Dread’s onion service addresses were reportedly redirected to pages promoting a rival forum, but the available reporting does not establish that Dread’s server or user data was accessed. A statement attributed to Dread administrator Hugbunter blames an accidentally included onion private key in a GoBalance software archive; that explanation and the operator’s denial of a data breach have not been independently authenticated.

What happened to Dread?

Dread is a darknet discussion forum. A peer-reviewed study by Logie and Das says it launched in February 2018 and describes public and invite-only forums covering topics including darknet markets, hacking, fraud, identity theft and drugs. That study is historical background, not an assessment of this incident.

Damien Bancal’s ZATAZ report, updated October 7, says Dread’s primary onion address was diverted on October 5. It reports that an alternative address later presented as safe was diverted as well, with both pages promoting a rival platform. ZATAZ says it observed the diversions in real time. The report supports the claim that two addresses were redirected; it does not establish what happened inside Dread’s systems.

What explanation did Dread’s administrator give?

A Reddit discussion reproduces a statement attributed to Hugbunter, identified there as a Dread administrator. The statement says that a recent GoBalance software archive upload was the wrong package and apparently included an onion private key that should have remained local. It calls the mistake serious and says the old address should be treated as retired.

The statement is a repost, and its attribution and technical explanation are not independently authenticated in the reporting available here. It should therefore be understood as the operator’s reported account, not a confirmed forensic finding.

Does an onion key leak mean Dread’s server was hacked?

No. Control of an onion service’s private key and access to the service’s backend are distinct things. The attributed statement says someone holding the key could use the onion address and warns of man-in-the-middle risks. That is a claim about address impersonation and potential traffic risk; it does not by itself show that an actor accessed Dread’s origin server, database or user records.

Hugbunter reportedly denied a server breach and user-data access. The available sources do not independently confirm either that denial or any server compromise, database access, traffic interception or user-data theft. A message reportedly claiming control of “all data” is not proof that data was obtained.

What is known about the second address and current status?

ZATAZ reports that a later alternative address was also redirected, but the status of the service and the final scope of any access remain unresolved in the reporting available here. An October 7 Reddit discussion raises community concerns about the second address and possible access, but it is an anonymous user account, not independent confirmation.

The exact current onion address is not included here because it is volatile and has not been independently authenticated. Do not treat an address shared in a forum thread—or a page claiming to be Dread—as proof that it is controlled by the forum’s operators.

What should readers take from the reports?

  • Reported observation: ZATAZ says it saw two Dread onion addresses diverted to pages promoting a rival.
  • Attributed operator explanation: A Reddit repost says Hugbunter blamed an accidentally included onion private key in a GoBalance archive.
  • Unsettled question: The sources do not independently establish whether Dread’s backend or user data was accessed, or whether the addresses have since been recovered.

A separate Tor Project forum notice dated October 5 describes unauthorized access to Linux hosts used by some relay operators and changes to relay configuration. It concerns a different incident and is not evidence of a compromise of Dread infrastructure.
