Your character’s origin shapes the opening, while class and weapon choices determine which abilities and progression options make sense.
How combat works: direct your party, not just your hero
Dragon Age: Origins is designed around a party of four adventurers drawn from companions you meet in Ferelden, although the official PC manual says it is possible to complete the game using only your created character. For a first playthrough, bringing companions lets you combine different roles and gives you more options when a fight turns difficult. The official PC manual describes the party as the game’s intended approach, not as a requirement to use one particular lineup.

Think in terms of jobs rather than a fixed “best” team: someone who can withstand pressure, characters who can deal damage, and support or utility options that help the group respond to threats. A party need not be built around one exact class combination; choose companions and abilities that complement the way you want to play, and manually direct them when a fight calls for a different response.
Set up tactics for repeatable actions
Combat Tactics lets you give characters conditional instructions, such as having a mage heal an ally whose health falls below half. The manual says ranks in the Combat Tactics skill increase the number of condition-and-action slots available. Use those slots to automate predictable reactions; they are a convenience, not a substitute for taking control when the situation changes.

#1 Best Overall
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Start with a simple, useful reaction, such as healing a badly injured ally.
- Add other instructions as you gain tactics slots and learn which actions your party repeats often.
- Step in manually when targets, positioning, or the immediate threat make the configured response unsuitable.
The Steam-hosted PC manual also documents tactics presets. Treat presets as starting points rather than assuming a preset will handle every encounter the way you want.
Know what you are spending: attributes, skills, and class abilities
Character progression has three distinct parts. Attributes are the core stats you raise at level-up; skills are learnable by characters across classes; and class abilities take the form of talents for warriors and rogues or spells for mages. Abilities can be activated or sustained, and learning an ability in a chain can unlock the next one when its prerequisites are met. Before investing in a chain, check what it requires and whether its role fits your character.
Rank #2
- Scalable combat options that let you decide the level of control you have over your party, including NPCs. Issue orders, set your own tactical AI, or take control of any party member to lead the charge.
- 6 possible playable preludes known as ‘Origin Stories’ which along with your play, define how your hero character will see the world, how it sees you and sets the tone for the entire story.
- Travel across the vast and varied lands of Ferelden; from the conspiratorial halls of the last great dwarven city, Orzammar, to the untamed snarls of the Korcari Wilds.
- Dragon Age: Origins will give you deep character customization options including: class, race, appearance, abilities, and equipment.
- At the heart of the storm sweeping across Ferelden. Decide the fate of nations, people and, ultimately, yourself. Just remember: for every choice, there is a consequence.
The PC manual states that each level grants three attribute points and one talent or spell. Skill points arrive at different rates: rogues receive one every two levels, while warriors and mages receive one every three levels. These are game mechanics described by the 2009 manual, not a recommendation to distribute points in a single fixed way.
For a build, begin with the job you want the character to do, then choose abilities and attributes that support it. A durable frontline fighter, a damage-focused weapon user, and a spellcaster who supports or controls a fight have different needs. Weapon style and its prerequisites matter, as do survivability, damage, and how much you want to direct the character yourself. The manual establishes progression rules, but not a universally optimal build.

Choose a party by role, not by a prescribed lineup
With four party slots, consider whether the group has a way to endure pressure, deal damage, and provide support or utility. Those functions can be covered in different combinations, depending on the companions available and the protagonist you created. If a fight exposes a gap—such as insufficient durability or support—adjust the party or how you direct its abilities rather than assuming there is only one correct composition.
- Durability: Include a character able to take pressure when enemies reach the party.
- Damage: Bring abilities and weapon styles suited to defeating threats efficiently.
- Support and utility: Use healing or other helpful effects where they fit your party’s needs.
This is a role-based way to evaluate a lineup, not a claim that every party must include a specific class or companion. The official manual supports the four-member party as the intended design but does not identify a single best composition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Pick an origin for its story, then shape the character
Your background determines which of six opening acts you experience, and it continues to affect the larger experience, according to the official Xbox 360 manual. Choose an origin that appeals to you as a role-playing setup; the verified distinction is that the opening differs, not that one origin is mechanically required for a successful playthrough.
If you prefer to get into the game without making every starting choice yourself, the manual describes Quick Play as selecting starting attributes, skills, and spells or talents based on class. Players who want more control can instead make those choices during character creation. Either way, your origin and your class answer different questions: the first shapes the background and opening, while the second informs your abilities and progression.

The PC manual lists 2,000 XP to progress from level 1 to level 2, with later thresholds increasing by 500 XP at each successive level. These are progression figures from the 2009 manual; they explain the game’s stated level curve, not how quickly any particular player will gain levels.
