Evaluate a Dynamics 365 partner by the evidence behind its delivery and support—not by its Microsoft badge or sales pitch. Ask for comparable project references, confirm the people who will actually do the work, inspect the implementation and data plans, and get post-go-live service commitments in writing. Microsoft credentials can help you shortlist firms, but they do not guarantee a successful project or establish the support terms a particular partner will provide.

What should I look for in a Dynamics 365 partner?

Look for proof that the partner can deliver the applications and business processes you need, with a team and support model suited to your organization. Microsoft describes partners as helping with assessment, architecture, implementation, training, ongoing support, and optimization. Evaluate the candidate across that full lifecycle rather than treating implementation as the only deliverable.

A useful evaluation separates what a firm says it can do from what it can substantiate. A large customer list, broad service catalog, or designation may be a reason to investigate further. The decision should turn on relevant completed work, the proposed team’s qualifications and availability, a credible project method, and explicit ownership after launch.

Before meetings, write down the business processes, Dynamics 365 applications, locations, legal entities, integrations, reporting needs, and internal resources that matter to your project. You do not need a finished specification to start evaluating partners. You do need enough context to tell whether an example is genuinely comparable or merely a nearby logo on a slide.

How do I verify a partner’s comparable experience?

Ask for examples that resemble your project in more than industry label. The strongest evidence covers the relevant Dynamics 365 applications and process areas, organizational scale, legal-entity structure, geographic footprint, transaction complexity, and integration landscape.

Request a short, specific account of each relevant implementation: which applications and processes were in scope, what the partner delivered, where the project is now, and which proposed team members participated. Ask to speak with customers whose projects have at least passed stabilization. A reference who can discuss only the sales process—or only the go-live announcement—may not be able to validate delivery quality or ongoing support.

Confirm that the examples are comparable to your needs rather than accepting a general claim such as “we work with Microsoft” or “we have ERP experience.” A partner may have extensive work in one Dynamics 365 workload and little relevant experience in another. Likewise, a project in the same sector may differ substantially in entities, locations, integrations, or operating complexity.

Questions for customer references

  • Which applications, modules, and business processes did the partner deliver?
  • How similar were the project’s scale, legal entities, locations, and integrations to ours?
  • Did the project meet the agreed scope and manage changes transparently?
  • How did the partner handle data migration, testing, training, and defects?
  • Who remained involved after go-live, and how responsive was support?
  • What would you clarify or put in writing if you were hiring the partner again?

Speak with more than one reference when possible, and ask the same core questions of each. That makes differences in experience easier to identify. Verify that the people being proposed for your project—not just the sales organization or a separate delivery group—worked on the cited engagements.

How can I check who will actually work on the project?

Ask the partner to name the people accountable for project leadership, functional work, technical architecture, migration, integrations, testing, training, and support. A proposal should show roles and responsibilities, not just a company-wide inventory of skills.

For each key person, ask what decisions they own, how much of their time is committed, and whether they will remain involved through go-live and stabilization. Ask who takes over if someone leaves or becomes unavailable, and how a replacement would be brought up to speed. Clarify who owns the account after implementation and whether the support contact is part of the proposed delivery team or a separate group.

These questions matter because a firm’s experience is not automatically the experience of your assigned team. A strong candidate can explain how the proposed resources relate to the references it provides and can make account ownership explicit. If named resources are not yet fixed, ask when they will be confirmed and what protections apply if the eventual team differs from the one presented during selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should the implementation methodology include?

Require a written approach that covers the project from discovery through go-live and hypercare. It should explain how the partner will understand your processes, identify fit and gaps, design the solution, configure or customize it, move data, build integrations, test, support user acceptance, train users, deploy, and stabilize the system.

Ask how the partner decides among standard functionality, configuration, customization, and a change to the business process. The answer should connect those choices to business needs, not default to extensive customization or promise that every existing process can be reproduced unchanged. Request a way to review design decisions and their implications before they become commitments.

Project governance deserves the same scrutiny as technical detail. The plan should identify how decisions are recorded, how dependencies and risks are tracked, who approves scope changes, how defects are prioritized, and how budget or timeline variance is escalated. Ask what information you will receive, how often, and from whom. A method that sounds polished but leaves decision rights or change control vague is not enough.

Review the assumptions behind the proposed scope and price. Ask what work is included, what depends on your staff or third parties, what is excluded, and how a change request is estimated and approved. A low headline price can be difficult to compare if it leaves discovery, data cleanup, integration work, testing, or training undefined. Compare proposals by scope and assumptions, not just by their first total.

How do I assess data, integration, testing, and adoption capability?

Ask the partner to show how it will manage data quality and migration, design integrations and reporting, test the solution, and prepare people to use it. These are core delivery concerns, not optional extras to discuss after the main proposal is agreed.

For migration, request an explanation of how data will be cleaned, mapped, moved, validated, and reconciled. Ask who owns each step, what business users must decide or supply, and how unresolved data issues will be surfaced. The partner should explain how it will confirm that migrated information is suitable for the processes that depend on it, rather than treating “data loaded” as proof of success.

For integrations, ask for the proposed architecture and a list of the systems and data flows the partner understands to be in scope. Find out how dependencies, failures, and ownership will be handled. For reporting, ask how reporting needs and the Power BI plan fit into solution design and validation. These conversations can expose assumptions that a high-level implementation description hides.

Ask to review the testing strategy, including how the partner will organize tests, manage defects, support user acceptance, and confirm readiness for deployment. Clarify which responsibilities belong to the partner and which belong to your employees or other providers. Then examine the training and adoption plan: who receives role-based training, how it is delivered, and how the partner expects users and managers to prepare for the change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weak migration planning, limited testing, and insufficient training can cause cost, schedule, and adoption problems. Do not accept a generic assurance that the partner has “a proven process.” Ask for enough detail to see the work, owners, and decisions the process requires for your particular project.

What support should a Dynamics 365 partner provide after go-live?

Before signing an implementation agreement, decide what happens when the system is live and a problem, release, or improvement need arises. Ask for a written support proposal or schedule that defines the service, its boundaries, and the people responsible.

At minimum, check whether the written terms specify:

  • Support hours, including regional, time-zone, and language coverage where your operations require it.
  • Severity definitions and how an issue is assigned a severity.
  • Response and restoration targets, and what each target means.
  • How to raise a case, who owns it, and how it can be escalated.
  • What hypercare covers and when it ends.
  • How release or upgrade assistance and optimization work are handled.
  • What is excluded, and how work outside the support boundary is authorized.

Do not treat “ongoing support” as a complete commitment. Ask the partner to distinguish acknowledging a request from restoring service, and to explain the escalation route when the first contact cannot resolve it. Confirm whether support is available to all relevant locations and languages, and whether named implementation staff remain involved after go-live.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s public partner information describes ongoing support as part of the partner role, but it does not set the service-level agreement for an individual consultancy. The actual response targets, hours, exclusions, escalation steps, and account ownership must come from the partner’s written terms. If support quality is important to your decision, ask references specifically about their experience after launch, not only the implementation itself.

Do Microsoft partner designations prove a Dynamics 365 consultancy is good?

No. A designation is a useful capability signal, not a guarantee of project quality, functionality, or effectiveness. Microsoft says Solutions Partner designations signify capabilities and recognize proven customer success, while also warning that a designation or badge should not be treated as an endorsement or guarantee.

Microsoft’s Solutions Partner framework considers performance, skilling, and customer success. The 2026 figure in the cited Microsoft criteria is 70 points out of 100. Microsoft’s Business Applications criteria also identify relevant Dynamics 365 workloads and certifications, including Finance, Supply Chain Management, Customer Service, Sales, Field Service, and solution-architect credentials.

Use those signals to check whether a candidate’s stated capabilities and skills align with your workload. Ask which relevant workloads and credentials the proposed team—not merely the organization—can demonstrate. Then continue with references, named-resource confirmation, methodology review, and written support terms. Microsoft leaves partner selection and implementation decisions to the customer; the designation cannot answer those partner-specific questions for you.

Criteria and certification lists can change. The Microsoft qualification-criteria page referenced here was last updated October 23, 2026, so confirm current criteria directly when you make a decision. Even a current designation establishes neither the outcome of your project nor the SLA in your contract.

How should I compare Dynamics 365 implementation partners?

Use the same questions and a consistent 1-to-5 scale for every candidate. A scorecard makes differences visible and supports a fair discussion, but it should not replace reference calls, proposal review, or judgment about whether the partner understands your business.

Category Evidence to examine Score (1–5) Notes or open questions
Comparable experience Completed projects using relevant applications and process areas; references through stabilization
Industry and operating fit Similar scale, legal entities, geography, transaction complexity, and integrations
Named team Accountable leads, relevant experience, availability, continuity, and ownership
Method and governance Lifecycle plan, decision rights, scope changes, risks, dependencies, escalation
Data and integration readiness Cleaning, mapping, migration, validation, reconciliation, integration architecture
Testing and adoption Test and defect approach, user acceptance, role-based training, adoption planning
Support model Hours, severity, response and restoration targets, escalation, exclusions, account owner
References Customer confirmation of delivery and post-go-live support quality
Pricing transparency Scope assumptions, dependencies, exclusions, and change-request process
Communication Clear answers, visible ownership, and willingness to challenge assumptions constructively

Use the same scale definitions throughout: 1 means the evidence is absent or materially unclear; 3 means the partner provides relevant but incomplete evidence or leaves meaningful questions open; 5 means the evidence is specific, relevant, and confirmed by the people or documents that should substantiate it. Scores of 2 and 4 can mark positions between those anchors. Record the reason for each score so the number does not become a substitute for the underlying facts.

Weight categories according to project risk rather than assuming all ten matter equally. For a project with difficult migration or critical post-go-live operations, those areas may deserve more attention than a broad but less relevant credential list. If a partner has a high score but unresolved concerns about data ownership or support escalation, keep those concerns visible instead of allowing the total to hide them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jason Halek, Director of Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations at Rand Group, cautions that “The highest score should not always win automatically.” Treat the scorecard as a structured conversation aid. Consider whether a partner communicates clearly, understands the operating context, and constructively challenges weak assumptions—not simply whether it agrees with every request.

What questions should I ask during partner interviews?

Ask each candidate the same core questions, then follow up where the answer is general. The goal is to connect claimed capability to evidence, named owners, and terms you can review.

  1. How many comparable Dynamics 365 implementations have you completed, and may we speak with customers whose projects are through stabilization?
  2. Which applications, modules, industries, legal-entity structures, and integration patterns do those references represent?
  3. Who exactly will lead our project, what is each person’s role, and how much time is committed?
  4. What is your methodology from discovery through go-live and hypercare?
  5. How do you choose between standard functionality, configuration, customization, and process change?
  6. How will you clean, map, migrate, validate, and reconcile our data?
  7. What is your approach to integration architecture, reporting, security, workflow, and testing?
  8. How do you manage scope changes, risks, dependencies, defects, decisions, and budget variance?
  9. What post-go-live support is included, who owns the account, and what are the response and escalation terms?
  10. Which customers can speak to your support quality as well as your implementation delivery?

Ask the partner to support its answers with the proposal, relevant project examples, named-resource commitments, and a written support schedule. If an answer depends on information you have not yet provided, ask what discovery is needed and what decisions will remain open until then. A careful qualification is more useful than a confident promise that skips unresolved requirements.

What are the warning signs when choosing a partner?

Be cautious when a firm promises an unusually fast or inexpensive implementation before reviewing your processes, integrations, data, reporting, and internal capacity. Such a promise may rely on assumptions that have not yet been exposed, making it difficult to compare with a proposal that describes the actual work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other warning signs include vague scope, unclear pricing, weak migration planning, limited testing, poor communication, no named delivery team, no post-go-live support, or heavy customization without a clear business reason. A polished badge does not offset these gaps. Ask the partner to resolve them in writing or explain why they do not apply to your project.

Watch for ambiguity around customer responsibilities, too. If your staff must supply data, approve designs, test workflows, or provide training time, the proposal should say so. Unclear dependencies can become disputes about schedule, cost, or responsibility after the project begins. Use follow-up questions to find out whether the partner can be candid about risks as well as benefits.

When should I start evaluating partners?

Start before finalizing licenses, budget, scope, timeline, RFP requirements, migration strategy, or integration and reporting plans. Early conversations can reveal missing requirements and unrealistic assumptions while there is still room to revisit them, rather than after they become contractual commitments.

You do not need to select a partner before understanding your own objectives. Prepare the process and operating context you know, identify what is still uncertain, and ask candidates how they would investigate those unknowns. A useful partner should clarify what must be learned before scope and commitments can be responsibly finalized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once you have candidates, keep the evaluation consistent: request comparable evidence, assess the actual proposed team, review the delivery approach, speak with references, and settle support terms before signing. The selection is not just a choice of implementation supplier. It is also a decision about who will help resolve problems and improve the solution after launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I hire the same partner for implementation and ongoing support?

Not necessarily. What matters is that responsibility after go-live is explicit, whether support stays with the implementation team or moves to another group. If the delivery and support teams differ, ask how project knowledge, unresolved issues, and account ownership will transfer.

What if a partner cannot provide a reference for my exact industry?

Ask for the closest relevant examples and compare the operating characteristics that affect delivery, such as legal entities, geography, transaction complexity, and integrations. A related reference is more useful when the partner can explain precisely what matches and what does not.

Can Microsoft help me find a Dynamics 365 partner?

Microsoft provides partner discovery paths, including a partner directory and consulting-services route. Discovery helps you find candidates; it does not replace independently checking references, proposed personnel, project assumptions, or the support contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I finalize the scope before talking to partners?

You can begin conversations with known objectives and open questions rather than a fully fixed scope. Early partner input may help expose incomplete requirements, but commitments should be based on clarified assumptions and responsibilities.
