Yes. Safely ejecting or unmounting a USB drive gives your computer a chance to finish pending writes and stop using the device before you unplug it. The risk is clearest when files are still being written or Windows is caching writes, but the practical rule is simple: finish your work, eject or unmount the drive, wait for confirmation, then disconnect it.

Why safely removing a USB drive matters

A file-copy window closing does not necessarily prove that every write to the drive has finished. The operating system may still have pending work, or an application may still be using a file on the device. Ejecting or unmounting tells the system to complete outstanding operations and release the drive.

Unplugging during a write can leave data incomplete or damage the drive’s filesystem. Microsoft recommends safely removing external storage to avoid data loss, and Ubuntu warns that disconnecting without unmounting can cause data loss or filesystem corruption. Neither source establishes a numerical probability of failure, so the risk should not be expressed as a percentage.

Windows: Quick removal versus Better performance

Windows 10 and Windows 11 offer two removal policies for external storage. Their behavior affects write caching, but it does not make unplugging during active file operations a good idea.

Policy Write caching Performance trade-off Safe removal
Quick removal Windows does not cache disk write operations for the device. May reduce performance. Microsoft’s guidance still recommends safe removal generally; this policy does not guarantee protection from data loss.
Better performance Windows may cache writes. May improve performance. Use Safely Remove Hardware so cached operations finish before disconnecting.

Microsoft says Quick removal has been the default since Windows 10 version 1809. Earlier Windows versions defaulted to Better performance. The policy can be set for an individual external device and persists when that device is reconnected to the same computer port. See Microsoft’s Manage default media removal policy documentation.

Eject a USB drive in Windows

  1. Finish copying, saving, or otherwise working with files on the drive.
  2. Select the taskbar’s Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon, then choose Eject for the device.
  3. Wait for the Safe To Remove Hardware notification and for the device to disappear from the menu before unplugging it.

If the taskbar icon is unavailable, Microsoft also documents removing a device through Settings. The icon may not appear when Windows does not recognize a removable device as connected. Microsoft’s step-by-step instructions are in Safely remove hardware in Windows.

Ejecting a USB drive on Mac

In Finder, select the drive and choose File > Eject, click the Eject button beside it, or drag the drive to Trash. Wait for it to disappear from Finder before unplugging. If it will not eject, Apple says another app or user may still be using files on the device; close the relevant app or file and try again. Apple’s instructions cover connecting and using storage devices with Mac.

Unmounting or ejecting a USB drive on Linux

Unmount the drive through your desktop’s file manager or storage controls before disconnecting it. Ubuntu’s USB guidance explains that unmounting waits for data to finish writing or for programs to stop using the device, and warns that skipping this step can cause data loss or filesystem corruption. The Linux eject command’s manual says a mounted device is unmounted before ejecting by default, unless special options are used.
