Choose a spring-applied electromagnetic friction brake when a load must be held at rest or the brake must engage when electrical power is removed. Choose an eddy-current brake for contactless retardation while a load is moving. Because eddy-current braking falls to zero at standstill, a machine that must stop and remain held needs a separate holding brake.
What distinguishes the two brake types?
“Electromagnetic brake” is a broad term. In this comparison, it means a friction brake whose braking torque comes from friction surfaces, as opposed to an eddy-current brake, whose braking effect comes from electromagnetic drag without contact.
Electromagnetic friction brake
In a spring-applied, power-off design, springs press the friction surfaces together to apply the brake; an electromagnet releases them. KEB describes its Combistop brake this way and identifies static holding at zero speed as a typical duty. Dynamic engagement also wears the friction surfaces over time. KEB America’s VFD brake-control application notes explain this construction and its use.
Eddy-current brake
When a conductor moves through a magnetic field, induced currents create an electromagnetic effect that opposes the motion. There is no friction contact, but braking depends on relative motion: at standstill, the braking effect is zero. An eddy-current brake is therefore a retarder, not a parking or static holding brake. Thomasnet’s overview of electromagnetic brake types describes this limitation; EMTorq’s product information describes contactless industrial units.

Compare the application fit
| Application need | Better starting point | Why and what to check |
|---|---|---|
| Hold a vertical axis, hoist, or other load at rest | Spring-applied, power-off friction brake | Spring force applies the brake when coil power is removed. Verify rated holding torque and the system’s required safety behavior. |
| Apply braking after electrical power is lost | Power-off, spring-applied friction brake | The springs apply the brake and the electromagnet releases it in the KEB construction. Confirm the specific brake and system design meet the required safety case. |
| Retard a moving load without friction contact | Eddy-current brake | Industrial examples include crane and hoist load brakes and rail track brakes. It cannot hold the load once it stops. |
| Reduce contact wear during repeated dynamic retardation | Eddy-current brake may be worth evaluating | Its non-contact design has no friction surfaces, but heat dissipation and the full duty profile still need evaluation. |
| Stop a load and then hold it | A system providing both functions | Use a dynamic retarder if appropriate and a friction holding brake for zero-speed holding. |
| Continuously control web or material tension | A tension-control brake family, such as a powder brake | This is an adjacent solution, not an interchangeable version of the two main choices. Mitsubishi Electric’s 2024 catalog discusses powder-brake characteristics and current-based tension control. |
Industrial examples illustrate the different roles: EMTorq lists shaft-, flange-, and foot-mount eddy-current brakes for applications including cranes, hoists, and load braking. Knorr-Bremse describes EddyAct eddy-current track brakes as complementing pneumatic friction brakes, particularly on high-speed trains. See EMTorq’s eddy-current brake information and Knorr-Bremse’s rail vehicle actuator portfolio. These are examples of product families, not model recommendations.
How to select a brake for your machine
- Define the job at zero speed. Decide whether the brake must hold a stationary load, stop it while moving, or do both. A zero-speed holding requirement rules out an eddy-current brake as the only brake.
- Specify power-loss behavior. Determine whether the brake must apply when power is removed or apply only when energized. Do not assume every electromagnetic brake uses the same operating arrangement; verify the specific product’s design.
- Establish torque, speed, and stopping duty. Provide the required holding and dynamic torque, operating speed range, and expected stopping or retarding duty. These values depend on the machine; the cited sources do not size a brake for an unspecified application.
- Evaluate duty cycle and heat. Contactless braking avoids friction-surface wear but still requires assessment of energy dissipation and thermal limits for the actual operating profile. EMTorq’s product page does not establish a universal thermal rating.
- Check mounting and space. Confirm the shaft or mounting arrangement and the room available in the machine. Available eddy-current product forms include shaft, flange, and foot mounts, but compatibility depends on the particular model and installation.
- Plan for wear and maintenance. A friction interface has wear parts; KEB notes incremental friction-surface wear with dynamic engagement. Eddy-current designs avoid friction surfaces, but that alone does not establish the maintenance needs of an entire braking system.
- Decide whether the system needs two brakes. If the eddy-current unit handles dynamic retardation, determine how the load will be held after it stops. Add a suitable mechanical holding brake when the application requires static holding.
What the product examples do—and do not—tell you
- KEB Combistop: a spring-applied friction disc brake; springs provide holding force and an electromagnet releases the disc. KEB describes static holding at zero speed as typical duty and notes wear from dynamic engagement. Read KEB’s application notes.
- EMTorq industrial eddy-current brakes: contactless units offered in several mounting forms, with listed crane, hoist, and load-brake applications. See EMTorq’s product information.
- Knorr-Bremse rail brakes: the portfolio includes electromagnetic track brakes and EddyAct eddy-current track brakes; the latter complement pneumatic friction brakes in some rail applications. See the rail vehicle actuator portfolio.
- Mitsubishi Electric powder brakes: a separate option for continuous material-tension duties, covered in its 2024 electromagnetic clutch/brake tension controller catalog.
These examples establish the kinds of products used in different roles, not which model suits a particular machine. Model selection requires the application’s torque, speed, duty, power, mounting, and holding requirements. Electromate’s industrial brake overview also distinguishes power-on, power-off, and spring-applied brake categories.
