DoorDash says its drone effort began with the merchant workflow, not the aircraft: how orders are prepared, packed, loaded, and handed off, and how that process fits the delivery network. The drone is only one part of a system that also includes restaurants, customers, routing software, partner fleets, and Dashers.
Why DoorDash started with merchant operations
A drone can fly an order only after a restaurant has prepared it, packed it for transport, and transferred it safely at the right time. DoorDash says it began by working on those ground-side requirements—loading systems, kitchen-to-aircraft handoffs, packaging, and order data—so the service could fit local businesses’ existing operations.
That order-first approach also shaped the aircraft and packaging. DoorDash says it used patterns in historical order size, weight, and distance to design for the deliveries it expects drones to handle. Its estimate that about 80% of typical U.S. restaurant orders are small and light enough for its aircraft applies to restaurant deliveries within limited distance and size parameters and a specified measurement period; it is not a claim that 80% of all DoorDash orders can fly. DoorDash Air announcement
DoorDash reported an average restaurant-to-consumer time of under five minutes in initial DoorDash Air tests. That figure is for a limited sample of U.S. Marketplace deliveries of limited distance and size, and is not a delivery-time guarantee. It is separate from DoorDash’s estimate of a 25-minute average for drone deliveries in 2025, which covers a different group of deliveries. How DoorDash drone delivery works
DoorDash describes its Autonomous Delivery Platform (ADP) as the software layer that considers an order’s distance, weight, and contents, then coordinates preparation, delivery timing, and routing. It can match an order to an available delivery mode rather than treating a drone as the default for every trip.
In DoorDash’s description, the ADP chooses “the fastest and most reliable way” to reach a consumer while accounting for kitchen preparation and routing. The company says its broader network brings together Dashers, autonomous robots, and drones. DoorDash on its Autonomous Delivery Platform

For a customer, the practical process is simpler: enter an address in DoorDash and look for participating merchants or eligible orders shown in the app. Eligibility depends on the address, participating merchant, and order meeting size and weight requirements. A drone announcement or past pilot in a city does not mean every address or order there qualifies.
DoorDash Air and Wing are different parts of the strategy
DoorDash’s in-house DoorDash Air program and its drone-delivery work with Wing are distinct approaches within the same broader network. DoorDash says its own aircraft complement partner designs rather than replace them. The distinctions that matter are who operates the aircraft, how the merchant handoff works, what service area is covered, which trips and loads qualify, and how each mode connects to DoorDash’s routing and Dasher operations. What the reported numbers do—and do not—show
DoorDash has shared figures intended to describe the potential and early performance of drone delivery. They are company estimates or pilot reports, not independent measurements, and their populations differ:
- About 80%: DoorDash’s 2026 estimate for the share of typical U.S. restaurant orders that are small and light enough for its aircraft, restricted to limited-distance and limited-size deliveries and a defined measurement period. DoorDash Air announcement
- Under five minutes: DoorDash’s average restaurant-to-consumer time in initial DoorDash Air tests, for a limited sample of U.S. Marketplace deliveries with limited distance and size. DoorDash Air announcement
- 25 minutes: DoorDash’s separate estimate of the average time for drone deliveries in 2025, reported in 2026. It should not be conflated with the initial DoorDash Air test result. DoorDash Air expansion announcement
- More than 20% and nearly 25%: DoorDash said more than 20% of its platform orders in 2025 traveled three to five miles, and those orders took nearly 25% longer on average than shorter deliveries. This is company-reported platform context for why faster modes may be useful on some trips, not a drone-specific result. DoorDash platform announcement
- Roughly 30%: DoorDash reported this order-volume growth at some partner drone-pilot locations, sustained during the nine weeks after launch. It is a report about certain locations, not a general forecast for restaurants. DoorDash platform announcement
- Tens of thousands: DoorDash reported that the Wing partnership had completed this many deliveries since its initial launch, as of the 2025 announcement. Charlotte announcement
Why this matters to restaurants and customers
The ground-first strategy addresses a constraint that aircraft specifications alone cannot solve: the handoff has to work for a busy kitchen. DoorDash’s stated goal is to make drone delivery fit existing merchant operations; Popeyes Louisiana Kitchens’ Chief Digital Officer James Huang said the company believed DoorDash Air could deliver food hot and fast “without asking our restaurant teams to change a thing.” That is a partner’s expectation, not proof that every restaurant workflow requires no changes. For customers, the intended benefit is another delivery option for suitable short-distance orders. The system’s value depends on the complete chain—eligible food, packaging, pickup timing, aircraft availability, and a serviceable destination—not simply on a drone’s ability to fly. When the conditions do not fit, DoorDash’s multimodal model leaves room for other delivery methods.
What to expect next
DoorDash’s 2026 announcement of an FAA-authorized air-carrier status for its own commercial drone program marks a step in the company’s move beyond partner pilots. It does not, by itself, establish broad availability or guarantee a launch date for any particular address. DoorDash’s stated direction is to integrate its own aircraft with partner systems and the rest of its delivery network, while offering drone service only where the order and operating conditions qualify.
