For U.S. industrial supplier discovery, Thomasnet is a practical starting point; for global wholesale sourcing, Alibaba.com offers seller discovery, RFQs, negotiation, and eligible protected orders. For custom parts, Xometry and MFG focus more directly on digital quoting and manufacturer RFQs. None should be treated as interchangeable: verify where the specific order will be made, what the platform actually does, and whether the quote covers the same requirements.
How the four platforms differ
| Platform | Best fit | How the workflow works | Geography and evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thomasnet | Finding and comparing industrial suppliers, especially for buyers seeking North American or U.S. companies. | Search suppliers, filter by capabilities, certifications, and business type, shortlist candidates, then contact them directly by RFI, website, or phone. Thomas says buyers can compare up to five selected suppliers and send the same quote request to as many as 20 suppliers. | Thomas describes a network of 500,000+ North American suppliers. Its Made in America page reports more than 500,000 U.S.-based suppliers and 80,000+ manufacturing products and services. These are platform-reported counts, not independent audits. | Alibaba.com | Global wholesale sourcing, including finding sellers, requesting quotes, and discussing customization. | Search products and sellers or submit an RFQ, contact sellers, negotiate, place an order, and arrange payment and shipping. Eligible orders may qualify for Trade Assurance when the buyer follows the applicable order and payment requirements. | A global marketplace; a listing does not establish that goods are U.S.-made. Trade Assurance protections are tied to the eligible order terms and current program rules. Alibaba Buyer Central Trade Assurance |
| Xometry | On-demand custom manufacturing and digital quoting across processes, materials, and volumes. | Upload a part design or specification and use the digital quoting and production workflow. | Xometry describes a U.S. and global supplier network with 5,000+ suppliers and a test-part and further-review process. These are company claims, not independent audits; confirm the factory location for the specific job if domestic production is required. Xometry Partner network |
| MFG.com | RFQs for custom metal, plastic, and rubber parts. | Submit an RFQ and compare quotes from manufacturers matched to location, capabilities, and certifications. MFG also describes electronic NDAs and quote and order workflows. | MFG is a global marketplace. Buyers with a domestic-only requirement should specify it and verify the actual production site for every candidate. MFG help center |

Start with Thomasnet for supplier discovery
Thomasnet functions primarily as a searchable supplier directory and outreach tool. Its filters and shortlist workflow can help build a candidate list, but a profile or listed certification is not a substitute for confirming current capability, location, and qualification directly with the supplier. Thomas says its Made in America listing is part of an SBA-cosponsored activity; the page also says it is not an official U.S. government website and that SBA participation does not imply endorsement.
Use Alibaba.com for global wholesale sourcing
Alibaba.com is built around discovering sellers and products, contacting suppliers, requesting quotes, negotiating, and managing orders. Buyers can discuss customization and request samples. For a transaction that may rely on Trade Assurance, put measurable specifications, quality requirements, and shipment dates in the online order, keep relevant communications on-platform, and follow the order’s current eligibility and payment rules. Trade Assurance is not a general guarantee of supplier quality or a replacement for supplier qualification.
Consider Xometry or MFG for custom-part workflows
Xometry emphasizes digital quoting and on-demand production. MFG emphasizes RFQs and quote comparison for custom metal, plastic, and rubber parts. These services are closer to a custom-part quoting and production workflow than a broad industrial directory, but a platform’s network or matching process does not remove the need to confirm facility location, process fit, and quality requirements.
How to compare suppliers and quotes fairly
- Define one common RFQ. Include the drawing or specification, material, manufacturing process, tolerances, quantity breaks, annual forecast, target delivery date, required certifications, packaging, destination, and acceptance or inspection method.
- Ask who will make the part. Have each candidate identify the actual producing facility and state whether it is the manufacturer, a broker, or a distributor. Confirm the country of production in writing rather than inferring it from a platform’s name or domestic-facing page.
- Normalize the quote scope. Compare tooling or non-recurring engineering (NRE), setup, unit prices at the same quantities, finishing, inspection, packaging, freight, applicable duties and taxes, and delivery terms. A headline unit price is not comparable if the scope or landed cost differs.
- Qualify the supplier. Check relevant capacity, references or samples, quality controls, inspection plans, and certifications; verify certifications with the issuing body when necessary. Set confidentiality and intellectual-property expectations before sharing sensitive files.
- Put acceptance and remedies in writing. Record specifications, quality thresholds, schedule, delivery terms, remedies, and communication obligations in the purchase documents. Any platform-based protection is limited to its stated terms.
- Review before production. Where risk or part complexity warrants it, request a sample or agree on an inspection plan before authorizing a production run.
What the reported supplier counts can—and cannot—tell you
Thomas reports 500,000+ suppliers on its North American network and, on its Made in America page, more than 500,000 U.S.-based suppliers and 80,000+ manufacturing products and services. Xometry reports 5,000+ manufacturing suppliers on its live company materials. These figures come from the platforms, are not independently audited, and do not use a verified like-for-like counting method. They do not establish which service has lower prices, shorter lead times, fewer defects, or a larger share of domestic production.
#1 Best Overall
Bottom line for a domestic sourcing search
Use Thomasnet to discover and shortlist industrial suppliers; use Alibaba.com when global wholesale sourcing and seller negotiation are central; consider Xometry or MFG when you need a digital custom-part quote or manufacturer RFQ. For any domestic-only requirement, make factory location an explicit written condition and compare fully scoped quotes against the same specification.
