithms; the available product information does not specify a ROS version for either generation.

In practical terms, myAGV is best understood as an educational and prototyping platform rather than a ready-made industrial autonomous mobile robot. It gives a learner or developer a compact base and sensors to explore robotics software, but project setup, programming, and integration remain part of the work.

How well suited is it to ROS, SLAM, and navigation?

myAGV’s strongest case is as a hands-on robotics development base. LiDAR provides range data for mapping and navigation experiments, while the mecanum drive supports motion beyond simple forward-and-back movement. The older model’s official documentation identifies gmapping and Cartographer for SLAM. Elephant Robotics says the Pi 2023 supports 2D and 3D mapping and navigation, but the available product material does not give a ROS release number or enough detail to compare software support across generations.

The built-in camera adds a separate path for vision projects, such as object-recognition and positioning experiments. The product information identifies the Pi 2023 camera as 5 megapixels with a 65-degree viewing angle; it does not establish how well a particular vision task will perform. Expect to build and tune the software for the environment and task rather than assume the sensors make navigation or recognition turnkey.

For teaching or prototyping, the combination of Raspberry Pi, Ubuntu MATE, Python, ROS-related tools, and gamepad or keyboard control can reduce the amount of hardware a project needs to assemble from scratch. Elephant Robotics also references SSH, VNC, and VSCode in its development materials. Buyers should still verify that the particular software instructions and packages they need support the model and software image being sold.

Can you add a myCobot arm or other accessories?

Yes, Elephant Robotics positions myAGV as a mobile-manipulation base. Its Pi 2023 materials list compatibility with myPalletizer, mechArm, myCobot, myArm, and ultraArm families; the older documentation lists myCobot, myPalletizer, and mechArm families. That compatibility claim does not mean an arm is included with every myAGV package, nor does it establish that every arm revision or accessory will fit a particular bundle. Confirm the exact model and mounting or interface requirements with the seller before ordering.

What are the main advantages and trade-offs?

Advantages

  • More flexible indoor movement: Mecanum wheels allow lateral and in-place movement that ordinary two-wheel differential drive bases do not provide.
  • Sensors are part of the platform: The Pi 2023 specification includes 360-degree LiDAR and a camera, giving projects a starting point for navigation and vision experiments.
  • Approachable development hardware: A Raspberry Pi-based computer, Ubuntu MATE, Python, and ROS-oriented materials make the system relevant to education and maker or research prototyping.
  • Potential for mobile manipulation: Listed compatibility with several Elephant Robotics arm families makes it possible to explore picking, sorting, and other mobile-arm demonstrations, subject to the exact arm and package.

Trade-offs

  • Generation names can obscure important differences: The older 2 kg model and Pi 2023 5 kg model are not interchangeable specification-wise.
  • Advertised runtime needs context: The Pi 2023 endurance figure is not accompanied by test conditions in the cited materials, while the older model has a different stated range.
  • A complete robot setup may cost more than the base: An arm, end effector, spare battery, or display may be a separate package or accessory.
  • Its documented focus is indoor development: The cited materials emphasize education, research, and mapping. They do not establish industrial safety certification, outdoor ruggedization, or production fleet-support capabilities.

Is the Elephant Robotics myAGV worth it?

The myAGV Pi 2023 is worth considering if the goal is to learn or prototype indoor mobile robotics with a compact base, integrated LiDAR and camera, and a Raspberry Pi development environment. It is particularly appealing when sideways movement, ROS-oriented experimentation, or a future arm integration is important. The value depends on buying the right generation and selecting a package that actually contains the computer, accessories, or arm the project requires.

Before choosing a listing, verify that it explicitly identifies the Pi 2023 revision if you need its 5 kg payload specification. Compare the included package contents, check arm compatibility at the model level, and treat the stated runtime as a manufacturer specification rather than a guaranteed result for your workload. If the project requires certified industrial operation, outdoor use, or fleet-management support, the cited product materials are not enough to establish that myAGV meets those requirements.
