No—Microsoft’s release notes for Windows 10 KB5053606 do not say it fixes broken SSH connections. The update, released March 11, 2025, covers Windows 10 builds 19044.5608 and 19045.5608. Microsoft documented the OpenSSH service failure and related fixes in other update articles, not this one. KB5053606 is also no longer available through Microsoft release channels.

What KB5053606 documents

Microsoft lists KB5053606 as a March 11, 2025 security update with quality improvements for Windows 10 version 22H2, Enterprise LTSC 2021, and IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021. It corresponds to OS builds 19044.5608 and 19045.5608. The release notes do not list an OpenSSH repair for these editions; for 22H2 and LTSC, Microsoft says no additional issues are documented for the release. Microsoft’s KB5053606 release notes

Which updates mention the SSH problem?

Microsoft separately documented an OpenSSH service startup failure after the October 2024 security update. When the service failed to start, SSH connections could be blocked; the service could fail without detailed logging and require manual intervention to run sshd.exe. Microsoft’s Windows 11 update documentation points to KB5052094 as addressing the issue. Microsoft’s KB5050092 notes

Other Microsoft update articles also list OpenSSH fixes, but their scope is different from KB5053606:

  • KB5053603 and KB5053599: March 11, 2025 Windows Server update notes list a fix for the OpenSSH service startup failure on Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server version 23H2. KB5053603 and KB5053599.
  • KB5053596: A separate March 11, 2025 Windows 10 update article lists an OpenSSH fix. It is not KB5053606. KB5053596 release notes.

These references do not establish that KB5053606 fixed SSH on Windows 10. Check the specific KB article and Windows edition rather than assuming that a fix listed for another update applies to your device.

How to identify the update relevant to your PC

Before changing or troubleshooting updates, establish which Windows installation and failure you have:

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
  1. Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition and version. Check the OS build as well.
  2. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history and identify the KB numbers installed around the time SSH stopped working.
  3. Determine whether the problem is specifically that the OpenSSH server service (sshd) will not start. A failed SSH connection can have other causes, and the cited update notes do not provide a universal recovery procedure for every SSH failure.
  4. Compare your edition, build, and update history with the relevant Microsoft release notes before applying a fix. Do not treat KB5053606 as a current SSH remedy.
