There is no single Windows 11 switch that removes every AI feature. The right control depends on what you mean by “AI”: Recall snapshots, Click to Do, the Copilot app or Microsoft 365 Copilot. Some controls stop a feature, some hide an entry point, and only some remove the feature itself.

First, identify which AI feature you want to change

A taskbar icon or keyboard shortcut is only an entry point; hiding it does not necessarily disable the feature. Recall and Click to Do are available on eligible Copilot+ PCs, while Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot have separate app and account controls. Microsoft’s support pages were checked on October 8, 2026; their publication dates are generally not stated, and availability can vary by Windows device, app version, account type, region, and language.

Feature What you can do Scope
Recall Stop or pause snapshot saving, reset its data, or remove Recall through Windows Features Eligible Copilot+ PCs
Click to Do Switch it off in Settings; Microsoft says it cannot be removed Copilot+ PCs
Copilot app Change how you open it; the cited Microsoft guidance does not establish a Windows-wide removal procedure Windows app and its shortcuts
Microsoft 365 Copilot Turn it off separately in supported desktop apps for personal Microsoft accounts Each app and device

How to stop or remove Recall

Recall is a Copilot+ PC feature. Microsoft says saving snapshots is off by default and requires the user to opt in. Its stated system requirements are a 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB RAM, and 256 GB storage capacity. Microsoft also says at least 50 GB of free space is needed to enable Recall, and automatic snapshot saving pauses when free space drops below 25 GB. These are Microsoft-published requirements and thresholds; the support page’s publication year is not stated. See Microsoft’s Recall and snapshots instructions.

Stop saving snapshots

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots.
  2. Switch Save snapshots off. You can also pause saving temporarily from Recall’s controls.

Remove Recall and its saved snapshots

  1. Search Windows for Turn Windows features on or off and open the matching result.
  2. Clear the checkbox for Recall, then restart the PC when prompted.

Microsoft says removing Recall deletes snapshots previously saved by the feature.

Delete snapshots and reset Recall settings without removing the feature

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots > Advanced settings.
  2. Select Reset Recall.

Microsoft says this deletes snapshots and resets Recall settings. It does not delete snapshots you previously exported or shared with another app or website.

How to disable Click to Do

Microsoft states, “While it can’t be removed, you can disable or enable it from the following location:” Open Settings > Privacy & security > Click to Do and set it to Off. Microsoft says the Windows key + mouse click, Windows key + Q, and right-swipe entry points will then no longer open Click to Do. An entry may still appear elsewhere, such as in Snipping Tool. See Microsoft’s Click to Do guidance.

Click to Do’s actions vary by region and language. Microsoft’s page lists some actions as unavailable in the European Economic Area and China, so the options on your device may differ.

Copilot app: shortcuts are not the same as removal

Microsoft says the Copilot app is installed by default on new Windows 11 PCs and can be opened from Start or the taskbar. It also documents opening Copilot with the Copilot key or Windows key + C, with shortcut behavior configurable in Copilot settings. See Microsoft’s Copilot on Windows instructions.

Those instructions explain access and shortcuts; they do not establish a Windows-wide process for removing every Copilot capability. Unpinning the taskbar icon, changing a shortcut, or adjusting privacy settings should not be treated as uninstalling Copilot. App uninstall options may depend on your Windows build and Copilot app version.

Turn off Microsoft 365 Copilot in supported apps

For supported Windows desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, Microsoft documents an Enable Copilot checkbox for users signed in with a personal Microsoft account. The setting applies only to the individual app and device. It is unavailable in the described settings when signed in with a work or school account. See Microsoft’s instructions for turning off Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps.

Removing the Copilot icon from an Office ribbon only hides the icon; Microsoft says that does not turn off Copilot.

Copilot privacy settings control account data, not Windows features

Privacy controls are separate from removing or disabling a Windows feature. Microsoft’s personal-account privacy information describes settings for personalization and memory, model-training use, personalized advertising, and conversation history. The page applies only to the older Copilot app and directs users of the updated app, available as of August 18, 2026, to a different privacy page. Because the available controls and menu paths depend on app version, use the privacy information for the Copilot app you actually have rather than relying on an older menu path. See Microsoft’s Copilot privacy controls information.
