Eclipse Theia is a framework for building or adapting cloud and desktop IDEs and developer tools—not, by itself, a ready-to-launch IDE. The ready-to-use application built with the framework is called Theia IDE. That distinction matters: use Theia IDE if you want an editor to work in, and consider the Theia Platform if you need to create a tailored development environment or domain-specific tool.
What Eclipse Theia is—and what it is not
The Eclipse Foundation project includes both the Eclipse Theia Platform and Theia IDE. The Platform is an extensible framework built with TypeScript, CSS, and HTML. Product teams use it to assemble and customize cloud or desktop IDEs and other tools. Theia IDE is an application built on that framework that users can run directly. The project describes this distinction in its Platform documentation.
The Platform provides reusable building blocks, such as a file explorer, Git support, and a code editor. Adopters choose which components their product needs, then extend or adapt them. It is therefore better understood as a foundation for making a product than as an editor that users install and start coding in. The project’s goals and repository overview likewise emphasize serving adopters who build products.
How Theia runs on desktop and in the browser
Theia separates its frontend from its backend. The frontend renders the user interface in a browser context; the backend runs on Node.js. They communicate using JSON-RPC over WebSockets or REST APIs over HTTP, according to the project’s architecture documentation.

For a desktop product built with Electron, both processes run locally. For a remote or browser-based setup, the backend can run on a remote host while the frontend runs in the browser. This lets product teams target desktop and cloud deployments from a related codebase, though it does not mean every deployment is identical or requires no product-specific work. The project lists both local desktop and remote cloud variants as priorities in its goals.
Ways to customize a Theia product
The extension mechanism to choose depends on how deeply you need to change the product and where the code must run. The project’s extension guide describes four options:

These mechanisms serve different purposes; runtime installation is not the same as compile-time integration. If a product needs custom views, services, or behavior woven into its architecture, Theia extensions are the more direct route described by the project. If you want to reuse an existing extension, first check whether its required API and behavior are supported in your target product.
Does Eclipse Theia support VS Code extensions?
Yes, Theia supports VS Code extensions through a defined API, and Open VSX is its default extension marketplace. Support does not guarantee that every VS Code extension or API behaves identically in every Theia-based product. The project provides an API coverage report and extension guidance to help assess compatibility.

Organizations can configure a custom registry or proxy with VSX_REGISTRY_URL. The project also documents using the OVSX router to target multiple registries. Those choices affect where extensions are sourced; they do not by themselves establish that an extension is compatible.
How Theia differs from VS Code and classic Eclipse IDE
Theia is not a VS Code fork. The project says it is independently developed, with a modular architecture, while incorporating some VS Code components such as Monaco and offering compatibility interfaces. The practical distinction is purpose: VS Code is a ready-to-use editor, while the Theia Platform is for building a customized IDE or tool. Theia IDE, in turn, is the ready-to-use application in the Theia project.

Classic Eclipse IDE is a separate comparison. The project FAQ says it has a different architecture and plugin model from Theia; see the official FAQ. Before choosing between these options, weigh the differences that affect the product you intend to ship:
- Product purpose: choose a ready-made editor when it meets your needs; choose a framework when you need to create a differentiated product or domain-specific environment.
- Customization: determine whether available extensions are enough or whether your product needs compile-time integration and deeper changes.
- Extension requirements: check the APIs and individual extensions your users depend on rather than assuming broad compatibility.
- Deployment: decide whether you need a local desktop app, a browser frontend connected to a remote backend, or both.
- Engineering ownership: a framework gives product teams more control, but they must select components, assemble the product, and maintain it.
What adopting Theia entails
Theia is most suitable when an organization has a concrete reason to own and tailor its development environment—for example, to deliver a specialized tool or a controlled cloud or desktop experience. It is a less direct choice if the goal is simply to obtain a conventional editor: Theia IDE is the ready-to-use option within the project, and other existing editors may be a better fit depending on requirements.

Building on the Platform means taking responsibility for product decisions and ongoing engineering, not merely enabling a setting in an existing editor. The project says professional support, consulting, and implementation services are available for organizations building products with Theia; availability of services does not remove the need to define the product’s technical and maintenance requirements.
License and current release
The project repository lists the Eclipse Public License 2.0 (EPL-2.0) and a secondary GNU General Public License version 2 with the GNU Classpath Exception. For a product, review the license and NOTICE files for the exact dependencies and distribution you plan to ship rather than treating a project-level license summary as a complete compliance assessment. The Eclipse Foundation project page listed Theia 1.76.0, dated September 24, 2026, as the newest release shown when checked on October 4, 2026. Releases change, so confirm the Eclipse Foundation project page for the latest version before planning against a specific release.
