Connecting an online store to a help desk can put customer profiles and order history beside support tickets, so agents have more context without switching systems. It is not a universal one-click setup: the data, available actions, channel requirements, permissions, and supported store platforms depend on the specific help desk and ecommerce pairing.
This guide explains the documented Gorgias and Zendesk Shopify workflows, what is established for other store platforms, and how to set up and verify a connection.
What an ecommerce integration does—and what it may not do
A store integration links ecommerce records with support work. In Gorgias, for example, the Shopify connection can show customer profiles and order history in the support workspace alongside tickets. Depending on the pairing, agents may also be able to take actions such as issuing refunds or canceling orders.
Those capabilities should not be assumed for every integration. One connection may provide read-only order context, while another may support specific order actions. The available fields and actions can also vary by store platform, help desk product, and plan. Treat the vendor’s documentation for your exact combination as the authority.

Store data and support channels are separate choices
Connecting a store does not automatically mean every support channel is configured or associated with the right storefront. Website chat, email, and social or messaging channels may need their own setup. Gorgias recommends starting with the channels customers actually use, prioritizing the busiest ones, and associating channels with the relevant store so agents can identify which storefront a ticket concerns.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Confirm the exact pairing. Check that the help desk supports your store platform, then identify any product or plan prerequisites. For example, Zendesk’s Shopify guide requires Chat as well as Support for its documented integration.
- Arrange the right store access. Have the store owner or an administrator with the required permissions complete authorization. A standard user account may not be able to approve the connection.
- Install the official integration and authorize it. Follow the vendor’s instructions to reach the platform’s app store or authorization flow, enter the help-desk tenant or subdomain if requested, and approve the access the integration asks for. Review the access request rather than assuming another vendor will ask for the same permissions.
- Finish setup in the help desk. For Gorgias’s documented Shopify flow, go to Settings → Workspace → Store → Add new store → Shopify, then install the app and authorize access in Shopify.
- Wait for any initial import. Gorgias says Shopify customer profiles and order history import in the background; the time can depend on store size. Do not treat a connection as broken solely because all historical context is not visible immediately.
- Verify the result with a known customer. Open a relevant ticket and check whether the expected customer profile and order context appear. If the integration supports order actions, confirm which roles can use them and ensure the action matches your intended support workflow.
- Configure channels and storefront assignment. Connect the support channels your customers actually use, associate each with the appropriate store where available, and test ticket identification and routing before adding more channels.
Platform-specific details
1. Gorgias: Shopify, BigCommerce, and Magento 2
Gorgias’s Shopify documentation describes customer profiles and order history in the support sidebar, along with Shopify-specific features such as customer-note syncing, profile matching, and discount-code generation. Connecting Shopify requires authorization by the store owner or an admin. The initial customer and order import runs in the background.
Gorgias also lists BigCommerce and Magento 2 connections that expose customer and order data. Its launch guide distinguishes those integrations from Shopify: certain functions, including the AI Agent feature described there, are only available for Shopify stores. Do not infer that Shopify’s complete feature set, actions, or data fields are available on the other platforms.
2. Zendesk: Shopify
Zendesk documents Shopify order information in Support and Chat, and support-app actions that include refunds and cancellations. Its guide says Zendesk Support customers also need Chat to use this integration, and it supports connecting multiple storefronts.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That product prerequisite matters when planning deployment: having Zendesk Support alone does not meet the requirement stated in the Shopify integration guide. Confirm the current Zendesk documentation and account configuration before authorizing the store.
Permissions and setup troubleshooting
Authorization failures are often an access issue, but permission requirements are integration-specific. Zendesk’s troubleshooting guidance says insufficient Shopify permissions can prevent its setup. For the Zendesk connection, it identifies access for Orders, Customers, Apps and channels, Online store themes, and Manage settings.

This list is Zendesk-specific; it is not a universal Shopify permission checklist for other vendors.

How to assess workflow fit before connecting
Compatibility is only the first check. A useful evaluation is whether the integration exposes the information agents need and supports the actions the business actually permits.
- Exact pairing: Confirm the store platform, help desk product, and any required companion product or plan.
- Customer and order context: Identify which profile, order, and shipping information is shown in tickets; do not assume the same fields appear across integrations.
- Actions: Establish whether agents can issue refunds, cancel orders, or perform other store operations, and which team members should have access.
- Storefronts: Check whether multiple stores can connect and how tickets are associated with each one.
- Channels: List the channels customers use and determine how each is connected and tied to the correct store.
- Authorization: Identify who must approve access and which platform permissions the specific integration requests.
- Initial sync: Find out whether customer or order history imports in the background and allow for that process before judging whether records are missing.
What the published claims do—and do not—establish
Gorgias’s vendor marketing page states that “60% of support” can be automated and that online revenue can lift “up to 32%.” The page, as described in the available information, does not identify the study method, sample, date, or independent validation. These are vendor claims, not typical outcomes or a verified forecast for a particular store.
The specific connection documentation is more useful for planning setup: it describes the platforms, context, permissions, and some available functions. It does not provide a complete cross-vendor field comparison or current prices. Vendor interfaces, plans, and integration capabilities can change, so consult each provider’s current official setup and plan information when configuring an account.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does connecting a store automatically connect live chat, email, and social channels?
No. Store data integration and support-channel configuration are separate decisions. Connect the channels your customers use and associate them with the appropriate storefront where the help desk supports that setup.
Can Gorgias connect to an ecommerce platform other than Shopify?
Gorgias lists BigCommerce and Magento 2 connections that expose customer and order data. Its documentation distinguishes Shopify-specific capabilities, so Shopify functions should not be presumed available on those platforms.
Can Zendesk agents issue Shopify refunds or cancellations?
Zendesk’s Shopify integration documentation describes refunds and cancellations through its support app. The guide also says Zendesk Support customers need Chat to use that integration.
How long does a store integration take to sync?
There is no universal time established here. Gorgias says its Shopify customer-profile and order-history import runs in the background and can take time depending on store size.
