Lavish Sheth’s Dose Buddy prototype turns typed prescription directions or a prescription photo into a proposed medicine schedule using Gemma 3 (4B) on a local computer. A person must review and correct the result before saving; the app then provides reminders through a calendar export or desktop notifications. It is a reminder aid, not validated prescribing software: check every proposed detail against the original prescription and ask a pharmacist or prescriber if anything is uncertain.
What Dose Buddy does
Dose Buddy accepts either typed instructions or an uploaded prescription image. It asks a language model to extract structured details such as medicine name, dose, times, and days, then presents those details in an editable table. The user can correct the entries before saving a schedule.
The project author describes the workflow and safeguards in the Dose Buddy project submission. The key distinction is that the model proposes a schedule; it does not verify that the schedule is medically correct.
How the local AI workflow works
Model and application
The documented stack is Gemma 3 (4B), served through Ollama, with a Streamlit interface and Python code. The author’s setup instructions pull the gemma3:4b model, launch the Streamlit app, and run a separate reminder script. The author reports running the model and application on a laptop. The project does not specify minimum operating-system, processor, memory, storage, or graphics requirements, so compatibility and performance on a particular computer are not established.

- 7 DAY PILL ORGANIZER: Weekly Pill sorter helps you to easily plan and distribute your daily doses
- EASY USE: Large Travel compartments, perfect for taking your pill Organizer on the go
- PILL CAPACITY: Holds up to 22 pills per compartment (aspirin-sized)
- BUILT TO LAST: Quality design, built to withstand repeated use
- HEALTHY LIVING: Amazon Basic Care products make living healthier simply easier
In this project, “local” describes the AI-processing step: according to the author, the prescription text or image is processed on the laptop through Ollama, without a cloud AI service or API key. That is not a blanket guarantee that every feature or device integration is offline. The project also mentions optional Telegram messages, which require internet access.
Review and unclear readings
The author says the prompt asks the model to reproduce medicine names and doses as written and return UNCLEAR when text cannot be read; rows marked unclear are refused at save time. The table is intended to let a person inspect and edit the extracted details first. These are author-reported design safeguards, not evidence that the software catches every transcription mistake.

- AM/PM COMPARTMENTS: Plan doses for morning and evening with separate AM/PM compartments
- LARGE CAPACITY: Each compartment can hold 12 aspirin sized tablets
- CONTOURED BOTTOMS: Planner compartments have contoured bottoms so retrieving your medication out of the planner is simple
- CLEAR LIDS: Clear planner lids keep your medication visable to help prevent missed doses
- HEALTHY LIVING: Amazon Basic Care products make living healthier simply easier
Handwriting, blur, or other image problems can lead a small model to misread instructions. As Sheth puts it: “Small models need guardrails. Telling the model to say UNCLEAR instead of guessing, and forcing a human review, matters more than any prompt cleverness.” Review the proposed medicine, dose, timing, and days against the original directions rather than relying on the model’s confidence or a readable-looking table.
How reminders are delivered
Calendar-file reminders
Dose Buddy can export an ICS calendar file with a repeating alarm for each dose. The person can import that file into a compatible phone calendar or reminder app. The project describes the export, but does not establish identical import behavior across calendar apps or devices; check the imported events and alarms on your own device.

Desktop notifications
A separate Python script can show desktop notifications. Because those alerts come from a script running on the computer, the laptop must be on and the script active when a reminder is due. The project also mentions optional Telegram messages, but they require an internet connection.
What has—and has not—been validated
The author reports testing parsing, scheduling, and calendar-export scripts, running the full app with Ollama, using a labelled sample prescription image, and setting a reminder a few minutes ahead to observe the desktop script fire. These are self-reported checks of the prototype’s workflow. The project submission does not report an independent evaluation, clinical review, prescription-reading error rate, or measured accuracy.

The Gemma paper describes lightweight open models based on research and technology used to create Gemini and reports evaluations on academic language tasks and safety work. Those results do not establish how accurately Dose Buddy reads prescriptions or whether its proposed schedules are safe. See the Gemma research paper for the model-family context; it is not a clinical validation of this application.

Dose Buddy is best understood as a developer’s local-first prototype for turning written instructions into editable reminders. It may help organize a schedule after a person has checked it, but it should not interpret an ambiguous prescription, decide a dose, or replace advice from a pharmacist or prescriber. If the model returns UNCLEAR, if the image is difficult to read, or if any extracted instruction differs from the original, do not save or follow the uncertain schedule; confirm the directions with a qualified professional.
