If you’re considering leaving X, you can join Bluesky without an invite and start exploring its feeds, accounts, and moderation controls right away. This guide walks you through setup and the first useful steps, while keeping expectations realistic: Bluesky offers different ways to shape your timeline, but switching does not automatically move your X posts, followers, or identity.
How do I sign up for Bluesky?
Anyone can create an account at bsky.app; an invite is not required. Bluesky Support’s instructions, updated April 6, 2026, use this flow:
- Open bsky.app and choose Create a new account.
- Enter your email address and create a password.
- Choose a handle and complete the remaining signup prompts.
You can begin with a standard Bluesky handle. Using your own domain as a username is optional, not a prerequisite.
How do I find people to follow?
Start with people you already know are on Bluesky, then use recommendations to discover more accounts. A feed is a timeline you can browse; a Starter Pack is a shareable collection of account and feed recommendations.

Use a Starter Pack from someone you trust
Bluesky’s Starter Packs can recommend up to 150 people and three custom feeds. Because packs do not currently appear in Bluesky search, you’ll generally need a link from someone or a pack shared elsewhere. Bluesky can also show an in-app embed preview when a pack is shared. Check who made a pack before following its recommendations, and treat its list as a starting point rather than a required community to join. These limits and discovery details are product features that may change.
Follow selectively
Follow a handful of accounts whose posts you want to see, then adjust as your timeline develops. If you’re looking for a particular person, check that the account is theirs rather than assuming a matching handle is authentic.

How do I explore Bluesky feeds?
Bluesky Support says you can discover custom feeds under My Feeds. Custom feeds let you choose different algorithms or topics for your timelines, so you can explore alternatives without building a feed yourself. Try a few that match your interests and decide which ones are useful to keep in view.
Bluesky’s FAQ says, “Anyone can build a feed, and there are currently over 40,000 algorithmic feeds to choose from.” That is a company statement accessed October 8, 2026, not an independently verified count, and it may change.

How do mute, block, and report work?
These controls address different situations. Bluesky Support describes their effects as follows:

| Mute | Hides notifications and top-level posts from an account without notifying that account. | You want less visibility from an account without preventing it from seeing or interacting with your posts. |
| Block | Prevents the two accounts from seeing or interacting with each other’s posts. | You want to stop contact and visibility between the accounts. |
| Report | Lets you report posts or accounts. | You believe content or behavior should be reviewed under Bluesky’s rules. |
Bluesky’s Community Guidelines say the service uses human moderators alongside automated systems, offers customizable moderation options, and remains responsible for baseline rules and enforcement decisions. Your personal moderation settings can shape your experience; they do not replace platform moderation.

What carries over if I leave X for Bluesky?
Bluesky is built on AT Protocol. Bluesky describes it as “a protocol for public conversation and an open-source framework for building social apps, meaning people have transparency into how it is built and what is being developed.” The company says the protocol uses standard formats for identity, follows, and data, with account portability as a design feature.
That describes portability within the AT Protocol ecosystem; it is not a promise that everything transfers without friction. The cited official materials do not establish that X posts, followers, or identity can be imported wholesale into Bluesky. If you are deciding whether to switch, expect to build your Bluesky account and following separately unless a specific transfer method is documented for the content or connection you want to move.

Bluesky’s FAQ reported more than 44 million users as of May 2026. That is a company-published figure, not evidence that your particular friends, professional network, or favorite accounts have moved there. Look for the people and communities you actually want to follow.
Do I need a custom-domain handle?
No. Bluesky says users can use their own domain as a username, but you can start with a standard handle instead. A domain-based handle is an optional identity choice; it does not need to be part of your initial setup.
