Choose DroidDeck if your Android device meets its hardware requirements and you want supported Steam games to run on the device itself. Choose Moonlight if you have a gaming PC and want to stream its games, programs, or desktop to Android. They solve different problems: DroidDeck is local execution, while Moonlight is remote streaming.
How DroidDeck and Moonlight differ
With DroidDeck, Steam and compatible games run locally on supported Android hardware through an ARM64 Proton and FEX setup. Moonlight is the Android client in a host-and-client arrangement: a separate PC runs the game or application, sends the video to your device, and receives your input.

Droid-Deck describes the local runtime and its limitations in its project documentation. Moonlight’s Google Play listing describes streaming from a PC.
Check whether your Android device can run DroidDeck
The current Droid-Deck README specifies Android 9 or newer and an Adreno 730 or newer, or an Adreno 8xx GPU. It lists Mali, Xclipse, PowerVR, and Adreno 710 as unsupported. These are project-stated requirements, not a guarantee that a particular game will run smoothly; Droid-Deck says compatibility and performance vary by device and that hardware validation is limited.

The README estimates about 3 GB for the runtime and another 1.1 GB for the desktop and emulators. It says root access is not required. Because the setup adds a Linux runtime and supporting components, check both the GPU and available storage before choosing this route.
What DroidDeck setup involves
- Confirm the prerequisites: check that the device runs Android 9 or newer, has a supported Adreno GPU, and has room for the runtime and desktop/emulator components.
- Install the app and runtime: download the APK from the project’s Releases page, then install the Linux runtime as directed by the Droid-Deck README.
- Adjust the Android setting before launching Steam: in Developer options, turn off Restrict child processes. The README describes a “Fix it for me” prompt for Android 12 and 13 when the setting is not available through the usual path.
- Check each game on your device: a working Steam setup does not mean every Steam game is compatible or performs well on that hardware.
Droid-Deck’s release descriptions include Steam Big Picture, a handheld-oriented library view, Android-app support, dual-screen features, a Linux desktop, and emulators. These are project-described features, not a promise that every app, game, or emulator will work well on every device. Droid-Deck also says it is not affiliated with Valve; it is not SteamOS.

What Moonlight needs from your PC and network
Moonlight does not run the PC game on Android. You need a host PC configured for streaming. The Android listing identifies GeForce Experience for NVIDIA hosts and Sunshine for hosts using any GPU, so Moonlight is not limited to NVIDIA hardware.
For a more reliable connection, Moonlight recommends a mid- to high-end wireless router, a strong connection to the Android client—with 5 GHz Wi-Fi highly recommended—and Ethernet from the host PC to the router. You can stream over a local network or the internet, but the quality you experience depends on the client and network. A weak or inconsistent connection can make remote play less suitable than running a game locally.

The listing supports Android gamepads as well as keyboard and mouse. It also describes multiple codecs and streaming features; the feature ceilings depend on the client and setup, so they should not be treated as a universal performance guarantee. - Pick DroidDeck if your device matches the stated Android and GPU requirements, you have room for its runtime, and local execution is your priority.
- Pick Moonlight if you have a gaming PC to host the game and a network that can carry a responsive stream to your Android device.
- Neither is a safe assumption if your Android GPU is unsupported and you have no host PC, or if you need guaranteed compatibility or performance. The available product documentation does not establish a universal winner or a controlled side-by-side performance result.
For either option, an external Bluetooth controller is optional: Moonlight lists Android gamepad support, while many Android handhelds already have built-in controls. Check that a controller works with your specific device before buying one.
