Google reported a 48% reduction in the frequency of janky scrolls in Chrome on Android between 2023 and 2026, attributing it to engineering improvements—not settings users can turn on. You can still try Chrome’s documented maintenance steps, but treat them as troubleshooting rather than a guaranteed performance boost.
What Google’s 48% figure actually measures
In a July 23, 2026 Chromium post, Chrome software engineer Petr Čermák said: “Between 2023 and 2026, we reduced the frequency of janky scrolls in Chrome on Android by 48% through extensive pipeline instrumentation and targeted architectural optimizations.” The figure describes an engineering result across Chrome on Android over that period. It is not a measurement of a single person’s phone before and after changing settings, nor a claim that Chrome became 48% faster in every respect. Read the Chromium post.
A separate 2023 Chromium post reported a “2x reduction in visible jank while scrolling slowly,” following work that included tuning and enabling a 1€ filter. That was a distinct engineering result, described in a different way and timeframe; it should not be combined with the 2026 statistic or treated as a user-level guarantee. Chrome settings you can safely try
Google’s Android Chrome help recommends practical maintenance and troubleshooting steps, including closing inactive tabs and choosing a page-preloading setting. These may help address a particular browsing issue, but Google does not quantify them as producing a specific scrolling improvement. See Chrome’s Android performance guidance.

Close tabs you are not using
If you have many tabs open, close the ones you no longer need and see whether browsing improves. Google lists closing inactive tabs among its suggested steps. The guidance does not promise a particular amount of memory savings or smoother scrolling on every device.
Review page preloading
Chrome’s preloading choice affects how it prepares pages you might visit. Review the available option in Chrome’s settings and select the behavior that suits you. Because preloading concerns page preparation, do not assume changing it will fix scrolling stutter; use it to troubleshoot loading behavior. Google’s help page explains its suggested setting.

Reduce competing app activity
Google also recommends avoiding multiple apps at once when troubleshooting Chrome performance. If the browser feels sluggish, close apps you are not using, then check Chrome again. This is a general troubleshooting step, not a measured Chrome-specific smoothness tweak.
Why Chrome flags are not ordinary settings
Flags are experimental controls, separate from regular Chrome settings. Google says most users should not need to modify them and warns that changing flags can risk browser data, security, or privacy. Read Google’s Chrome flags guidance. The sources do not identify a specific trio of flags or settings as the cause of the 48% reduction, and they do not validate a three-setting recipe for personal results. Avoid changing flags based on an unsourced list or assuming an experimental option is a recommended performance fix.
If you choose to experiment with a flag
- Open
chrome://flagsin Chrome for Android. - Read the description of the flag before changing it, and change only one flag at a time.
- Relaunch Chrome when prompted so the change takes effect.
- If Chrome behaves unexpectedly, use the flags page’s reset option to restore flags to their defaults, then relaunch.
Reset Chrome settings only if troubleshooting calls for it
Google’s Android Chrome help also provides a way to reset Chrome settings to their defaults. Consider that step only after simpler troubleshooting, and review Google’s instructions so you understand what the reset changes: Reset Chrome settings.

How to judge whether a change helped
Change one ordinary setting or troubleshooting condition at a time, then revisit the same pages and repeat the same action—for example, slowly scrolling through a page that previously stuttered. If the result is inconsistent, or the issue persists, the cause may not be a setting. The published Google figures describe Chrome engineering outcomes, not a guaranteed fix for a particular phone, Chrome version, or workload.
