Choose an electric kettle if fast, convenient boiling matters most; choose a stovetop kettle if you prefer that format and have a compatible hob. One published head-to-head test found the electric model faster, but its results apply to the specific kettles and induction setup tested—not every appliance or heat source. For either type, the clearest way to avoid wasting energy is to heat only the water you need.
How do electric and stovetop kettles compare?
| Factor | Electric kettle | Stovetop kettle |
|---|---|---|
| Boiling | In an Ideal Home test, the electric model boiled 1.7 litres in 4 minutes 18 seconds. | In the same test, the stovetop model took 7 minutes 3 seconds on an induction hob. |
| Where it goes | Needs a suitable countertop spot and electrical connection; it boils on its base. | Uses hob space and must be compatible with the hob. |
| Switch-off | Electric kettles can switch off automatically at boiling or at a preset temperature below 100°C; features vary by model. | Not established for stovetop kettles as a category; follow the individual product’s instructions. |
| Cleaning and noise | No general comparison established. | Ideal Home’s reviewer found the tested model quieter during most of the boil and easier to clean thoroughly, but noted its whistle at boiling. |
The timing and reviewer observations come from tests of particular products, not controlled findings about every kettle. The stovetop test used induction; it does not establish timing on gas or conventional electric hobs. Ideal Home’s comparison describes the models and setup.
Which kettle boils water faster?
The tested electric kettle was faster: it boiled 1.7 litres in 4 minutes 18 seconds, compared with 7 minutes 3 seconds for the tested stovetop kettle on induction. That is useful evidence if speed is your priority, but it is one product pairing and setup, not a universal performance guarantee. Results can differ with the kettle, the volume of water and, for a stovetop model, the hob.
Which type uses less energy?
The available evidence does not establish a universal energy-efficiency winner between electric and stovetop kettles. Actual use depends on the amount of water heated, the appliance, the heat source and local energy prices.

Heat only what you need
Energy Saving Trust advises avoiding overfilling. Its current consumer guidance says an eco kettle that boils only the required amount can use 20% less energy than a conventional electric kettle; that comparison is between electric kettle types, not electric and stovetop kettles. Energy Saving Trust’s appliance guidance also explains the advice to boil only the amount needed.
The scale of overfilling is specific to the UK: in its 2025 At Home with Water report, Energy Saving Trust said 75% of UK respondents reported boiling more water than needed and estimated that this overfilling cost British household energy bills £68 million per year. These are report estimates, not figures for every country or current kettle user.

Put the test cost in context
Ideal Home calculated costs for its test using an assumed rate of 26.35 p/kWh: 5.67p for its full electric kettle and 5.57p for its stovetop kettle on induction. Those figures depend on the tested products, setup and rate assumption; they are not current universal costs or proof that stovetop kettles are cheaper to run.

Hob compatibility and space
A stovetop kettle uses a burner and takes up hob space, so check that the specific model works with your hob. The cited timing test used induction and cannot tell you how a kettle will perform on gas or a conventional electric hob. An electric kettle instead needs a practical countertop location and a power connection.

Convenience and temperature control
Electric kettles are self-contained appliances. A 2016 University of Strathclyde study describes them as able to switch off automatically at boiling or at a preset temperature below 100°C. Controls and features vary, so consult the specific model’s instructions rather than assuming every electric kettle offers temperature selection.
Noise, cleaning and limescale
Ideal Home’s reviewer found the tested stovetop kettle quieter through most of its boil and easier to clean thoroughly, while observing that its whistle sounded at boiling. Treat these as one reviewer’s experience with the products tested, not a general rule for either kettle type. In a hard-water area, consider how easy it is to reach and clean the kettle interior; limescale can affect upkeep. Ideal Home’s cleaning discussion covers the reviewer’s observations.

Routine, storage and appearance
Consider where you have room, whether you want an appliance on the counter or prefer to use the hob, and which format suits your routine. Noise and appearance are personal preferences; the evidence here does not establish a category-wide advantage for either type.
