ADB is not a Windows driver: it is the Android Debug Bridge command-line tool included in Google’s Android SDK Platform-Tools package. Download Platform-Tools to get ADB, then install the appropriate USB driver if Windows needs one to communicate with your phone.
This guide covers downloading and using ADB, enabling USB debugging, installing a compatible driver, and checking the connection with adb devices. Android Studio is optional; Google lists Platform-Tools 37.0.1 as released in July 2026, and its download page links to the newest available package.
What you need to install
ADB and a USB driver are separate components:
| Component | What it does | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Android SDK Platform-Tools | Provides ADB, fastboot, and supporting files. | Google Platform-Tools release page |
| USB driver | Lets Windows identify the phone’s ADB interface. | Google USB Driver for Google devices; the phone manufacturer’s driver for other brands. |
Android Studio is not required. If you already have it, Google recommends using its copy of Platform-Tools because Android Studio updates it automatically. Otherwise, use the standalone ZIP.
1. Download ADB Platform-Tools
- Open Google’s SDK Platform-Tools release notes.
- Scroll to Downloads and select Download SDK Platform-Tools for Windows.
- Accept Google’s license terms if prompted, then save the ZIP file.
The download is a ZIP archive, not an installer; it does not add ADB to Windows automatically.

2. Extract Platform-Tools
- Find the downloaded ZIP file, normally in C:\Users\YourName\Downloads.
- Right-click it and select Extract All.
- Choose a location, such as C:\, for a short command path.
- Open the extracted platform-tools folder.
The folder contains adb.exe, fastboot.exe, and supporting DLL files. No installation wizard is required.
3. Check that ADB works
Using Command Prompt
- Right-click Start and open Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Change to the directory where you extracted Platform-Tools, then run adb –version.
- Run adb devices to check device detection.
For example, if you extracted the folder to C:\platform-tools, enter cd /d C:\platform-tools, then adb –version. Google notes that the current command reports the binary’s installation path.
Using PowerShell
PowerShell normally requires an explicit path to run an executable from the current directory. If Platform-Tools is in C:\platform-tools, run cd C:\platform-tools, then .\adb.exe –version and .\adb.exe devices.
Optional: Add ADB to Windows Path
Adding the Platform-Tools folder to the Windows Path variable lets you run ADB from any terminal directory. This is optional; you can run ADB from its folder instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Search Start for environment variables.
- Select Edit the system environment variables, then select Environment Variables.
- Under User variables, select Path, then Edit.
- Select New and enter the extracted folder path, such as C:\platform-tools.
- Select OK in each window, then close and reopen your terminal.
A USB driver does not add ADB to Path; these are separate tasks.

4. Enable USB debugging on your phone
- Open your phone’s Settings and go to About phone.
- Find Build number and tap it repeatedly until Developer options are enabled. The steps can vary by manufacturer.
- Return to Settings, open Developer options, and turn on USB debugging.
- Connect the unlocked phone to the PC with a USB data cable.
- If prompted with Allow USB debugging?, verify the computer’s RSA fingerprint and accept. You can choose to always allow your personal PC.
Android 4.2.2 and later requires the user to unlock the phone and accept the RSA authorization prompt before ADB commands can run. Prompt wording can vary by Android version and manufacturer.
5. Choose the correct Windows USB driver
- Google devices: use Google’s USB Driver.
- Other brands: use the driver provided by the phone manufacturer. Google’s OEM driver list links to several manufacturers.
- Some Android 11-and-later devices: may work through WinUSB support without a separate driver. This depends on the device and interface.
Google’s USB Driver is not universal. Avoid third-party “universal ADB” installers when an official Google or OEM driver is available.
6. Download the Google USB Driver
Use these steps for a Google device. For other brands, use the manufacturer’s driver.
Method 1: Download the ZIP
- Open Google’s Google USB Driver page.
- Select Download the Google USB Driver ZIP file (ZIP).
- Extract the ZIP to a known folder.
Method 2: Use Android Studio
- In Android Studio, select Tools > SDK Manager.
- Open the SDK Tools tab and select Google USB Driver.
- Select OK and allow Android Studio to install it.
Android Studio normally stores the driver in android_sdk\extras\google\usb_driver\.
7. Install the USB driver in Device Manager
- Connect and unlock the phone, enable USB debugging, and accept any RSA prompt.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Find the phone under Portable Devices, Other devices, Android Device, or a similar category.
- Right-click the phone or device with a warning icon and select Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers and choose the extracted Google or OEM driver folder. For Google’s SDK Manager driver, use android_sdk\extras\google\usb_driver\.
- Select Next to install the driver. Reconnect the phone if Device Manager does not refresh.
Older Google instructions use labels such as “Update Driver Software” and “Browse my computer for driver software.” Windows 11 uses “Update driver” and “Browse my computer for drivers.” The resulting interface may be named Android Composite ADB Interface, Android ADB Interface, Android Device, or an OEM-specific name.

Fix common ADB problems on Windows 11
“adb is not recognized”
Windows cannot find adb.exe in the current command search path. Run the command from the Platform-Tools folder or add that folder to Path, then open a new terminal. In PowerShell, use .\adb.exe devices. Installing a USB driver does not add ADB to Path.
The phone appears in File Explorer but not in ADB
File Explorer may be using the phone’s MTP file-transfer interface, which is different from ADB. Enable USB debugging, unlock the phone, accept the RSA prompt, and install the correct ADB driver.
Device Manager shows an unknown device or warning icon
Windows detected the USB hardware but has not assigned a usable driver. Select Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers and choose the correct Google or OEM driver folder. A charge-only or damaged cable can cause the same symptom.

The phone is not detected at all
- Try a known-good USB data cable; charging does not prove data works.
- Try another USB port, preferably one connected directly to the PC.
- Test the cable with another Android device.
- Confirm USB debugging is enabled and the phone is unlocked.
- Check Device Manager for an unknown device or warning icon.
Restart the ADB server
Run adb kill-server, adb start-server, then adb devices. If ADB is not in Path, run the commands from the Platform-Tools folder; in PowerShell, prefix the executable with .\.
Android Studio also provides Tools > Troubleshoot Device Connections. Its Connection Assistant includes Rescan USB devices and, on the final page, Restart ADB server.
ADB works, but fastboot does not
ADB and fastboot use different device interfaces. Platform-Tools includes both tools, but a phone may need a separate OEM bootloader or fastboot driver even when normal Android ADB works.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Alternative: wireless debugging
Android 11 and later supports wireless ADB. The phone and PC must be on the same Wi-Fi network, and pairing must be completed through Developer options > Wireless debugging. Wireless debugging avoids a USB driver but still requires Platform-Tools on the PC.

FAQ
Do I need Android Studio to install ADB on Windows 11?
No. Download Google’s standalone Platform-Tools ZIP, extract it, and run ADB from the platform-tools folder. Android Studio is optional.
Is ADB the same as the Google USB Driver?
No. ADB is part of Platform-Tools. The Google USB Driver is a separate Windows driver for compatible Google devices.
Which driver do I need for a non-Google phone?
Use the driver supplied by that phone’s manufacturer. Google’s USB Driver is not universal.
Why does Windows see my phone but adb devices shows nothing?
Windows may see the MTP file-transfer interface while the ADB interface is disabled or missing its driver. Enable USB debugging, accept the RSA prompt, and install the correct driver.
What does unauthorized mean in adb devices?
The phone has not authorized the PC’s RSA key. Unlock the phone and accept the USB debugging prompt. If needed, revoke authorizations and reconnect.
Do I need to add Platform-Tools to Path?
No. Path is optional. You can run ADB from the platform-tools folder; adding it to Path lets you run ADB elsewhere.
Can I use ADB without installing a USB driver?
Some Android 11-and-later devices work through WinUSB without a separate driver. This depends on the device and interface.
The Bottom Line
Download Google’s SDK Platform-Tools for Windows and extract it to get ADB. Enable USB debugging, install the appropriate Google or manufacturer USB driver if needed, and run adb devices. A device listed with the state device indicates the setup is working.
