The ScanSnap iX500 works with Windows 10 and Windows 11 through ScanSnap Home, not ScanSnap Manager. Ricoh/PFU lists the iX500 as a supported discontinued model for ScanSnap Home, with minimum-version requirements for some Windows editions.
Download ScanSnap Home from the official ScanSnap software page and select ScanSnap iX500 during setup. The iX500 is not listed as supported on Windows 11 ARM PCs.
Before downloading the iX500 software

Check your Windows edition and architecture before starting. To view them, open Settings > System > About. The iX500 is supported on standard x64 Windows 10 and Windows 11 editions, but it is not listed as compatible with Windows on ARM. Preview and beta Windows releases are also outside the published support scope.
Download ScanSnap Home for the iX500
Use the official Download the ScanSnap software page. Avoid third-party “driver download” sites: the iX500 does not use a conventional TWAIN or ISIS driver, and its Windows software is distributed as part of ScanSnap Home.

- Open the official ScanSnap software download page.
- Click Download Installer.
- Read the END-USER LICENSE AGREEMENT to the end, then click Agree. The download starts after you agree.
- When the download finishes, open the Windows file whose name resembles WinSSHDownloadInstaller_x_x_x_x.
ScanSnap Manager is not the right choice for a new Windows 10 or Windows 11 setup. Its support ended on November 7, 2024, and the legacy download service for Manager and related applications has been discontinued. Older pages may still mention historical Manager versions, but that does not mean current Manager downloads or support are available.
Install the iX500 driver and software
Log in to Windows with an administrator account, close other applications, and connect the scanner when the setup program requests it. The official ScanSnap Home installation sequence is:
- At Welcome to ScanSnap Home Setup, click Next.
- At Setup Type, select Typical, then click Next.
- Review the installation contents and click Install.
- Allow roughly 10 to 15 minutes for the installation to complete.
- When prompted to choose a scanner, select ScanSnap iX500.
- Click Start setup and follow the instructions in the setup window.
- Finish when the window reports Connection is complete.
The standard installer may need an internet connection while it installs components. Keep the iX500 powered on and connect it directly to the computer with its USB cable during initial setup.
Install ScanSnap Home without internet access
For a computer that cannot connect to the internet during installation, use the separately labeled Offline Installer, rather than the normal Download Installer. PFU’s download page specifically directs iX1500 and iX500 users to the offline-installer option.

- On an internet-connected computer, open the official ScanSnap download page.
- Choose Offline Installer instead of Download Installer.
- Create a folder on a USB flash drive or other removable storage, such as ScanSnap.
- Copy the downloaded file, whose name resembles WinSSHOfflineInstaller_x_x_x.exe, into that folder.
- Move the storage device to the Windows computer and run the offline installer.
- Complete setup, select ScanSnap iX500, and follow the connection instructions.
The legacy iX500 installer documentation describes an internet requirement for that installer. That is separate from the current offline package; use the package explicitly labeled Offline Installer when the target PC has no internet connection.
If Windows 11 says it cannot connect to the iX500
ScanSnap Home can display Failed to connect to the ScanSnap after the computer wakes from sleep or hibernation, after reconnecting the USB cable, after powering the scanner off and on, or after switching between scanners.
First, make sure ScanSnap Home is version 2.3.1 or later. Then try these fixes in order:
- Click Restore in the error message, if that button is available.
- Leave the iX500 powered on and connected by USB, then restart Windows.
- If the problem remains, open Start and search for Services.
- Open the Services app, right-click Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), and choose Restart.
- Confirm that the WIA service status is Running, then open ScanSnap Home again.
Also try a different USB port and avoid a hub while testing. The documented Windows fix addresses the software connection state; replacing a damaged cable or removing an unreliable hub addresses the physical connection.

Windows 11 24H2 problems and fixes
Some ScanSnap Home functions were affected on early Windows 11 version 24H2 builds. Reported symptoms included incorrect crop-area selection, text-recognition failure, wireless setup failure, and inability to insert a page into an existing file.
Windows update KB5048667, which brings 24H2 to build 26100.2605, fixed the crop, text-recognition, and page-insertion problems. Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart the computer before troubleshooting ScanSnap Home further.
Wireless setup can fail with A Wi-Fi connection is not established on this computer if location access was denied. Windows uses location permission during wireless discovery. Enable it at:
Start > Settings > Security & Privacy > Location
Turn on Location services. Then retry wireless setup in ScanSnap Home. If Windows shows Let Windows and apps access your location?, allow the permission for the setup to proceed.

Fix error 0xc000007b during installation
If Windows displays The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b), PFU identifies a missing or damaged Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime as the likely cause.
- Obtain the specified Microsoft runtime installer, VC_redist.x86.exe.
- Run the file and complete the Visual C++ installation or repair.
- Restart Windows. Do not merely shut the computer down and turn it back on; PFU specifically calls for a restart.
- Try starting ScanSnap Home or running its installer again.
- If the error continues, uninstall ScanSnap Home, download the installer again, and reinstall it.
What not to install
- Do not assume the iX500 is unsupported: ScanSnap Home supports it on standard Windows 10 and Windows 11 editions.
- Do not start with ScanSnap Manager: it is legacy software whose support and download service have ended.
- Do not expect a generic TWAIN or ISIS driver: the iX500’s Windows driver does not support those interfaces.
- Do not use the standard installer for an offline PC: choose the separately labeled Offline Installer.
- Do not install on Windows 11 ARM expecting compatibility: the current ARM listing does not include the iX500.
FAQ
Is the ScanSnap iX500 compatible with Windows 11?
Yes. The iX500 is supported through ScanSnap Home 2.2.10 or later on standard Windows 11 Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 requires ScanSnap Home 2.22.2 or later.
Where can I download the ScanSnap iX500 driver?

Does the iX500 work with Windows 11 ARM?
No. The current compatibility information does not list the iX500 for Windows on ARM. The ARM-supported discontinued model identified by Ricoh/PFU is the iX1400.
Why does ScanSnap Home say “Failed to connect to the ScanSnap”?
The error can occur after sleep, hibernation, USB reconnection, power cycling, or switching scanners. Click Restore, restart Windows with the powered scanner connected, and restart the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service from the Services app.
Can I install ScanSnap Home on a PC without internet?
Yes. Download the official Offline Installer on another computer, copy the file resembling WinSSHOfflineInstaller_x_x_x.exe to removable storage, and run it on the offline PC.
The Bottom Line
For Windows 10 or Windows 11, install ScanSnap Home and choose ScanSnap iX500 during setup. Use at least version 2.2.10 on standard Windows 11, update Windows 11 24H2 past build 26100.2605 if ScanSnap features misbehave, and use the Offline Installer when the target computer has no internet access. ScanSnap Manager, generic TWAIN/ISIS packages, and Windows 11 ARM are not suitable substitutes for the current iX500 setup.
