This is a buildable experimental hardware project, not a ready-to-buy IMU or a proven navigation instrument. Its custom board combines 32 ICM-42688-P six-axis sensors with an ICE40UP5K FPGA, letting a developer read the sensors together or try simple averaging. Reproducing it means working from the project’s PCB and firmware files and handling a custom board; the Raspberry Pi Pico breakout is for bring-up, not a substitute for the array.

What the IMU array is designed to do

Instead of relying on one inertial sensor, the project places 32 MEMS IMUs on one board and connects them to an FPGA over SPI. The idea is to collect readings from multiple sensors and process them together. The Hackaday feature published October 2, 2024 describes the array as a module for a larger system; its author mentions a geophone as a target application.

That makes the board a platform for experimentation, rather than a standalone consumer module. The concept may invite investigations into sensitivity or drift, but neither the feature nor the project repository establishes a measured accuracy, precision, or drift improvement for this particular board.

What is on the board, and what the code does

The maintainer’s IMU_Array repository identifies the sensor board as a six-layer PCB carrying 32 ICM-42688-P sensors and an ICE40UP5K FPGA. It separates the sensor board, a Pico breakout, FPGA code, and MicroPython code into project directories. The repository also provides Gerber, BOM, and CPL manufacturing files.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Reading sensors is not the same as sensor fusion

The maintainer characterizes the implementation as early-stage: it can send readings from all 32 sensors or produce a simple average, accounting for the four sensor rotations. The described averaging is simple accumulation, not a claim of sophisticated fusion, calibration, or navigation processing. Convenience functions for changing sensor settings were limited in the documented code.

Reported sampling and output figures

The repository records a 200 Hz sampling configuration. In updates dated August 4, 2024, the maintainer reported resolving an FPGA-side SPI clock issue to run SPI at 20 MHz, and separately reported overclocking a Pico to 250 MHz to send data from 32 IMUs to a PC at 100 Hz. These are maintainer-reported project details from 2024, not independent measurements or guarantees for later revisions; the sampling configuration and PC output rate describe different aspects of the setup.

What you need to reproduce the project

  • Custom sensor PCB: Use the repository’s board design and manufacturing files to have the six-layer array made. The project is not presented as a complete retail kit.
  • Assembly capability: The maintainer notes that the rear side has 0402 decoupling capacitors. These can be hand-soldered if assembling only the top side, but their small size makes assembly a practical challenge.
  • Care with the connector: The repository warns that the narrow FPC connector has a fragile plastic latch. Handle it gently during assembly and repeated connection.
  • Bring-up controller: The separate breakout supports a Raspberry Pi Pico, and the repository includes MicroPython code for it. This is intended to help test and bring up the array, not replace the 32-sensor board.
  • FPGA and firmware work: The repository provides Verilog and MicroPython project code. Expect to work with experimental code rather than a polished interface with extensive configuration helpers.

Approach What it is suited to Trade-off
32-sensor array Exploring coordinated readings from many IMUs, FPGA-based acquisition, and eventual integration as a module in a larger system. Requires a custom six-layer PCB, FPGA and firmware setup, and careful assembly.
Pico breakout Bring-up and testing with the project’s Raspberry Pi Pico and MicroPython support. It is a support board for testing; it does not provide the full 32-sensor array.

This comparison is about project scope and build effort, not comparative performance: the available project sources do not report a benchmark between the two approaches.

What the project can—and cannot—show

The repository gives a technically concrete starting point: board files, FPGA code, Pico support, and a description of reading or simply averaging the sensors. That is enough to explore acquisition and processing on a multi-IMU board. It is not evidence that combining the sensors automatically yields a more accurate IMU. The project materials do not provide independent test results or numerical drift or accuracy gains, so those outcomes remain questions for a builder to measure in their own setup.
