A strong eCommerce design portfolio should show more than polished screens: it should make the shopping journey, design decisions, device behavior, and evidence of results visible. Reviewing portfolios against those points can reveal what a design process documents well—and what it leaves unclear.
What should an eCommerce website design portfolio include?
A portfolio case study is most useful when it follows the customer’s path from discovery to purchase instead of presenting a gallery of disconnected screens. Look for evidence of the stages below, and note which are absent rather than assuming they were designed poorly.
- Discovery: Homepage, category pages, navigation, and search. These show how shoppers find products.
- Evaluation: Product detail pages, imagery, variant selection, availability, shipping information, reviews or other trust cues, specifications, and returns information.
- Purchase: Cart, checkout, and order confirmation. These show how a shopper reviews an order, completes payment, and sees what happens next.
- Device coverage: Desktop and mobile versions where available. A desktop mockup alone does not demonstrate how the same journey works on a smaller screen.
These stages are a practical review structure, not a universal scoring rubric. Baymard Institute describes its reference library as containing more than 18,000 eCommerce design examples across 74 page types, including desktop, mobile web, and app examples: Baymard’s eCommerce design examples. That breadth is useful for locating patterns; it does not mean every portfolio must show every page type.
How do I review an eCommerce design case study?
Separate what the portfolio shows from what it says the work achieved. A screen is evidence of a design artifact; a claim about better conversion or usability needs supporting measurement and attribution.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Review axis | What to look for | What a gap may mean |
|---|---|---|
| Journey coverage | Which shopping stages and page types are shown? | The case study may not document how shoppers move between stages. |
| Device coverage | Are both desktop and mobile experiences evidenced? | Responsive behavior may be difficult to assess from the published work. |
| Decision quality | Does the case study explain constraints, alternatives, and why a choice was made? | The finished design is visible, but the reasoning behind it is not. |
| Commerce detail | Are product information, variants, availability, shipping, returns, cart, and checkout addressed? | Important purchase details may be missing from the documented journey. |
| Evidence quality | Are results measured and attributed, or only asserted? | A visual presentation alone cannot establish a business outcome. |
| Handoff and iteration | Does the case study show implementation, testing, or collaboration with the merchant team? | The portfolio may not explain how the design moved into use or changed over time. |
Use these axes to describe what is documented, not to infer that an unshown step was omitted from the actual work. Baymard’s benchmark page describes 344 eCommerce sites rated across more than 700 UX elements: Baymard’s eCommerce UX benchmark. That benchmark provides context for the range of UX elements that can matter; it is not a rating of design portfolios.
What makes a good eCommerce product page?
A product page should help a shopper understand what is being sold, choose the right option, and assess the purchase before adding it to the cart. In a portfolio, inspect whether the design makes these details visible:

Shopify’s 2026 eCommerce UX guidance lists these as product-page information elements: Shopify’s eCommerce UX guidance. Baymard says its product-page research spanned more than two years, encountered more than 1,300 product-page-related usability issues, and distilled its findings into more than 110 guidelines: Baymard’s product-page UX research overview. Those figures describe Baymard’s research, not findings from a portfolio review.

Shopify’s 2026 article reports an average of 23.48 checkout form elements and cites Baymard research describing an ideal flow as short as 12 to 14 elements. These are figures reported in Shopify’s guidance, not measurements from the portfolios discussed here. They are a reason to inspect form burden, not a requirement that every checkout use an identical element count.
What can a 30-portfolio review establish?
A review can establish patterns in the material actually examined: for example, whether case studies commonly show both devices, explain design decisions, or document checkout. It cannot establish that an unseen design step was skipped, that a visual choice caused a business result, or that one solution fits every merchant. Those conclusions need evidence beyond portfolio screenshots, such as clearly attributed analytics, testing, or implementation details.

The available reference material does not identify the 30 portfolios, describe a particular review rubric, or report findings from that sample. It therefore supports a method for examining portfolios, but not claims about which gaps those 30 portfolios contained or how often they appeared. A portfolio-by-portfolio finding should be tied to the author’s actual observations rather than inferred from general UX guidance.

Portfolio evidence can help a merchant assess whether a designer explains collaboration and handoff, but it cannot establish one required operating model. Shopify’s Faherty case study describes an arrangement in which Verbal+Visual continued as a design and optimization partner while Faherty’s internal eCommerce team retained ownership of its roadmap, analytics, and feature prioritization: Shopify’s Faherty case study. It is one vendor-published example, not proof that this arrangement is right for every team.
