For the quickest complete Frieza-focused watch, watch Dragon Ball Z Kai episodes 1–54. That covers the Saiyan-to-Frieza story, with Kai’s Frieza Saga itself running from episode 19 through 54. Prefer the original broadcast experience? Watch Dragon Ball Z episodes 1–107; episodes 75–107 are the block specifically labeled the Frieza Saga. After either version, watch Battle of Gods and Resurrection F, or watch Dragon Ball Super episodes 1–27 as their anime retellings, then continue with episode 28.
What is the correct Dragon Ball Z Frieza Saga watch order?
For a first watch, use one of these two routes. The first is shorter; the second preserves the original Dragon Ball Z broadcast run. Both include the lead-in that makes the Namek and Frieza story easier to follow.
Fast, canon-focused route
- Watch Dragon Ball Z Kai episodes 1–54. The complete Saiyan-to-Frieza run is covered here; the specifically titled Frieza Saga is episodes 19–54.
- Optionally watch the 48-minute television special Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku. It is a prequel about Frieza and the events before Planet Vegeta’s destruction. You can place it before Kai or after the Frieza story.
- Choose one version of the next two stories: watch the films Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F, in that order, or watch Dragon Ball Super episodes 1–27.
- Continue with Dragon Ball Super episode 28 through episode 131.
- For more of the story after the series, watch Dragon Ball Super: Broly and then Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
Original-Z route
- Watch Dragon Ball Z episodes 1–107 for the complete Saiyan-to-Frieza run.
- Optionally add older Z movies or specials as side stories. There is no established authoritative episode-by-episode placement for every older film, so do not treat a suggested interleaving as required canon order.
- After the Frieza material, watch Battle of Gods and Resurrection F, or use Dragon Ball Super episodes 1–27 as the anime versions of those stories.
- If you chose the anime retellings—or have watched the films and want to move into the new Super material—continue at Dragon Ball Super episode 28.
Episode 1 is not part of the narrowly labeled Frieza block, but it is the practical starting point for the full Z-era lead-in. The original episode listing groups episodes 75–107 under “Frieza Saga,” with the preceding Namek and Captain Ginyu material grouped separately. Starting at episode 75 therefore skips important setup; start at 1 if you want the complete Saiyan-to-Frieza story.
Should I watch DBZ or Kai for the Frieza Saga?
Choose Kai for a tighter, remastered version with less anime-exclusive material. Choose original Z if you want the longer broadcast experience, its original pacing, and more of the material added for the anime.

| Version | Practical Frieza-focused route | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon Ball Z Kai | Episodes 1–54; dedicated Frieza Saga: 19–54 | A recut and remastered version of Z that omits most anime-exclusive content. Kai’s production listing gives 167 international episodes in total. |
| Dragon Ball Z | Episodes 1–107; dedicated Frieza Saga: 75–107 | The original, longer-paced anime run, retaining more anime-original material. The Japanese episode listing gives 291 episodes in total. |
The totals describe the full shows, not the length of the Frieza story alone. They also come from different listings: Kai’s 167-episode figure is for its international production listing, while Z’s 291 is the Japanese episode count. For the decision at hand, the more useful comparison is the route length: Kai episodes 1–54 versus Z episodes 1–107.
Neither route requires watching every older film. If your goal is specifically to follow the central story, pick one show version and then use the post-Frieza film-or-anime choice below. If you want a broader viewing experience, original Z plus optional side material gives you more of the older anime presentation—but not a single definitive movie placement for every title.
Which Dragon Ball Z episodes are the Frieza Saga?
In the original Z episode listing, the section labeled “Frieza Saga” is episodes 75–107. That label does not include the earlier Namek and Captain Ginyu material, even though those episodes are part of the larger journey leading into the confrontation with Frieza.
In Kai, the dedicated Frieza Saga is episodes 19–54. For a first watch, the recommended Kai route is episodes 1–54, not just 19–54: episodes 1–18 provide the Saiyan-story lead-in. The comparable complete original-Z route is episodes 1–107.

This distinction explains why episode guides can appear to disagree. One may use “Frieza Saga” narrowly for the named block; a watch-order recommendation may use “Frieza Saga” more broadly to mean the full run from the start of the Saiyan story through Frieza’s defeat. Check whether a guide is naming a specific arc or recommending the complete lead-in before following its episode range.
Do I watch Bardock before or after Namek?
Bardock – The Father of Goku is optional, not a required episode in the Namek sequence. It is a 48-minute television film released in 1990, depicting Bardock’s attempt to resist Frieza before Planet Vegeta’s destruction.
For a straightforward first watch, either place it before the main Z or Kai run as a prequel, or watch it after completing the Frieza material. The special originally aired between Z episodes 63 and 64, but inserting it there interrupts the main Namek story; its broadcast position is not a reason you have to pause your watch at that point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe special is the older extra most directly connected to this story. Toei’s description frames it as Bardock’s rebellion against Frieza, making it useful background for viewers who want to know more about the events before the main series. If you are following only the central episode sequence, you can skip it without changing the recommended episode order.

Do I watch Resurrection F before Dragon Ball Super?
Battle of Gods comes first, followed by Resurrection F. Both take place after Frieza’s defeat; Resurrection F is the sequel about his return and revenge against Goku.
After that, you can begin Dragon Ball Super at episode 28. Alternatively, watch Super episodes 1–27, which retell the two films’ stories with additional anime material, and then continue with episode 28. The series has 131 episodes in total.
These are two ways through the same first pair of Super-era stories, not four required installments. For a first watch, avoid watching both films and all 27 retelling episodes back-to-back unless comparing the adaptations is the point. A film-first route gives you the two movie presentations before moving to episode 28; an anime-first route keeps the story in one continuous series presentation.

Are the old Dragon Ball Z movies canon?
The older Z films are best treated as optional side stories for this watch-order question. The available episode and movie information does not establish one authoritative order for inserting every older film into the main episode sequence, so an episode-by-episode movie timeline would imply more certainty than the evidence supports.
If you are watching for the main Frieza storyline, prioritize the episodes and the directly relevant Bardock special. Add older movies if you want more Z-era material, but do so as extras rather than assuming each one belongs between particular episodes. The Super-era films discussed above have a clearer relationship to the anime: the first 27 Super episodes retell Battle of Gods and Resurrection F.

For a completion-minded Frieza watch, start with original Z episodes 1–107, then add Bardock – The Father of Goku and any older Z films you want as side material. Follow the main story with either the two Super-era films or Super episodes 1–27, then continue from Super episode 28 through 131. Add Broly and Super Hero afterward.

Where does the Kai Vegeta and Frieza Blu-ray set fit?
A home-media listing for Dragon Ball Z Kai: Vegeta and Frieza covers Kai episodes 1–54, the full recommended Kai route from the Saiyan lead-in through the Frieza material. It is relevant if you specifically want that episode range on disc; it is not a different watch order or an additional story after episode 54.
Home-media editions and streaming rights are separate questions. The existence of DVD or Blu-ray releases for the Kai episodes and the two films does not establish current availability in a particular country or on a particular streaming service.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many episodes are in Dragon Ball Super?
The series listing runs to 131 episodes. That total includes the first 27 episodes that retell the stories of the first two Super-era films.
How long is Bardock – The Father of Goku?
It is a 48-minute television special released in 1990. Its original broadcast fell between Z episodes 63 and 64, though that is not the most convenient place for a first-watch insertion.
Can I watch Kai episodes 19–54 without the earlier episodes?
That range is Kai’s specifically labeled Frieza Saga, but it leaves out Kai episodes 1–18 and their Saiyan-story setup. For the complete Saiyan-to-Frieza lead-in, use episodes 1–54.
Does watching Battle of Gods mean I should skip all of Dragon Ball Super?
No. The film replaces the need to watch Super episodes 1–14 for the same story, but the next film’s retelling occupies episodes 15–27. The anime route through episode 27 also includes additional material compared with the films.
