DRAM and NAND flash are both semiconductor memory, but they do different jobs. DRAM is fast, temporary working memory for data a device is actively using; NAND flash is nonvolatile memory that keeps data when power is off and is used mainly for storage. That distinction explains why a computer has both RAM and an SSD—and why their prices can move for different market reasons.

DRAM vs. NAND flash at a glance

Comparison DRAM NAND flash
Main job Working memory for active computing Persistent storage
Keeps data without power? No. It is volatile and must be refreshed while powered. Yes. It is nonvolatile and retains data when power is off.
Common examples DDR, LPDDR, GDDR and HBM memory SSD, eMMC/UFS storage, SD and microSD cards, USB flash drives
What to compare within the category Generation, speed, capacity, latency, power and platform support Capacity, interface, bits per cell, workload, and endurance and performance specifications
Price caveat Product segment and mix affect pricing. NAND chip, managed storage product, SSD and contract or retail prices are different measures.

What DRAM does

DRAM (dynamic random-access memory) holds information a processor or other device needs to access while it is working. A computer uses it for active programs and data; a phone uses a low-power form of DRAM for its current tasks. DRAM is volatile: it loses its contents when power is removed, and its cells need periodic refresh while the device is on.

Samsung describes a DRAM cell as one transistor and one capacitor. The capacitor’s charge represents a binary value, and the transistor controls reading and writing. This cell structure supports high memory density, making DRAM practical as system working memory. Samsung Semiconductor’s DRAM overview describes the technology and its product families.

DRAM families serve different devices

  • DDR: Main memory used in PCs and servers.
  • LPDDR: Lower-power DRAM used in mobile devices.
  • GDDR: Graphics memory used in graphics cards.
  • HBM: High-bandwidth memory used in AI accelerators and high-performance computing.

These names identify families, not interchangeable modules. When comparing or buying DRAM, generation, capacity, speed, form factor and platform support matter; a module must be compatible with the device it is intended for.

What NAND flash does

NAND flash stores data persistently. It is the main memory technology inside most SSDs and also appears in eMMC or UFS storage, SD and microSD cards, and USB flash drives. Unlike DRAM, NAND does not need power to retain stored data.

An SSD is a storage device, not another name for DRAM. Samsung explains that an SSD mainly uses nonvolatile NAND flash to store data when power is off. Some SSDs also include a small DRAM cache for management tasks, but that does not change NAND’s role as the drive’s persistent storage. Samsung Semiconductor makes this distinction; Micron’s NAND guidance describes NAND applications and product types.

NAND bits per cell: SLC, MLC, TLC and QLC

NAND cell labels describe how many bits each cell stores. More bits per cell can raise storage density, but the label alone does not determine the performance or endurance of a finished product: those specifications vary with the particular memory and implementation.

NAND type Bits per cell General use described by Micron
SLC 1 High-performance, high-endurance applications
MLC 2 Cost-sensitive, high-density uses that balance performance and endurance
TLC 3 Common in mass-storage consumer products
QLC 4 High-density mass storage where cost matters

These are manufacturer-level general descriptions, not guarantees that every SLC, MLC, TLC or QLC device has identical speed or endurance. Check the specifications for the actual product and workload.

Why an SSD is not “DRAM”

DRAM and NAND can both appear inside one computer, and sometimes inside one storage device, but their purposes differ. The system’s RAM holds active working data; its SSD stores files and applications when the computer is off. A DRAM cache in some SSDs helps with drive management—it does not make the SSD’s main storage DRAM.

There is also a difference between NAND chips and finished products. Managed NAND packages integrate a controller and firmware functions. Raw NAND requires the host system to handle management tasks such as error correction and flash translation. An SSD adds components and product-level specifications beyond the NAND itself, so NAND chip pricing, SSD pricing and RAM-module pricing are not interchangeable.

What drives DRAM and NAND prices

Memory prices reflect supply and demand across different product segments, not just the physical chip. Prices can be affected by demand from end markets, what suppliers choose to manufacture, available supply, inventories and purchasing behavior, capital spending, and how quickly factories can deliver additional saleable memory. A shift toward higher-value products or process upgrades can constrain supply elsewhere; announced investment does not necessarily create new output immediately.

In a 13 November 2025 outlook, TrendForce said suppliers were directing investment toward process upgrades and higher-value products such as HBM, while cleanroom constraints limited near-term capacity additions. Its estimates for 2026 industry capital expenditure were $61.3 billion for DRAM and $22.2 billion for NAND flash. Those were estimates in a 2025 outlook, not settled spending results. TrendForce’s 13 November 2025 outlook explains the supply and investment context.

What the 2026 Q4 forecast says—and what it does not

In a forecast published 30 September 2026, TrendForce projected that Q4 2026 conventional DRAM contract prices would rise 10–15% quarter over quarter, and that NAND Flash contract prices would rise 15–20% quarter over quarter. These are forecasts for contract prices, not observed results or guaranteed changes to the checkout price of a particular RAM kit or SSD. TrendForce’s 30 September 2026 forecast gives the segment outlook and underlying conditions.

The same forecast does not describe a uniform increase across every product. TrendForce attributes tight DRAM conditions partly to advanced-process capacity going to server products and strong server/RDIMM demand, while noting demand pressure in PC and mobile markets. It also describes differing conditions across graphics, client SSD and enterprise SSD segments. AI infrastructure demand supports enterprise SSDs, while client SSD and NAND wafer purchasing face different constraints. A broad market forecast therefore cannot tell you how much a particular retailer will change a particular product’s price.

How to apply the distinction when comparing products

  • For a computer’s working memory: Compare DRAM capacity, generation, speed and latency, then confirm platform compatibility.
  • For storage: Compare the SSD or other storage product’s capacity, interface and workload-relevant endurance and performance specifications. Its NAND type is one consideration, not a complete product rating.
  • When reading price news: Check whether the figure refers to DRAM or NAND, which product segment it covers, whether it is a contract or retail price, and whether it is a forecast or an observed price.
