Dynamips is GNS3’s emulator for older Cisco router platforms. It can run compatible, unmodified Cisco IOS images, but it is a legacy option—not a general emulator for current Cisco hardware. You need an IOS image you are entitled to use, and each router instance needs a suitable Idle-PC value to avoid consuming an entire CPU core or thread.
What Dynamips does in GNS3
Dynamips emulates older Cisco router hardware so GNS3 can run compatible IOS images. It is one of GNS3’s emulation engines, not the whole GNS3 environment. GNS3 says Dynamips can also provide basic switching with an EtherSwitch module; that does not make it a replacement for modern switch emulation. GNS3’s Dynamips documentation describes its role and supported setup.
GNS3’s guidance lists older families including c1700, c2600, c3600, c3725, c3745, and c7200. It recommends c3640, c3660, c3725, c3745, and c7200 images as stable choices when configured with the appropriate RAM and Idle-PC value. These are legacy platform recommendations, not an indication that Cisco currently sells or supports all of them. See GNS3’s platform and image guidance.
Can Dynamips run Cisco IOS images?
Yes, if the image is compatible with Dynamips and you have the right to use it. GNS3 does not supply Cisco IOS images. Its FAQ says the Cisco images currently downloadable for Dynamips users with a Cisco service contract are c7200 images, not c7200p images. If you own a physical router, GNS3 says you can copy that device’s image into GNS3. Check Cisco’s applicable terms and your own entitlement before using an image; GNS3 also warns users not to request or share IOS images through its community. GNS3 FAQ: Where can I get IOS images?

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
There is an important distinction between what the emulator’s older platform guidance covers and what Cisco currently makes available for download. GNS3 says c7200 is the only platform in this older Dynamips family set that gets newer IOS 15 images; its other listed platforms are end-of-life and limited to IOS 12.4. Its separate availability guidance says c7200 is the only currently downloadable Dynamips-compatible Cisco image for users with a service contract. How to set up a Dynamips router and reduce CPU use
- Obtain a compatible IOS image through a lawful channel. GNS3 does not provide images. Confirm the platform and image are appropriate for your entitlement and lab.
- Import the image in GNS3 and select its platform. Use the matching router family, rather than assuming one image works across all Dynamips platforms.
- Set the router’s RAM and network adapters. Follow the image’s minimum RAM requirements and configure only adapters supported by the selected platform. GNS3’s image guidance notes that the correct RAM and platform configuration matter.
- Run GNS3’s Idle-PC finder for the image. A Dynamips router without a suitable Idle-PC value can use 100% of one CPU core or thread. The right value varies by image and device, so do not copy a supposedly universal number.
GNS3 provides additional Dynamips setup and Idle-PC guidance. If local GNS3 components fail to connect, local antivirus or firewall rules may be blocking them; review your security software’s configuration.

Which emulator should I use?
| Need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A basic lab for an older Cisco router, with a compatible IOS image already available to you | Dynamips | It runs compatible, unmodified IOS images on legacy Cisco router platforms. |
| Newer Cisco releases or broader appliance choices | QEMU appliances, commonly through the GNS3 VM workflow | GNS3 points users to QEMU-based Cisco virtual appliances such as IOSv and IOSvL2 for current virtual-image options. Access and licensing conditions apply. |
| A larger or multi-vendor topology | Usually the GNS3 VM and suitable QEMU appliances | This path expands appliance choices beyond the legacy IOS images and few included devices available through local setups on Windows and macOS. |
For Windows and macOS, GNS3’s local-server documentation says local appliances are limited to legacy Dynamips IOS images and a few included devices; using the GNS3 VM expands the available appliances. On Linux, GNS3 says IOS images, QEMU/KVM virtual machines, and Docker containers can run natively. The right path depends on the platform and appliances your lab needs. GNS3 VM documentation; GNS3 installation guidance.
GNS3 documents Cisco virtual appliances through its VIRL/Cisco virtual-image pathway and recommends current Cisco virtual images for stable, updated Cisco images. Those images have separate access and licensing terms, so check current Cisco and GNS3 requirements before building a lab around them. GNS3’s image FAQ.
