Dynamic difficulty adjustment (DDA) changes a game’s challenge as you play; fixed difficulty keeps a preset challenge level in place. The important difference is when challenge is controlled and what information guides it: a player’s selection, observed performance, modeled skill, or the game’s context. DDA is a family of approaches, not one standard feature—and whether it improves an experience depends on the design goal and the player.
How DDA and fixed difficulty work
Fixed difficulty
A player who selects easy, normal, or hard before starting has chosen a fixed setting if the game leaves that level unchanged. The player chooses the intended challenge, and the game does not adapt it to ongoing performance.
Dynamic difficulty adjustment
DDA changes challenge during play in response to player performance, skill, or game context. Depending on its design, it may adjust challenge upward or downward. The term alone does not tell you what signals a game uses, how often it changes difficulty, or whether those changes are visible.
What changes in the player experience?
Fixed difficulty offers a stable, player-selected level. That makes the challenge more predictable, though a preset may not remain a good fit as a session unfolds. DDA can tailor challenge as circumstances change, but adaptation can also affect a player’s sense of control if the game changes difficulty in unexpected ways. Neither description applies identically to every implementation.

- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
It also matters what a designer means by “better.” Engagement, perceived control, enjoyment, and learning are distinct outcomes; a system that helps with one is not automatically best for the others. A 2024 review describes results on DDA’s effectiveness for player experience as mixed and argues that it should be designed to serve specific goals: “Rethinking dynamic difficulty adjustment for video game design”.
DDA is not one adjustment method
One comparison by Dennis Ang and Alex Mitchell examined three conditions: no DDA, system-oriented ramping DDA, and player-oriented DDA. The study abstract reports better overall game experience when DDA was present, but also differences between the two adaptive conditions: the ramping condition had lower self-consciousness and greater transformation of time, but lower perceived control than the player-oriented condition. Those are findings about the systems and measures in that study, not a rule for all games. Read the 2017 study abstract.

What studies say about enjoyment
A 2013 experimental study with 90 participants compared static difficulty and DDA. Its abstract reports that participants enjoyed the game more when difficulty reflected their gaming experience rather than their actual gaming ability. This is a result from one experiment, not a universal finding about players or games. Read the study.
The evidence does not establish a general winner between DDA and fixed difficulty. Studies examine different systems, player groups, and outcomes. For example, a 2026 exploratory study in a multiplayer learning environment reported that an unadjusted comparison was statistically significant with a moderate-to-large effect size, but it was not significant after adjustment. That result does not prove that either approach generally performs better. Read the 2026 study.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Which approach suits a player?
- Choose a fixed setting when you want to select a predictable challenge and have it remain stable.
- DDA may suit you when you want the game to respond to how play is going, provided you are comfortable with challenge changing during a session.
- Look for clear options or explanations if control over difficulty matters to you. The DDA label does not establish whether a game makes changes obvious or lets players override them.
These are ways to think about the trade-off, not guarantees of a particular game’s behavior. Without evidence about a named title, it is not possible to say what it adjusts or whether it does so visibly.
