Yes. SpaceX software-team participants said in a 2020 public Q&A that Falcon flight-software applications use Linux. They described Linux as an application and hardware-interface environment—not as the whole flight-control or safety system. SpaceX’s 2025 launch guide also distinguishes onboard vehicle software from ground launch-control consoles, and does not identify Linux as the consoles’ operating system.
Where Linux fits in Falcon 9 flight software
In a 2020 public Q&A, SpaceX software-team participants said Falcon and Dragon use Linux for flight-software applications. They described custom application software as handling vehicle fault management and computing redundancy. That is a company-team description from 2020; it does not establish that every present-day subsystem, Linux distribution, or kernel version remains unchanged. SpaceX software-team Q&A (2020)
The distinction matters: Linux is part of the software environment, while vehicle-specific applications and systems perform control and fault-management work. The public explanation is high-level, not a complete architecture specification.
What the onboard computers do
A SpaceX software-team participant described many onboard computers assigned to particular tasks and synchronized with one another, with the flight computer overseeing actions. The participant characterized the control process as a loop: read sensor inputs, combine them with the system’s prior state to make a decision, then send outputs to hardware. This happens many times per second, according to that 2020 explanation.

- Note: This model is not a toy model, it is not recommended to buy for children, please buy with caution to avoid unnecessary trouble for your shopping
The team did not publish a complete current computer count, hardware layout, or processor specification in that discussion. The description supports the general architecture, not claims about a specific number of computers or a computer dedicated to each engine.
What happens in terminal countdown and before liftoff
SpaceX’s Falcon Payload User’s Guide, dated May 9, 2025, says that automated software sequencers control critical Falcon vehicle functions during terminal countdown. During the prelaunch hold-down, the guide says, the flight computer evaluates engine ignition and full-power performance before the vehicle is released. These are onboard vehicle functions, distinct from the consoles used by launch personnel. SpaceX Falcon Payload User’s Guide (2025)

Is the software changed for each mission?
SpaceX software-team participants said Falcon missions use the same software source, which is updated regularly; they also said new code is usually present on each mission. Mission-specific configuration supplied by other engineering groups can adjust items such as state machines, fault-tolerance thresholds, and launch-day wind values. In other words, the team described a shared codebase with ongoing updates and mission-specific settings—not a wholly separate software build written from scratch for every launch. SpaceX software-team Q&A (2020)
How the Autonomous Flight Safety System differs
The team described the Autonomous Flight Safety System (AFSS) as independent of the flight computer and running on microcontrollers. It receives direct sensor inputs, including inertial measurement data, along with some computed inputs from the flight computer. A mission data load specifies conditions that might require flight termination. This account describes a separate safety system; it does not mean Linux alone performs flight termination or that the public discussion documents the full AFSS design. SpaceX software-team Q&A (2020)

Onboard computers and ground launch-control consoles are different
“Computers used during launch” can refer either to equipment aboard the rocket or to the systems used by launch personnel on the ground. The public descriptions treat them separately:
| System | Location | Described role | What the source says about Linux |
|---|---|---|---|
| Falcon flight software and computers | Onboard the vehicle | Flight applications, vehicle control and related computing functions, as described by SpaceX software-team participants | Participants said Falcon flight-software applications use Linux; they did not specify a current distribution or kernel version. 2020 Q&A |
| Launch-control consoles | On the ground | Modular, expandable consoles for launch-control functions, voice communications, video-over-IP, and industrial-control software | The 2025 guide does not identify their operating system or say they use Linux. 2025 guide |
The guide describes the consoles as using standard modern computer and display systems with industrial-control software. That description should not be extended into an unsupported claim about their operating system. SpaceX Falcon Payload User’s Guide (2025)

What is—and is not—publicly established
The available company-team Q&A and official guide support a qualified answer: SpaceX participants said Falcon flight-software applications use Linux, and the guide describes automated countdown sequencers and flight-computer checks. They do not establish the exact current Linux distribution, kernel version, processor models, total computer count, or a complete current Falcon 9 computer layout. Claims about those specifics should not be treated as confirmed by these sources.
