In Dragon Shelter, start looking for crafting materials on your farm, then check the nearby town for clay, larger trees, and additional ore. Some resources require upgraded tools, while others come from raising animals. The item locations, recipes, yields, and respawn notes below are reports from a third-party guide, not developer-confirmed documentation; check your current game build if a material is missing.

Where to find crafting materials in Dragon Shelter

The Steam listing describes gathering resources and crafting as core activities, with harvests also used for cooking, alchemy, and trade. The detailed map locations here come from an unofficial launch-week materials guide, so treat them as practical leads rather than a complete or guaranteed inventory.

Farm and town gathering spots

Material Reported source or method Reported uses or notes
Berry Berry bushes on the farm Early food and jam
Clay Large brown piles in town; the western beach is specifically noted Vases, baskets, oven, stove, and foundations
Copper Ore Copper-flecked rocks on the farm and a few in town Copper Ingots and Firefly Lantern
Fireflies Glowing yellow swarms on the farm Used for Fire Essence; the guide reports infrequent, random respawns
Hardwood Log Largest trees on the farm and in town Hardwood Boards
Hay Cut grass or weeds on the farm or in town Stone tools, trampoline, and fertilisers; the guide says it regrows quickly
Herb Purple flowers on the farm Recipes and quest turn-ins; the guide warns it may not respawn
Iron Ore Ore-marked rocks on the farm and in town Later tools and equipment
Log Trees and fallen logs on the farm and in town Planks, furniture, and barrels
Memory Nuts Greenish-blue bushes on the farm Recipes and quests; the guide reports them as farm-only
Oak Log Medium-sized trees on the farm and in town Mid-tier crafting
Stick Byproduct of chopping trees Stone tools and other recipes
Stone Large rock clusters throughout the farm and village Tools, foundations, mills, and essence recipes

These locations and notes are all reported by the unofficial materials guide. It recommends caution with Fireflies and Herb, and with clearing Berry or Memory Nut bushes, because of their reported uses or limited regrowth. Those warnings are player advice based on that guide, not a universal rule confirmed by the developer.

Materials from animals and special interactions

Material Reported source or method Reported uses or notes
Caterpillar Light Use an Alchemy Flask on a Caterpillar when the bottle icon appears; the guide says this follows several days of feeding Alchemy and quest items
Silk Raise Caterpillars after livestock unlocks; the guide estimates a one- or two-day wait Recipes and clothing-style items
Slime Thread Raise Water Jellyfish Lava Terrarium and copper tools; the guide reports typically about one per animal per day
Smoldering Coal Dropped by raised Fire Salamanders Fire-tier crafting

Animal production depends on unlocking livestock and waiting for the relevant interaction or drop. The timings and yield above are the guide’s observations, not guaranteed rates.

Which materials need upgraded tools?

The materials guide reports these tool gates. Its reviewed sources did not document an Iron Axe recipe, so the table identifies the reported tool requirement without implying that every tool is available at the same progression point.

Material Reported tool requirement
Copper Ore Stone, Iron, or Festival Pickaxe
Iron Ore Copper or Festival Pickaxe
Oak Log Copper or Festival Axe
Hardwood Log Iron or Festival Axe

The guide says Stone tools unlock after a Blacksmith request and that festival merchants may provide a shortcut to higher-tier tools. Availability and tool behavior can change between builds, so check the current game if a listed tool does not work.

How resources feed crafting and town restoration

Wild Forest Studio and Curve Games describe crafting as a way to restore the world: gathering materials supports tool upgrades, building repairs, crafting-station unlocks, farm decoration, and spaces where dragons can rest and play. Their official Steam announcement puts it simply: “Crafting is how you bring the world back to life.”

Recipe examples reported by the guide

Crafted item Reported ingredients
Water Essence 1 Water Flower + 1 Clay
Earth Essence 2 Wise Mushrooms + 3 Stone
Fire Essence 2 Flame Roses + 4 Fireflies
Copper Ingot 1 Copper Ore + 1 Fire Essence
Plank 4 Logs
Hardwood Board 2 Hardwood Logs

These are recipe examples from the unofficial guide, not a complete recipe book. The guide also notes that requests from the Blacksmith, Carpenter, Alchemist, and town restoration consume gathered materials; exact quantities for many turn-ins are not published by the developer.

Early requests that introduce the loop

A separate fan quest guide reports early requests involving selling berries to obtain a shovel, bringing Hugh the Blacksmith 6 Sticks and 4 Logs, planting 4 wheat plots for Leah, and supplying 4 Logs to repair Rufus’s cart. It presents these requests as introductions to tool acquisition, farming, and town repair. Treat the sequence and counts as that guide’s current report rather than an official quest specification.

A practical gathering order

  1. Collect common farm materials first. Check for Logs, Sticks, Stone, Berry, and other visible resources around the farm before expanding the search.
  2. Visit town for materials not obvious at home. Look for Clay piles, larger trees, and additional ore rocks; the guide calls out the western beach for Clay.
  3. Use the right tool for gated deposits. If an ore rock or tree does not yield the material, compare it with the reported tool requirements and progress through the Blacksmith route or check festival merchants.
  4. Unlock livestock for animal-derived resources. Raise the relevant animals for Silk, Slime Thread, or Smoldering Coal; use an Alchemy Flask on a Caterpillar only when its bottle icon appears to seek Caterpillar Light.
  5. Keep an eye on scarce-looking items. The guide advises saving Fireflies and Herb and avoiding clearing Berry or Memory Nut bushes because of reported later uses or regrowth limits.
  6. Recheck after game updates. The game launched on Steam on September 24, 2026, and fan resource guidance warns that locations and mechanics may differ in a later build.

What is confirmed, and what may change?

The official Steam description establishes the broad loop—growing crops, gathering resources, and crafting—and the developer-publisher announcement describes how crafting supports restoration and upgrades. The item-by-item map, tool gates, animal yields, respawn behavior, and recipe quantities in this guide are third-party reports. Verify a hard-to-find resource in your current build rather than assuming a reported location or rate is guaranteed.
