Before you discard an old digital camera, check whether it still works, save any photos you want to keep, and remove its memory card. Keep using or pass on a working camera if you can; if it is broken or no one will take it, find an electronics recycling route in your area. Handle removable batteries separately when local rules and the battery type require it.
First, decide whether the camera can still be used
Try the camera and check its battery, charger, buttons, screen, and storage. If it works and you still enjoy using it, keeping it in service is a practical option. If it needs repair, check whether model-specific service is available before deciding; repair costs and resale value depend on the camera and are not established by a universal rule.
A working camera you no longer need may suit a local charity or community group. Ask first: acceptance varies, and an organization may have requirements for working condition, accessories, or the models it can use. The City of Calgary’s camera guidance recommends reusing working cameras and checking with charities about what they accept. The U.S. EPA’s electronics donation and recycling guidance also describes donation as an option, but neither source guarantees that a particular organization will accept your camera.
Protect your photos and personal data before handoff
- Save anything you want to keep. Copy photos and videos from the camera or card to a location you control, then confirm the files open.
- Remove the memory card. Keep it, securely erase it, or dispose of it through an appropriate route. Calgary specifically advises removing memory cards before recycling a camera.
- Check for internal storage. Consult the manual for your camera’s exact model and use its data-removal procedure. Sony Support Japan warns that formatting or deleting files may not completely erase data on the products covered by its guidance, and recommends additional steps for internal storage. This advice is specific to Sony’s covered products; do not assume the same procedure applies to another make or model. See Sony Support Japan’s data-handling guidance.
Choose a next step based on the camera’s condition
| Situation | Practical next step | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| It works and you want to use it | Keep it in service | Save your photos and check the battery’s condition. |
| It works, but you no longer need it | Ask a charity or community group about donation; consider resale if appropriate | Whether it accepts the camera, its condition and accessories, and whether your data has been removed. |
| It is broken or no reuse option fits | Look for local electronics recycling or an available retailer or manufacturer take-back program | Your municipality’s rules and whether the collection site accepts cameras. |
| It has a removable battery | Identify the battery chemistry and use a designated collection route where required | Battery label, local instructions, and household hazardous-waste options. |
| The battery is damaged or cannot be removed | Ask the manufacturer or local waste authority how to handle it | Do not put a rechargeable battery in ordinary trash or municipal recycling unless local guidance explicitly allows it. |
Find the right recycling route if reuse is not an option
Electronics collection is local. Calgary, Alberta, directs residents to take old and broken cameras to an electronics recycling drop-off and says not to put electronics in its blue cart. That is Calgary-specific guidance, not a rule for every city. Check your municipal waste authority’s current instructions or ask a retailer or manufacturer whether it offers take-back. The EPA likewise points U.S. residents toward local donation and recycling information; its guidance does not confirm that any particular nearby provider accepts cameras.

If you are choosing a recycler, certification can help with screening. The EPA identifies R2 and e-Stewards as accredited electronics-recycler certification standards and notes that certified recyclers are audited and keep data-erasure records. Certification alone does not establish that a provider accepts cameras, so confirm acceptance and any preparation requirements directly. See the EPA’s electronics and batteries information.

Some digital cameras use rechargeable batteries, and the correct disposal route depends on battery chemistry, whether it can be removed, and local rules. Check the label and your waste authority’s instructions rather than assuming a battery belongs in household trash or curbside recycling. The U.S. EPA advises taking rechargeable household batteries to specialized battery recyclers, participating retailer take-back programs, or local household hazardous-waste programs. Its guidance is U.S.-specific; follow the rules where you live. See the EPA’s used household battery guidance.
