DoorDash’s text-ordering option is a limited U.S. pilot of an AI Assistant, not a universal way to complete an order entirely by SMS. For eligible account holders, it can suggest food and household items and help build a cart from conversational prompts. You still need to review the cart and complete checkout. The standard app and website offer the familiar item-selection flow, documented customization options, and order tracking.
What DoorDash means by “text ordering”
DoorDash describes the feature as a pilot AI-powered Assistant. Instead of browsing menus or product listings first, you can send a text prompt describing what you want. The Assistant can suggest meal ideas, help find items, reorder familiar meals, add groceries or household products to a cart, and help plan meals. Example requests include finding a cozy meal, snacks for children, or ingredients for spaghetti carbonara.
This makes discovery and cart-building conversational; DoorDash’s description does not establish that you can finish a purchase just by exchanging texts. You remain responsible for checking the cart and proceeding through checkout.

Who can use text ordering?
As of October 4, 2026, DoorDash describes access as limited to select account holders in the United States. It does not publish a full eligibility list or identify every participating U.S. market in the reviewed feature information, so having a DoorDash account does not guarantee that the Assistant is available to you. Availability may differ by account while the pilot is limited.

Review the cart carefully before checkout
DoorDash cautions that the Assistant can make mistakes and that its suggestions rely on product information that may not be up to date. Before checkout, verify that each item is the one you intended and that its size, quantity, and other requirements are correct.
- For allergies, ingredients, or nutrition concerns, check the product’s physical packaging or confirm details with the restaurant. Do not treat an AI suggestion as authoritative dietary information.
- For prepared food, use any available item-level instructions in the standard ordering flow when needed; the restaurant may not accommodate every request, and a request may affect the total.
Does texting change the price or fees?
DoorDash’s feature information does not establish that text ordering has different prices or fees from app or website ordering. Fees can depend on the merchant, DashPass membership, local regulations, and the rollout of fee changes. Compare the final amount shown at your own checkout rather than assuming either channel is cheaper.

DashPass is not described as a requirement for either ordering method. Its benefits apply only to eligible merchants and orders that meet the minimum subtotal displayed to the customer; check the app or website to see whether a particular order qualifies.
How to track an order placed through the standard flow
- In the DoorDash app: Open Orders and select the order to see its status and estimated arrival.
- When a Dasher has accepted: The app may display a map and text or call controls.
- On the website: Select the order, choose Help, then choose Order Status.
An order generally moves through confirmation, restaurant preparation, and the Dasher’s route to you. An order delivered by the merchant itself may not be trackable through DoorDash.

Text-message and privacy considerations
DoorDash says recurring automated messages may be sent when you text the Assistant, and message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out or HELP for help. DoorDash says messages are processed by the company and its messaging provider and may be used to personalize the experience; it also says you can ask the Assistant to forget information. The feature is subject to DoorDash’s consumer terms and privacy policy.
