Buy an EA game from the store that lists the edition you want and whose account, launcher, price, and refund terms suit you. An EA app purchase does not transfer to Steam, and buying through Steam does not necessarily remove EA account or software requirements. Check the specific game listing before checkout.
What is the difference between the EA app and Steam?
The EA app is EA’s storefront and client for buying, downloading, and managing EA games. Steam is a separate storefront and client. A game purchase is tied to the store and account path used to buy it: EA says an EA-app purchase cannot be transferred to Steam. Do not assume that a license, DLC, or other entitlement bought in one store will appear in the other. EA explains its Steam and EA app purchase handling.
For a specific game, the useful comparison is not simply which client is better. It is whether each store carries the same edition, what that edition costs in your region now, which accounts and software the game requires, how add-ons work, and which store handles a refund.
Should you buy an EA game on the EA app or Steam?

Choose the EA app if the specific edition is available there and you prefer buying and organizing it in EA’s client. Choose Steam if the edition is available there and you prefer Steam’s store and library. If price is the deciding factor, compare the same edition in the same region on the day you buy it.

Does Steam still require an EA Account or the EA app?
Often, yes for an EA Account: EA Help says, “You need an EA Account to play most EA games, even if you’re playing through a different platform like Steam.” EA also says the first time you play an EA game on Steam, you can link your Steam account in the EA Account’s Connected Accounts settings. See EA’s account setup and linking guidance.
An EA Account requirement does not by itself establish that every game needs the EA app to launch. EA directs players to the individual Steam store page to check whether the app is required. Check the listing for the exact title before purchase rather than expecting one launcher flow to apply to all EA games.

Where will the game appear, and can you move it between libraries?
Games bought through the EA app are automatically added to the EA Library, where you can install and manage them. EA says games bought outside the app—including physical copies—can also be added in supported cases. That does not mean an outside purchase becomes a Steam purchase or that every entitlement is available in both libraries. EA’s EA app guide explains library management, and its download and play guidance states that EA-app purchases cannot be transferred to Steam.
If you buy through Steam, Steam is the store that processed the purchase. The exact launch experience depends on the game; consult its Steam page for required software. Before buying DLC or an edition upgrade, confirm that it matches the base game’s storefront and account path.

How do refunds work on each store?
Refund requests go to the store that processed the purchase. Policies have eligibility conditions and can change; check the live terms for your product and location. EA’s refund policy directs Steam purchasers to Steam, while Steam’s refund page describes Valve’s rules.
EA app and EA.com purchases
For eligible full EA PC or Mac game downloads, EA’s stated standard windows are: within 24 hours after first launch; within 14 days of purchase if the game has not been launched; or any time before release for a preorder. For a new EA game bought within its first 30 days after release that cannot be played for technical reasons controlled by EA, the stated window is 72 hours after first launch. Eligibility exclusions apply. EA’s stated policy does not cover separately purchased DLC or in-game currency.

Steam purchases
Steam’s standard offer applies to game refund requests made within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Valve lists distinct terms for other products and circumstances, including DLC, bundles, preorders, in-game purchases, and hardware. It also allows customers to submit requests outside the described rules; that is not a guarantee of approval. Consumer protections and outcomes can vary by jurisdiction and product, so check the current policy and contact the store that took payment.

How to make the choice before checkout
- Find the exact edition. Open the EA store and Steam listing and confirm that each offers the game, edition, and included content you want.
- Compare the same offer. Check current regional prices, currency, payment options, and purchase terms at checkout. Do not compare a standard edition in one store with a bundle in the other.
- Check account and software requirements. Read the Steam page for EA app requirements. Expect most EA games to require an EA Account, including when bought on Steam.
- Confirm add-on compatibility. Verify DLC, upgrades, and other entitlements for the exact base game and storefront; do not count on cross-store transfer.
- Review the refund policy. Use the policy of the store that will process payment, including any product-specific exceptions.
- Buy from an authorized seller. EA warns it may be unable to help if a key or code bought from an unauthorized party is disabled. EA’s guidance on buying games and digital content discusses trusted retailers.
