Its official description links growing crops, gathering resources, cooking, exploration, and crafting with adopting dragon companions. The Steam listing gives the release date as September 24, 2026. The official announcement describes the core loop as rebuilding an abandoned farm, growing crops, cooking, exploring, and adopting dragons. That framing matters: the confirmed route to more companions is progression through the game, not a documented standalone breeding or egg-collection system.
What to do to get more dragons
- Work on the opening farm-restoration tasks. Grow crops and gather the resources the game requests. A third-party guide published September 25, 2026 recommends these as early progression activities.
- Complete available town requests. The same launch-day guide says town requests open new work and dragon companions. Follow the requests shown in your game rather than assuming every player has the same sequence.
- Keep following objectives and errands. The official description connects farm restoration, community activity, and adopting dragons. Advance the objectives that are currently available and check for new requests as your progress opens more activities.
- Verify named-dragon requirements in your build. The available sources do not establish a complete roster or exact prerequisites for each dragon. Do not assume a particular item, location, or quest guarantees a specific companion unless the game itself confirms it.
Do dragons come from eggs or breeding?
The official materials describe adopting dragon companions, but the sources available do not confirm a breeding-based collection system or a reliable egg-and-hatchery method. Guides for other dragon games may use those mechanics; do not rely on them for Dragon Shelter unless they are present in your current build.

The official materials mention gamepad support, and a launch-period PC Gamer review says the game recommends gamepad play. A controller is optional setup hardware, not a confirmed requirement for adopting dragons. Check the current Steam listing and your controller’s platform compatibility before choosing a device.
