Not reliably enough to assume it will. Streamlabs’ documentation does not promise that a YouTube broadcast will continue if you switch apps or lock your phone. Its clearest warning concerns screen capture: the app says Streamlabs Mobile is effectively suspended in the background, and notes that iOS may kill the app during screen broadcasting. That is a reliability concern, not proof that every stream stops. Keep Streamlabs open for an important broadcast and test your exact phone and streaming mode first.
What happens when you leave Streamlabs Mobile?
Streamlabs Mobile supports broadcasting to YouTube from a phone using the camera, screen capture, or both, with setup and broadcast controls inside the app. Its YouTube setup guide does not say that a live broadcast is guaranteed to continue after you background the app or lock the phone. Streamlabs’ YouTube mobile setup guide was published April 16, 2021 and last updated August 12, 2026.
The Streamlabs Mobile Streaming FAQ is more specific about screen capture: “When screen capturing, the app is in the background and effectively suspended so it can’t render things inside of another app.” The FAQ also says iOS disables widgets during screen broadcasting to reduce the risk of the system killing the app. Those statements describe a real risk to app operation, but they do not establish that YouTube stops receiving every stream whenever the app is backgrounded.
Does it depend on camera, screen capture, or your phone?
Screen capture
This is the mode for which Streamlabs gives a direct background-suspension warning. If you leave the app to show another screen, or lock the phone, do not count on screen broadcasting to continue as intended. The documented iOS app-kill warning adds a specific concern for screen broadcasts on iPhones and iPads.

Camera streaming
The cited documentation does not give a camera-mode guarantee or a complete account of what happens after Streamlabs is backgrounded. Do not infer from the screen-capture warning that every camera stream necessarily stops—or infer that camera mode is safe to leave running.
iOS and Android
The FAQ specifically mentions iOS disabling widgets and the risk of the system killing the app during screen broadcasting. The reviewed guidance does not provide a full iOS-versus-Android behavior matrix, nor a guarantee for either platform. Results may depend on the phone, operating-system version, Streamlabs version, and whether you are streaming the camera or the screen.

How to check whether your setup keeps streaming
- Check the mode you plan to use. Decide whether the broadcast uses the camera, screen capture, or both; screen capture has the explicit background-suspension warning.
- Run a low-stakes test. Start a short test broadcast using the same phone, OS version, Streamlabs version, and mode you intend to use. If possible, use a private or otherwise low-stakes YouTube stream so you can check the result without risking an important broadcast.
- Try the action you are concerned about. During the test, switch to the app you need or lock the screen, then check whether the stream remains live and whether video and audio continue. Test app switching and screen locking separately; success in one case does not prove the other.
- Keep Streamlabs in the foreground when reliability matters. If the test is inconclusive, or the broadcast is important, leave the app open rather than relying on background operation.
Prepare the phone without mistaking preparation for a guarantee
Streamlabs recommends fully charging the phone, keeping a charger nearby, and closing open apps to reduce lag or crashes. These are sensible preparations, not fixes for an operating system suspending or killing the app, and they do not promise an uninterrupted stream. A compatible portable phone charger can extend access to power, but it cannot change the app’s background behavior.
