Zig can still compile for supported targets independently of the host, subject to the project’s dependencies and configuration.
What does Zig’s process split change?
Andrew Kelley’s June 26, 2026 devlog describes a separation of responsibilities around the familiar zig build command. Although the change is often called a “two-process” split, the devlog’s process tree names three levels:
zig build (the zig compiler)
└─ maker (build system + package manager)
└─ configurer (the user's build.zig logic)
The maker process can remain alive when build configuration needs to run again because it is the configurer’s parent. Kelley described the change as “almost entirely a non-breaking change.” It affects orchestration and package management, not the target requested for an artifact. The devlog also reports a 4% reduction in Zig executable size—from 14.1 MiB to 13.5 MiB in a no-LLVM ReleaseSmall build—but that is a binary-size comparison, not a cross-compilation performance result. Zig maintainer devlog, June 26, 2026
How does Zig choose a cross-compilation target?
Cross-compilation depends on the target configured for an artifact, not on whether the build script evaluator shares a process with the build-system implementation. Zig’s official overview says, “Zig builds for all supported targets independently of the host,” and demonstrates compiling for x86_64 Windows, x86_64 macOS, and aarch64 Linux. Zig language overview

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Using the build system
A project’s build.zig can obtain a target through standard target options and apply it to an artifact. For example, the build-system documentation shows selecting a Windows target with -Dtarget=x86_64-windows. Build scripts can also define multiple artifacts or tests for different targets. Zig build-system documentation
Compiling directly
A direct compiler invocation specifies the target with -target, such as zig build-exe -target x86_64-windows. In contrast, zig build runs the project’s build script and follows its configured artifacts and options. These are different ways to configure a build, not different levels of cross-compilation support. Zig language overview Zig build-system documentation

Does this mean every project will cross-compile automatically?
No. Zig’s stated support for building supported targets independently of the host does not remove project-specific requirements. A target build can still depend on whether the project’s build logic supports that target, whether required dependencies are available, and how the project links libraries. The build-system documentation discusses choosing between Zig-provided libraries and host system libraries; that choice and library availability can affect a particular build. Zig build-system documentation
What about cross-compiled tests?
Compiling a test binary for another target and running it on the current host are separate steps. Zig’s build-system documentation describes configuring a run step to skip execution when the host cannot run the target binary. If you need to execute those tests, you may need an emulator, remote device, or other runner; alternatively, configure the build to skip that run step. A test binary that cannot run natively does not mean it failed to cross-compile. Zig build-system documentation
