For long stretches of mostly static text, E Ink is often the more paper-like choice, especially in bright ambient light. OLED is usually the better all-purpose phone screen when reading includes color, video, animation, or fast scrolling. Neither is best for everyone, and a small study comparing the screens does not establish that either prevents eye disease or causes lasting harm.
How E Ink and OLED differ for reading
E Ink is a reflective display: it uses ambient light to make text visible, much like paper. That can make it comfortable to read in bright surroundings. Many E Ink devices also have a separate front light for dim conditions, so an E Ink screen is not necessarily unlit in the dark. Check the device’s lighting controls and whether its front light is on. E Ink’s technology overview and its explanation of front lighting describe these distinctions.
OLED is an emissive display: its pixels produce light. It generally suits color-rich pages, images, video, and fluid interface movement better. E Ink’s slower refresh behavior can be a practical drawback when scrolling quickly or using animated content; the exact experience depends on the device and its refresh settings. These are broad category tradeoffs, not measurements from a head-to-head test of two specific current phones. The study discussed below also does not establish that one display is universally more comfortable.

What the eye-comfort study found—and what it cannot show
A prospective randomized controlled study, “Effects on the Ocular Surface from Reading on Different Smartphone Screens”, assigned 119 volunteers to one of four reading conditions: light plus OLED, light plus E Ink, dark plus OLED, or dark plus E Ink. The researchers assessed ocular-surface measures before and after a reading task. The authors reported more ocular-surface disturbance and subjective discomfort in the OLED groups, and concluded that E Ink minimized those outcomes in both lighting environments. The PubMed record identifies the paper, published in 2020.
Interpret that result narrowly: 119 is the study’s sample size, not an estimate of how all readers respond. The experiment measured outcomes around a reading task; it does not prove permanent OLED damage, establish long-term health effects, or guarantee that you will feel better using E Ink. The paper also notes that a two-hour reading task may be too short to produce clinically significant changes in some dry-eye indicators. It is evidence about those participants, conditions, and measured outcomes—not a verdict that either display is medically safe or unsafe.

Can a phone-sized E Ink device replace a phone?
A phone-sized E Ink reader may suit someone who mainly reads text and accepts less fluid handling of motion and mixed media. BOOX describes its Palma as a mobile ePaper device for ebooks and third-party apps, with a Carta 1200 display rated at 300 PPI, an integrated light for low-light use, and a full-refresh control. Those are manufacturer specifications; check the current model and connectivity details before treating it as a smartphone replacement. It is best understood as a reading-first option rather than an automatic substitute for a general-purpose phone.

How to choose
- Choose E Ink if your priority is extended reading of static text, particularly in bright ambient light, and you can accept tradeoffs in scrolling, motion, and color.
- Choose OLED if you want one device for reading plus video, images, color-rich content, and responsive apps.
- If screen comfort is your deciding factor, treat the study as limited evidence rather than a personal guarantee; your comfort can differ from the study’s group results.
- For either display, consider the actual lighting where you read and adjust the screen’s brightness or front light to suit the setting.
