Ordinary Windows operation and diagnostics do not periodically save screenshots of your screen. The important built-in exception is Recall, available on Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. Recall can save screen snapshots periodically, but saving is off by default for each new user and starts only after that user opts in. Separately installed applications, remote-access software, security tools, malware, or workplace management software may capture screen content according to their own settings.
What can actually capture your screen?
“Windows” is not one single capture process. Several different mechanisms can be involved, and they have different controls and privacy implications.

This is why an absolute statement such as “Windows can never take a screenshot” is too broad. The accurate answer is that Windows does not normally create a hidden, periodic screenshot archive, while an opted-in Windows feature or other software can.
Recall is the built-in feature to check first
Recall is a Windows 11 experience exclusive to Copilot+ PCs. It can save snapshots of what appears on the screen at intervals, allowing the user to retrace previous activity. Microsoft Support states: “If you don’t choose to opt in, it will be off by default and snapshots will not be saved.” That opt-in requirement applies to each new user profile.

Recall snapshots are different from diagnostic telemetry. Microsoft says Recall processes snapshots locally and does not share them with Microsoft or third parties during normal use. That statement applies to Recall snapshots; it does not mean that no other Windows data is transmitted. Diagnostic data follows the privacy choices configured for Windows, and a screenshot that a user deliberately attaches to Recall feedback is sent with that feedback.
How to see whether Recall is saving snapshots
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Recall & snapshots.
- Check the Save snapshots setting.
If the setting is on, Recall is enabled for that user. If the page is missing, the PC may not be a supported Copilot+ device, the feature may be unavailable in that Windows configuration, or an administrator may have restricted it.
How to stop, pause or remove Recall snapshots
- Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots.
- Turn Save snapshots off to stop new snapshots.
- Use Recall’s pause control when you need a temporary stop rather than a permanent change.
- Review filtering controls for particular applications and websites.
- Use the available retention and storage controls to limit how long or where snapshots are kept.
- Open Recall’s management controls to delete snapshots that already exist.
Turning off future saving and deleting existing snapshots are separate actions: disabling the switch stops new captures, while deletion removes saved material you no longer want on the PC.
Windows diagnostics are not the same as screenshots
Microsoft’s diagnostic documentation describes required data as information about device configuration, capabilities and whether the system is working. Optional diagnostic data can include website and device activity. Crash reports can include memory state, which may unintentionally contain portions of a file that was in memory at the time.

Those categories can raise legitimate privacy questions, but the cited Windows documentation does not characterize them as a periodic screenshot service. A memory fragment in a crash report is not the same mechanism as saving an image of the entire screen at regular intervals. Keep the distinction in mind when reviewing privacy settings or explaining what data leaves a device.
What to check when you find an unexplained image
If you discover image files or suspect that someone is viewing your desktop, work through the local possibilities rather than assuming Windows itself is responsible.
1. Check Recall for every Windows user
Sign in to each relevant account and inspect Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots. A setting changed for one user does not establish the setting for another. If the device is shared, check each profile that has access.
2. Review recently installed and currently running software
Look for screen recorders, remote-support clients, meeting utilities, screenshot managers, browser companions and other tools that advertise recording or remote control. Check their startup entries, scheduled tasks and in-app capture preferences. If you do not recognize a program, do not delete system files at random; identify its publisher and use a normal uninstall path or obtain help from the device administrator.

3. Consider organization management
A company or school may install endpoint-management, remote-help or monitoring software. Managed Windows settings can also hide or enforce Recall controls. On an organization-owned device, ask the administrator what software and policies are deployed before changing security or management components.
4. Check security findings
Review alerts and scan results from the security software already installed on the PC. Malware can capture screens, but the supplied Windows documentation does not let anyone diagnose malware on a particular computer remotely. If you suspect compromise, disconnect sensitive accounts from the device, preserve relevant alerts and contact a qualified administrator or security professional.
5. Inspect the location and timestamps of files
File names, creation times, folder paths and the account that owns a file can help distinguish a user-initiated screenshot from an application’s output. These clues are investigative evidence, not proof by themselves: applications can rename files, and cloud-sync software can move or duplicate them.
Privacy limits and practical expectations
Recall’s local processing reduces one specific concern: Microsoft says normal Recall snapshots remain on the device rather than being shared with Microsoft or third parties. It does not provide a blanket guarantee about all information on Windows. Diagnostics may still be sent according to your privacy settings, and any image you attach to feedback is transmitted with that feedback.

A privacy filter, webcam shutter or covering the camera does not prevent software from capturing the contents of the display. Those accessories address people looking at the screen or camera input, not an operating-system or application screen-capture function.

“I have Windows 11, but I cannot find Recall.”
Recall is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs, not every Windows 11 computer. The feature may also be restricted by an administrator or unavailable in the installed configuration. Confirm the PC model and account context, then ask the organization’s administrator if the device is managed.
“I turned off Save snapshots, but old images remain.”
Turning off the switch stops future saving. Use Recall’s deletion controls separately to remove snapshots that were already saved.
“Diagnostics are enabled, so is Windows taking screenshots?”
Not according to the cited diagnostics description. Diagnostics can include device, website or activity information and crash memory state, but that documentation does not describe periodic full-screen screenshots. Recall and third-party software are separate possibilities to investigate.

“The Recall setting is locked or missing.”
Managed policies can control or hide settings. On a work or school PC, contact the administrator. On a personal PC, install pending Windows updates, confirm that you are checking the correct user profile and verify whether the hardware is a supported Copilot+ PC.
“I found screenshots, but Recall is off.”
Look for another user profile, an installed capture or remote-access application, a workplace tool, or a security incident. Windows’ ordinary diagnostics are not enough to explain a folder of periodic image files.
