There is no universal winner: an e-bike may suit a commute better if the route is practical and its full ownership cost works for you; public transit may be preferable when fares, service, or bike storage make it the easier option. Compare the actual door-to-door journey and costs over the same period, using your commute frequency and local conditions.
How to compare an e-bike with public transit for your commute
Compare three options where they are available: an e-bike you own, public transit, and a shared e-bike. The right choice depends on your route, transit service, how often you commute, and whether you can store and secure a bike. UK evidence does not provide a matched e-bike-versus-transit comparison for an unspecified route, so national averages and survey responses cannot determine which will work better for you.
- Set a common period. Choose a month or year and use the same number of commuting days for each option.
- Calculate complete costs. Include fares or passes for transit. For an owned e-bike, include purchase cost spread across an explicit ownership period, maintenance, security, and other locally applicable expenses. For a shared e-bike, use the local scheme’s current tariff.
- Measure door-to-door time. Include the whole trip in each direction, not just time aboard a train or moving on a bike.
- Check the practical fit. Consider service schedules and transfers, cycling-route conditions, and where you will park and secure a bike.
Which option costs less?
There is no general break-even price or savings figure established by the available UK evidence. Your result depends on local fares, commute frequency, the e-bike’s purchase cost, how long you keep it, and ongoing costs. A higher upfront purchase price can be a barrier: the Department for Transport’s 2024 rapid evidence assessment identifies e-cycle purchase cost as an obstacle, but does not offer a universal fare-versus-ownership total. Read the Department for Transport’s e-cycles evidence assessment.
In the Department for Transport’s 2020 user study, 22% of one-off and regular e-bike scheme users reported lower travel costs as an improvement. That is what respondents said about their experience, not a controlled comparison with transit fares or a promise that a particular commuter will save money. The study was published before the COVID-19 crisis. See the Future of Transport: User Study.

Which is faster door to door?
Time the whole journey on your actual route. For transit, count walking to the stop or station, waiting, transfers, the ride, and the last leg to work. For an e-bike, count riding, any access at either end, and time spent parking and securing it.
For context only, the Department for Transport reported average commute durations in Great Britain in 2024 of 40 minutes by bus or coach and 64 minutes by National Rail. These are national mode averages, not estimates for a specific route, not a direct comparison with e-bikes, and not necessarily round-trip times. In the 2020 user study, 28% of one-off and regular e-bike scheme users reported improved journey time. This self-reported benefit does not establish that an e-bike is faster than transit on a route-matched test.
Which is more convenient?
Transit convenience depends on whether its schedule and stops fit your working day and whether the trip requires transfers. An e-bike can offer a direct route and more flexibility, but depends on a rideable route and a place to park and secure the bike. In the 2020 Department for Transport study, 23% of scheme users reported convenience as an improvement and 17% reported easier parking. These are respondents’ reports, not outcomes guaranteed for every commute.

Storage and security can affect whether owning an e-bike is practical. In an England survey conducted in January and February 2021, 52% agreed e-bikes are too expensive, 54% agreed they are likely to be stolen, and around one in three agreed they would struggle to store one where they live. These figures measure attitudes and perceived difficulty, not actual theft rates or conditions for every household. See the National Travel Attitudes Study: Wave 5.
Could an e-bike replace part of your transit commute?
It need not be an all-or-nothing choice. The Department for Transport’s 2024 evidence assessment reports evidence that some e-cycle trips shift from public transport, while describing the broader evidence about e-cycle users as limited. A shared e-bike may also be worth comparing where a local scheme operates. Neither finding means e-bikes always replace transit; the useful question is whether a specific journey and scheme fit your needs. Read the Department for Transport assessment.

What the UK figures can—and cannot—tell you
The figures above cover different populations and periods: the user study was published in 2020 and predates the COVID-19 crisis; the attitudes survey was conducted in England in early 2021; the evidence assessment was published in October 2024; and commute averages describe Great Britain in 2024. They provide context, not current local fare, service, or product-price information. Check those locally before making a cost or time decision.
