Choose an Echo Dot if you want Alexa in a compact, audio-first speaker for music, alarms, timers, and voice-controlled smart-home commands. Choose an Echo Show if you will use a screen for video, visual information, video calls, or on-device smart-home controls. “Echo Show” is a product family, so this comparison uses the Echo Show 8 as the practical mid-size example; the right choice depends on whether a screen earns its space in your room.
At a glance: Echo Show or Echo Dot?
| Choose | Best fit | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Echo Dot | A bedside table, office, bathroom, or another room where you mainly want Alexa by voice. | A compact smart speaker for audio and voice commands. Amazon’s Canadian listing for the Echo Dot (5th Gen, 2022 release) specifies one 1.73-inch front-firing speaker. Amazon Canada’s product listing |
| Echo Show 8 (2025 release) | A kitchen counter or other spot where you want to glance at a display, watch video, make video calls, or control smart-home devices on the device. | An 8-inch HD touch screen, stereo speakers, a passive bass radiator, and a built-in smart-home hub, according to Amazon’s Echo buying guide. The 2025 model’s camera is listed as 13 megapixels in Amazon’s Echo Show 8 and Show 11 guide. |
| Larger Echo Show | A room or use case where a bigger display matters more than a compact footprint. | Screen sizes and specifications vary by model. For example, Amazon lists the Echo Show 21 (2024) with a 21.4-inch, 1080p touch display. Amazon’s Echo Show specifications |
There is no evidence here to declare one device the better-sounding speaker based on listening tests. The specifications describe different hardware, not a subjective winner.
What changes when you add a screen?
Echo Dot: Alexa without a display
The Dot is suited to people who want to ask Alexa for music, set alarms and timers, or issue voice commands without needing to look at the device. Amazon positions it for bedrooms, offices, and bathrooms, and for adding Echo devices to multiple rooms. That makes it a straightforward choice when you want voice access in a smaller or secondary space. Amazon’s Echo buying guide
Echo Show: visual information and direct controls
A Show adds a screen for visual information, video, video calls, and smart-home controls you can tap on the device. Those capabilities are useful only if you expect to look at or interact with the display; if you will use Alexa almost entirely by voice, the Dot avoids paying for and making room for a screen.

Consider viewing distance and counter or shelf space, and choose a specific model rather than treating “Echo Show” as one fixed device.

Smart-home compatibility: check the exact device and protocol
Amazon’s Matter documentation lists Echo Dot (2nd Gen and newer), Echo Show 8, and Echo Show 11 among Matter-enabled devices, and identifies supported categories including lighting and smart plugs. Amazon’s Matter support documentation Matter support should not be confused with having a built-in smart-home hub: Amazon specifically describes the Show 8 as having a hub compatible with Zigbee, Matter, and Thread. The Dot’s Matter listing does not establish that it includes the same hub capabilities.

Which Echo should you buy?
Choose Echo Dot if you want Alexa in another room
- You mainly want music, alarms, timers, and spoken smart-home commands.
- You prefer a compact device for a bedside table, office, bathroom, or secondary room.
- You do not need a screen for video, visual information, calls, or touch controls.
Choose Echo Show 8 if the screen has a clear job
- You will use the display to view information, watch video, make video calls, or control smart-home devices directly.
- You have a suitable spot for an 8-inch display and want the Show 8’s specifically described built-in hub.
- You want camera-dependent features and are comfortable managing the camera controls and their effects.
Consider a larger Show for a larger viewing area
If an 8-inch screen is too small for the intended spot, compare the dimensions and specifications of larger Show models. Amazon’s Echo Show family spans very different screen sizes, including the 21.4-inch Echo Show 21 (2024); do not assume features or hub capabilities are identical across the line. Check the exact model’s specifications before buying.
Price, availability, and software vary
No reliable current price comparison is established here. Prices, stock, and product variants depend on the marketplace, so check your local Amazon store for the exact model and current listing. The Dot hardware figure cited above comes from Amazon Canada’s listing for the Echo Dot (5th Gen, 2022 release), and should not be taken as confirmation of availability in another region.
Amazon’s 2025 guide discusses Alexa+ features for the Show 8 and Show 11 and says more updates are forthcoming over time. Availability and completeness can vary as experiences roll out; confirm current software availability in your region rather than assuming every feature is active for every user.
