The current Claude Code memory documentation does not describe a # shortcut for adding text to CLAUDE.md. That does not establish whether the shortcut works in a particular version of the application: runtime behavior is unverified. The documented way to add persistent instructions is to edit a CLAUDE.md file.
What the current documentation says about the # shortcut
Anthropic’s Claude Code memory documentation explains instruction files and auto memory, but does not document a # quick-add command. The documentation therefore does not substantiate that the shortcut adds text to CLAUDE.md; its silence is not proof that the feature was removed or does not work in a specific release.
If you need to confirm behavior in your installation, check the current interface or version-specific official guidance. The documentation reviewed here does not establish a universal shortcut or its conditions.

Anthropic describes CLAUDE.md files as Markdown files that give Claude persistent instructions for a project, a personal workflow, or an organization. They provide context that Claude tries to follow; they are not enforced configuration. For a rule that must be applied regardless of the model’s choice, the documentation points to a PreToolUse hook instead.

Where Claude Code loads instruction files
The documentation describes several locations, each with a different scope:
~/.claude/CLAUDE.mdcontains user-level instructions../CLAUDE.mdor./.claude/CLAUDE.mdcontains project instructions../CLAUDE.local.mdcontains local project instructions.- Managed policy can provide organization-level instructions.
Parent-directory instruction files load when Claude Code launches. Instruction files in subdirectories load on demand as Claude works in those directories.

CLAUDE.md instructions and auto memory are different
Claude Code has two complementary memory systems, according to the official memory documentation. Both can carry information across sessions, but they are written and used differently:

Neither system is a technical enforcement layer: instructions guide Claude, while hooks are the documented option for rules that must be enforced.

How to add persistent instructions without relying on the shortcut
- Choose the instruction file that matches the intended scope: for example, the project’s
./CLAUDE.mdor your user-level~/.claude/CLAUDE.md. - Open that Markdown file in an editor and add the instruction as ordinary Markdown text.
- Save the file. The documented loading behavior is that parent-level files load at launch, while subdirectory files load on demand.
A CLAUDE.md file can also import another file with a line such as @path/to/import. Imports can use relative or absolute paths; relative paths resolve from the file containing the import. Imported text still contributes to Claude’s context, so importing a file does not reduce its context cost.
Bottom line on the # shortcut
The current official memory documentation reviewed here does not say that # adds text to CLAUDE.md. It also does not prove the shortcut is absent from every current Claude Code version. To add instructions using a documented method, edit the appropriate CLAUDE.md file directly.
