No security patch or firmware update is available for Edimax’s discontinued IC-7100 IP camera. Edimax said on March 10, 2025, that support and firmware maintenance had ended and that the development environment and source code were unavailable. Akamai reported botnet exploitation of the command-injection flaw, including by Mirai variants. Owners should keep the camera off direct internet access, change its default password, monitor its logs and consider replacement if they cannot isolate it safely.
Is there a patch for CVE-2025-1316?
No. Edimax’s official statement dated March 10, 2025 says the IC-7100 had been discontinued for more than ten years, technical support and firmware maintenance had ended, and the company could not provide an update because its development environment and source code were unavailable. Edimax stated: “Due to the unavailability of the development environment and source code, we regret to inform that no security patch or firmware update can be provided for this product.”
This means there is no vendor firmware fix owners can install to correct the reported flaw. Network restrictions and password changes can reduce exposure, but they do not patch the command injection.
What is the vulnerability, and what has Akamai observed?
CVE-2025-1316 is an operating-system command-injection vulnerability associated with the Edimax IC-7100 IP camera. In its March 13, 2025 report, Akamai described exploitation targeting /camera-cgi/admin/param.cgi. The command is injected through the NTP_serverName option in the ipcamSource parameter.

Akamai says the observed exploit attempts required authentication. Its honeypots recorded attackers using default credentials, typically admin:1234. This is not an unauthenticated exploit in the activity Akamai described; leaving default credentials in place can make access easier for attackers.
Akamai says it observed exploitation as early as May 2024 and identified multiple botnets using the flaw, including Mirai variants. It also found a proof of concept dating to June 2023. Captured payloads downloaded shell scripts and Mirai binaries to targeted devices. These are Akamai’s honeypot and investigation observations, not a count of every attack, compromised camera or affected owner.

Does the vulnerability affect only the IC-7100?
The vulnerability disclosure names the IC-7100. Akamai says its technical investigation suggests the affected Edimax device and firmware scope could be broader, but that is not the same as a confirmed list of affected models or versions. Owners of other Edimax cameras should not assume they are affected—or unaffected—based on the IC-7100 advisory alone; check for vendor guidance for the exact model and firmware.
The available reporting does not establish a reliable population-wide count of vulnerable cameras, infected devices or affected organizations. Akamai’s honeypot observations demonstrate exploitation activity, but they do not measure total prevalence.

What should IC-7100 owners do?
Edimax recommends reducing the camera’s exposure and strengthening access controls. If you cannot safely keep the unsupported camera isolated, replacing it with equipment that still receives security updates is a reasonable risk-reduction choice.
- Remove direct internet exposure. Do not expose the camera directly to the internet. Use a firewall or NAT to restrict external access, as Edimax advises. Review router or firewall rules for any port forwarding that makes the camera reachable from outside your network.
- Change the administrator password. Replace the default password with a unique, hard-to-guess one. Akamai observed attackers using default credentials, typically
admin:1234. - Review access logs regularly. Edimax advises monitoring logs for unusual activity. Investigate access you cannot account for, especially if the camera was reachable from the internet or retained default credentials.
- Decide whether to retire the camera. If you cannot restrict access to the camera and keep it usable for your needs, replace it with a currently supported model. When choosing a replacement, check how long the manufacturer commits to security updates, what network exposure controls are available, and whether the camera can operate without direct internet access.
Why is this described as a zero-day?
Some coverage refers to the vulnerability as a zero-day exploited by botnets, while the formal vulnerability identifier is CVE-2025-1316. Akamai found a proof of concept from June 2023 and says its honeypots saw exploitation beginning in May 2024. Those dates describe evidence Akamai found; they do not establish when the flaw was first discovered or exploited in the wild. The UAE Cyber Security Council’s March 2025 advisory characterizes it as a critical command-injection vulnerability actively exploited by botnet malware. Severity scores can differ by scoring version, so a score should not be quoted without identifying the authoritative record and version.
