e-pens Mobile Notes was a paper-based digital pen system that captured handwriting through a receiver clipped to the page, then offered software to convert those strokes into editable text. It addressed a useful need, but historical reviews found uneven setup and recognition results. The available evidence is from 2009 and 2013; it does not establish whether the device, software, or support is available today.
How e-pens Mobile Notes worked
The system did not replace paper with a screen. You wrote on ordinary paper with the digital stylus while a small receiver attached to the page recorded the pen’s movement. The receiver could store captured notes for transfer later or send them to a computer. On the computer, Mobile Notes Note Manager handled the notes, while MyScript handwriting-recognition software could convert handwriting into editable text for correction and export to a word processor such as Microsoft Word. IT Pro’s 2009 review and Personal Computer World’s 2009 review describe this workflow.
That process has two distinct results: a digital record of the handwritten strokes, and text produced by handwriting recognition. Capturing a page did not mean the software had transcribed it accurately; conversion and proofreading were separate steps.
What the reviews found
IT Pro review (2009)
Richard Goodwin’s review, published on 29 June 2009, found the concept promising but encountered installation trouble, a requirement to make Internet Explorer the default browser, and difficulty switching between pen and mouse modes. In that review’s testing, handwriting recognition was estimated at about 60%, with correction needed after export. Goodwin found mobile capture more useful than connected mode, which he could not fully test because of the mode-switching issue. These are findings from that dated review, not a general accuracy benchmark.

Personal Computer World review (2009)
A separate review described setup as easy, noted that users could train the handwriting recognition and proofread its output, and found the pen less solid-feeling than a conventional pen. Its extracted specifications list a receiver capacity of up to 50 A4 pages and Windows XP/Vista support. Those are historical details reported in 2009, not assurances about present-day storage, software, or compatibility.
TechRadar review of Mobile Notes Pro (2013)
Matt Hanson’s review covered the later Mobile Notes Pro kit, described as including a pen, batteries, ink cartridges, and a base unit for transferring notes to a PC. The review reported that uploaded handwritten strokes appeared as written, but its OCR plug-in stopped responding in a Windows 8 test. It also characterized the included software as basic. Does e-pens Mobile Notes convert handwritten notes into editable text?
Yes, that was part of its intended computer-based workflow: captured strokes could be processed by handwriting-recognition software, edited, and exported. The qualification is important: conversion quality and reliability were not guaranteed. IT Pro estimated about 60% recognition accuracy in its own 2009 test, while the Personal Computer World review discussed training and proofreading; TechRadar later reported an OCR plug-in failure in its Windows 8 test. These reviews differ in their impressions and test conditions, so they do not establish a single dependable accuracy rate.
Compatibility and buying considerations
The compatibility information is dated and mixed: Personal Computer World listed Windows XP and Vista in 2009, and TechRadar reported an OCR plug-in problem under Windows 8 in 2013. The available reviews do not establish support for current Windows or macOS versions, working software downloads, vendor support, or current product availability.

If considering a listing for the e-pens Mobile Notes digital pen, verify the exact model and that the package includes the receiver and the necessary software media or obtainable downloads. Confirm that the receiver connects as expected and that the note-management and recognition software run on the computer you intend to use. A listing alone does not establish that these parts are complete or compatible.

e-pens Mobile Notes was an inventive way to keep writing on paper while creating a digital record and attempting text conversion. The receiver-based capture workflow was distinct from the recognition step, and the historical reviews show why that distinction mattered: the strokes could be captured even when transcription needed correction or the OCR software failed. It is best understood as a legacy product with an appealing idea and documented software friction, not as a currently verified recommendation.
